Well, a bit of an update. Had the motor pressure tested and it started pumping coolant out of the back of the motor. So it's looking like HG or coolant hoses at the back of the motor or a combination of the two. But there was also residue on the plugs that points HG failure so looking like I'm moving forward with a HG swap.

Well that sucks. That's how mine went. External HG leak at #6 even though the truck ran fine and never got hot.

I sure this is why OEM temp gauges have a bit of numbness built in to them. If we saw how temps fluctuated during normal driving we'd always think it was overheating. It's also why aftermarket digital gauges will turn you into a OCD crackwhore. IMO, seeing 215º on a steep climb is completely normal. On really long, steep grades I've gotten past 220 on a hot summer day but it quickly cools down afterwards. I wouldn't worry about it unless you see 215 in normal driving or stopped at a light.

This could be very likely. Its the ONLY reason I removed the RAVENTAI coolant gauge mod. It was making me super paranoid. Now I'm just paranoid.

Well unfortunately all signs point to yes. Sorry about that.

wow, sorry to hear, just think about how nice it will be when it is all done though, my engine purrs after the hg and top end rebuild......
 
For sure. It stings to take the hit to the pocketbook, but the piece of mind with having it done will be nice.
 


 
Motor is back together and the Cruiser should be back on the road this afternoon. Initial startup was smooth and it sounds nice. The head was is pretty good shape and only needed a small amount of machine work to get it squared up. Valve seals were replaced, along with the valve cover gasket (which was leaking) and the Distributor o-ring that was also leaking.
 
update. All in all the cruiser is running well however it's still running warmer than it should on long highway climbs. I've got to do a bit more digging because nearly everything in the cooling system is new and now I know it cant be the HG this time. It would climb to about 215* on long climbs and might have gone higher had I not turned on the heater. That was with 55* ambient temps so summertime isn't going work if I have to run the heater to keep temps in check. Grrr.

On a positive note, had a great weekend set up at the Tepui Tents display at Gearheads. Talked to a ton of people about the tents and Gear bags. The guys at Gearheads are fantastic!


Also picked up my new ComeUp Seal 9.5s Gen2 and chatted for quite a while with Ben Huang who is the President of ComeUp. What a great guy! He is 100% committed to providing the very best winch on the market. I was already feeling good about my decision to go with ComeUp and feel even better after talking with Ben for a while. I'll post some pics of the winch soon. Hoping to get it mounted up this week after a few bumper mods. If anyone is looking at winches, do yourself a favor and check out the ComeUp winches. I anticipate mine being every bit as good as any of the Warn winches I've ever had, if not better.
 
I'm just going to throw this out there. While 215* seems hot for this motor my previous Jeep and all other Jeeps w the 4.0l motor run all day long at 220*. In the summertime I was always paranoid about this and did a lot of research. The conclusion was its fine and the motor is going to last 300k or more regardless. So, it may not be that big of a deal, especially if its only happening on long hill climbs. Just a thought
 
Finished up my winch install with the COMEUP Seal 9.5s
Really impressed with the quality of the winch so far. Looking forward to trying it out. Line speed is pretty good. Not the fastest but definitely not slow. The synthetic rope looks like excellent quality, as does the included fairlead.

As part of my order I also got a winch dampner and a pair of gloves. Not a big deal but will be nice to have.

Since my ARB bumper has been modified (was originally a winch bumper, but the PO cut all the winch brackets off as well as the lower skirt) I needed to add in some way to mount the winch. I like the higher clearance lower part of the bumper and it was pretty simple to solve the mounting. I used a universal winch cradle that I was able to weld across the frame mounting brackets of the bumper.










 
I'm just guessing but do you think this bearing should be replaced? ;)
