We went rafting and parked the cruiser at the portal out. When we were done we threw the boat on the roof and my companions carelessly strapped it down...
I didn't really pay attention to the integrity of that unfortunately and we hit the super curvy 45mph road(to go 5 miles upstream to the car we departed from). A bit up the twisty riverside road, in congested weekend river tourist traffic, the raft started sliding off the roof... In a panic I sorta grabbed it through the drivers window but long story short it got us off pavement and I let the passenger take the wheel for a costly second...
We got quite a bit of air off (hence the caved in roof)an embankment and actually cleared an on coming car. This sort of occurred in a large turn and I'm pictured in the oncoming lane(upsidedown).
I realize these things get sh!!t gas mileage, but honestly, if you can grab one for $4-5000 (or easily less) and make it you kids first car there's a legitimate arguement for safety and well being if so unfortunate. We woulda died in a lesser vehicle...
People wouldn't Understand . Its a Cruiser thing . You alright Dude I know you will get another Cruiser and I can bet that bumper will never be for sale and its going to mount in your next Cruiser .
1. Glad to hear everyone is OK, bad things happen sometimes when the A-posts crush back like that. Y'all were lucky. And the Cruiser is built hella stout, but still...wow. Lucky, especially with an arm out the window.
2. This should put to rest once and for all the 'is the chinese snorkel as strong as an ARB?' argument. Definitive proof-right there. (Of course, someone will probably claim that an ARB snorkel would have kept the roof from crushing in...) Thank you for answering that question, though that was definitely doing it the hard way!
3. It's just stuff, and stuff can be rebuilt/reworked/replaced. Take some time and then take stock and see what's salvageable for your next rig, or just go crazy and lop the top and doors off, put a 40 windshield on it, and make you a trail rig. Either way, it saved you and yours by taking one for the team. That right there is worthy of some honor, it's what they give out medals for. Maybe we can get bhicks or someone to make a purple heart medallion for rebuilt rigs...
Always truly amazed when I see pics of mangled wrecks like yours and the passengers are largely unscathed. Good to hear everyone is ok. I just might now get another one for my daughters to drive. Take care, best wishes, and good luck hopefully in the hunt for another.
Wow!! Glad to hear your alright. Thought from the title it was going to be a joke post about the Chinese snorkels and then when I scrolled down and saw the pics I was shocked. Reinforces why my little princess only rides in the cruiser. Have to keep the most important things in life safe.
Like everyone has said, terrible news for the cruiser, good news for the safety of all the occupants. If you have room for it and the frame and running gear aren't shot like the others have said make it a trail truck, or do a windshield frame and "family cage" with a bikini top like the early blazers.
Glad to hear you and all your occupants OK Booger!
Seeing the A-pillars back like that is usually a really bad thing. Did you flip it over, get it running and drive it home?
That's the reason for drawers and securing all your crap in the back of the truck. If you see his tools and other stuff scattered all over, those thing become projectiles and cause injuries as well! I have no idea if you had drawers or not, but that make me want to install some as well as a cage behind the second row. And maybe a roll bar at the B pillar.
I had a friend that was able to walk away from a very bad flip and taking a tree across the roof from the hood ornament to the tailgate. It pushed the bucket seats out the doors and that's the only thing that saved their lives because the roof was flat to the bottom of the windows. I am a believer in ROPS. I built my first 4x4 with a brush guard and double tube pipe roll bar attached to the frame on mine to prevent such a problem. Fortunately, I never had to use it.
Hope all is well and you all recover from the stiffness and soreness of being thrashed around inside there.
Geez man that's terrible, so sorry. Glad no one was hurt. Amazing how every time I see a rolled 80 the roof is totally collapsed yet people still walk away with minor injuries.
These yoters hold up pretty well in a rollover. My '97 4Runner rolled at 45mph and looked pretty similar and all 3 occupants escaped with no injury. No snorkel to add passenger A-pillar bracing
