Confession of a die-hard Land Cruiser guy......I bought a Trekker and I love it.

Truck hit the yard yesterday.....@cruiserjunktion shot me a message that an AC truck was there. I sent my guy up there(2 hours north) this AM at 8. We got it all.....I think.....I hope.

Best part...$210 for all of it!

That's a great price for that. It shouldn't be too hard of an install. I'm currently in the same boat with my 87, I was lucky enough to score everything I need for $200 from a local guy on Craigslist.

When are you planning on installing it? This Trekker is about to get so much cooler! (literally :hillbilly:)

No real rush to get it in....I like to collect everything, then think about installing....only to realize I don't have everything. Ha.

It's a simple system....install will be easy. I think these were all dealer added too.....I was talking to a TRD engineer who worked at a dealer when these trucks were new and I think he said they had to put AC in them.

This truck's back end is my favorite part I think...it's got that cool Cal custom look to it with the rolled pan. Neat little truck. Need to start thinking about the rear bumper I suppose....hate to change the lines but I think a bumper will look good on it....

Everytime I see pics of this truck I get a woody. Nice, very nice.

Some of the A/Cs were OEM and quite a few were aftermarket kits. The OEM would have had a Nippondenso compressor.

Interesting. Wouldn't a dealer install an ND unit if they were putting one in?

AFAIK all A/C units were dealer installed. None came with them installed from the factory.

My dad bought an '82 brand new and I'm positive it came with A/C from Japan as the Toyota parts diagram shows them. I remember seeing the aftermarket units in some back then and noticing the differences. I'm guessing the aftermarket units were a lot cheaper and came as a kit unlike the Toyota ones. Dealers only looked at the profit margin and regional sales such as Gulf States Toyota commonly added options to lower grade models for higher profit margin. Since a/c wasn't as common on Toyota trucks in that era it was more common for kits and aftermarket suppliers to also add them after the sale expecially in hot climates.

I think that 83' could be either factory, port, or dealer installed depending on location and to some degree dealership/distributor preference.

I would connect with @cDan for a better understanding of the possible different ways they could be ordered and potentially different kits depending on install location.

All being said, Trekkers could be different all together depending on what Toyota/Winnebago opted for at that time, I would imagine as long as everything came from the same donor truck and you have that VIN you can piece together an effective and functional AC.

Good luck with the project, great truck!!!!

Also here is a shot of my recently completed 83' LB upholstery top compared to a shot lifted from the 83' brochure bottom image.

It wasn't an exact match, but availability and price was right and unless they are side by side it is more difficult to tell

Trekkers had all the same options as the trucks....SR5 or Deluxe packages too. I think Winnebago used different rear windows on the topper based on if the truck was Deluxe or SR5....sliding on SR5, fixed on Deluxe.

Fabric looks good. I'm going to try and grab a set of seats out of a 83 camper conversion pickup next week....then we'll recover them. Rear seat too. Going to do some different inserts in mine though....may go kind of 80s. Not sure if I will go thru though. Definitely won't look stock but will look period correct-ish. I'm mulling between 2 patterns. One of them is much more OEM looking than the other.

First things first....need the seats.

Well bad news on the radio....the stereo guys couldn't fix it. Would have required some very expensive parts and months of waiting....with no guarantee they could even get the parts. So we pulled the plug on it. Will go with the hide-away audio setup that I have. Not ideal(I wanted volume control thru the radio).

But....I found a guy who took his same radio and did new guts in it. Some kind of computer setup. I reached out to him and he said he'd be able to take on the project in May...just because he gets Toyotas, the truck and wanting the radio to stay with it. Toyota people get it.

My unit back in the dash.....at least I have some knobs now.

Get in touch with this guy on eBay. He's been retrofitting radios for some time and is highly recommended. I was going to have him redo the original one in my 85 Ford.

What if the factory head unit was just for show - just powered on but had no function.

My plan for the '84 (I mean, if it's ever parolled from bodyshop prison) is to have an amp and two speakers behind the seat (Xtra Cab) and two in the doors. Nothing big - just four speakers and a small amp (I'll likely build a dual-purpose box for storage and amp/speakers). The factory head unit won't be connected. Instead, I'll have a Bluetooth dongle connected to the amp - and all music, podcasts, etc. will stream from my phone.

As a bonus, if a bad guy were to look in the truck, he's not going to drool over the 1984 AM/FM cassette deck. Double bonus: he'll assume the rest of they "system" is junk too.

Really good find on that guy....I emailed him. Well see what he says.

Pretty much what I planned...head unit in the dash as a dummy...then use the Out of Sight Audio Mark 3 thing to do it's thing. It will be plenty for me. I find that in some of my trucks, I don't even want tunes. But this little truck is so quiet and enjoyable to drive, some music might be pretty cool....

Does your driver's visor have an informational card in it? If so, could you post a pic? Thanks!
