Questions regarding the Charcoal Canister.

1. Do I need it with a de-smogged 2F engine?

Found this thread with pictures:
charcoal canister

2. I figured out where the line with the "green" plug goes (in post #12) but where do I route the two other black hoses on the top of the canister?

CC

It appears that I need to source a "Vapor Seperator" or tap a new line into the gas tank. Is any of this worth the effort?

No you don't need it. You can plug all of the lines from the tank and get an early, vented gas cap. I am not sure what year caps fit what year necks though.

You don't need it if you like the smell of gas. I would recommend keeping it, reducing the complexity of the vacuum connections and venting it into the air cleaner at least. If you want to get fancy, pass the vent tube through the bvsv so it only vents when it warms up.

This is why I'd like to keep it. Fast Eddy, can you describe how to do this a little more?

Vapor separators are not that hard to find -- post a request in the "parts wanted" section and I'll bet someone has one.

When I replaced my gas tank last year I realized my old vapor separator had a crack, and I found one for about $10 here on MUD.

I don't have quite the time to spend on mud at work as I have had in the past. Read a bunch and ask questions and I (and others) will try to help. What air cleaner do you have? Stock? Mine both have vacuum line-sized ports that are not being used. Any of them should be a good start.

You will need a vapor separator. Post up on the "parts wanted" forum. They should be pretty cheap. Get that all plumbed right to the tank and the canister, then plumb it to the bvsv (if you still have it, and it works, or to a simple check valve, then to the air cleaner or a vacuum port. If you use a vacuum port, I'm not sure which one or if it would matter. Trollhole or JimC would know.

Read away (and click the 'images') link.

I say keep the seperator and canister. I never quite understood the aversion to the charcoal canister. You might as well get SOME use out of vapor that would just be lost otherwise.

That'll work, thank you

Me too. There is no practical advantage to doing without it and some good in keeping it. Look for the official de-smog schematic in the de-smog threads in the 60 section and that will show you how to plumb it in.

Where does the bottom hose under the cannister go to? Thanks.

Still not up to speed on this site, but hacking around, getting good info, thanks.
79 FJ40, all smog equipment plugged or removed, but would like to use original CC to vent gas tank. The CC is not plumbed it’s pretty and painted waiting for some action! haven’t noticed Any vapors But noticed my clear fuel filter in front Of carb was completely full and engine started idling and running rough at low rpm, the fuel filter normally works 25% full, can I assume there is some fuel tank pressure effecting the return line to tank?
All of the fuel tank lines and plastic separator are attached to fuel tank, but are capped off.
I would like to hook up the fuel tank vent system to CC, and run one line from CC to manifold or air cleaner, is this feasible?
As you know the OEM has 3 ports on top and one on bottom that is an air intake. The port labeled tank has an internal check valve allowing air out, not in, if this is to vent fuel tank shouldn’t it be the opposite???? The other smaller port is labeled “purge”, so assume this should be plumbed to manifold? The third, larger port is not labeled, not sure if needed.
I just want to use OEM CC as a fuel tank vent only, any ideas or help would be great.
Thanks, Hondo

@Gary S, I recommend you do what @1911 says. If you already have a desmogged 79, the JimC Desmog diagram in the 60 section is very close to correct. Search for My Desmog Thread. If you’re missing a VCV or BVSV then you will either need to find new/used ones or figure out an abbreviated CC purge system which doesn’t use them. Study the diagram first so you fully understand how it is supposed to work.

@Gary S , here is the official de-smog schematic (blessed by Jim C.). It shows how the charcoal cannister should be plumbed. I can also look at and take photos of my (12/79 build) 40 if that would help.
