I think you finally got the "stinkbug" out of it!

Glad everyone was ok. Was it the force of the roll that put your body in the position to not get crushed by the roof? I have always wondered that.
I had cages in my previous Jeeps. Rolled one of them and the cage seemed to hold it together. Although I didn't take the force on the A pillar. From what I recall and what the witness told me was I rolled over once and then on the second roll I hit the embankment and it put me back on all fours, actually back on only 3 tires. That was the first wreck I was ever in. It was slow motion. I saw the radio come out of the dash and float around. Mine was a spacer failure which I take the blame for by not checking after leaving Moab.

Your companions are absolute fawking idiots. No other way around that. Ugh.

Fool me once shame on...well...I guess you only get the once. Sucks.

You need better companions/friends/passengers. :meh:

Freaking crazy!

So let me be the outlier here only because I would constantly say the same thing to everyone that would listen.

The accident likely would not have occurred in the truck didn't have such a high center of gravity. Physics are against us. Add to that we are driving arguably the best trucks in the world and we tend to think we are invincible in the truck until rudely proving otherwise. Add to that now after seeing the A-Pillar crushed like that and I am seriously shocked you and your bonehead passenger weren't seriously injured or worse. Is the fact you were left unscathed to do with the design or was it because physics were on your side again and you happened to not have your heads firmly planted near the windshields at the time.

Don't get me wrong. I love my truck and I feel safe as fawk but I also need to be a realist and be pragmatic about my driving and what I do. You don't get to hear from the people who lost their lives in their Land Cruiser about how much they love the safety and security of it. Food for thought.

In a similar vein to this, and I'm sure Booger learned a valuable lesson. Always inspect your cargo, and tie downs before embarking, and recheck a few miles down the road before getting onto a highway. My :princess: likes to just throw s*** willy nilly into her Subaru, or any vehicle for that matter, and I always make a point to repack those things tightly, and as far from the passengers as possible (you know, in the trunk). Not saying it would have prevented the accident, but I'm sure Booger would have seen the raft was not secured and done it himself.

Few extra minutes to secure a raft and we wouldn't have this snorkel review

I am so glad you and your passengers are ok, you can always replace cars but health of you and your passengers is irreplaceable
i too have rolled a car as well , when i see these pillars fail scares me, i rolled my evo from a hill and the only thing kept me alive was my A,B and C pillars in driver side stood still while the rest of the car ..... well you can see
i hope 100 is little stronger in this area
but never the less its sad seeing a loved car is gone

After cutting up a buddies HDJ81, I took note of how many metal layers composed the B and C pillars, and was kinda of impressed. I don't recall thinking the same of the A pillars. Have no pics of the A pillars though.

Cool everyone is OK

My interior cage fit was excellent and did not get in my way or feel claustrophobic to me or passengers. It was built designed to prevent the roof from caving and not to survive an end over end 100mph roll during the Baja 500.

I rolled my '98 Tacoma avoiding a 6 year old on a mini bike. Rolled down the side of a hill 4 times (maybe 5 times, it's still debated). The interior roll cage and 5 point safety harnesses are what saved me.

If I was going to wheel my 80 like I did my Taco it would have to be caged.

For now I'll keep my 80 stock height and go wherever it can go and be happy. :flipoff:

What about an exocage? I think that would be cool as s*** man!

I debate doing something like that. Being fresh out of the roll over in my second Jeep I replaced the whole existing cage instead adding to the stock. I wonder if the way mine hugged the dash is doable in an 80. Would free up some room from what you had.

To the OP....glad you are OK! That photo of the wreckage looks scary. My 6'3'' frame probably would not have walked away from that.

Having a tire blow, catastrophic wheel failure, etc are one of my biggest worries in my 80 as a rollover would almost be guaranteed. A roll cage like the one Landcruiser Phil has is probably one of best "safety" mods out there. Did you make that yourself?

Something that is key in cage construction is that it MUST attach structurally back to the frame in order to be structurally sound. If it is just attached to body parts, then it is only as strong as the weakest body part it is attached to.

It MUST go to (or through) the floor and attach to a structural member below that is attached to the frame. If you have the cage bolt thru the floor, then you must use different sized pads above and below, because otherwise it acts like a punch press and will rip that section right out of the body. Best to use round plates of different diameters above and below.

@LandCruiserPhil , is your cage bolt-together or permanently welded in? I would like to build my own, but I want to make sure that if I do it, it can come apart so I can remove headliner, or sunroof, etc. if necessary.

You have all kinds of room to attach cup holders to that roll cage! Seriously, you could have like 100 cupholders at least!

Not to mention you could put a tab on the front bar in order to hold saggy sun visors!

BOOGER NOOOO!!!!
I'm glad you're okay man, tell the little man that whatever it was that hit him just builds character. I'm glad he's okay man. As for the cruiser, you get a mulligan man, take what you've learned and apply it to the next build. Just got my tire carrier and spare on the back and realized how soft my springs are and how tippy it feels at its current height, so I'm going to lower it a few inches and arctic truck it (trim the :censor: out of the front to match the rear job). A lot of time and work, but after seeing the number of rollovers in 80's increasing the last few months....worth the money. Hope you carried full coverage with accessory insurance, hopefully you can start fresh man. Once again, happy you and the kid are alright.

Glad to hear you guys are ok for sure! Those pictures thru this thread are crazy on all the crushed roofs. I got my Land Cruiser because of rolling my Scout II several times down a mountain side... Heck of a way to take my first helicopter ride! I was wondering how many people put cages inside these rigs because I'm sure that is what saved me in my soft top Scout.

The flying debris can be the worst and every tie down I had in place was broken due to the rollover I was in, even the larger ratchet straps broke. All rollovers have the potential to be very violent and forces inside are amazing. Worst part of mine was a wife 10' away watching the dogs and I go off the mountian side you don't forget those screams... I was gone (CHP picked me up) but the truck got put back on its wheels and drove off the trail. I'm sure you could make a trail rig out of her just like I'm doing with my damaged rig.
