headliner

I started digging into my headliner today, more out of interest to get in and start banging the dents out of the roof from the tree damage. The headliner was so dryrotted it basically fell apart in my hands as I cut it all out. Above it is a layer of what looks to be recycled cotton and wool, made into sound deadening panels. It's held up with a nasty black glue. Some of it came apart pretty easily, but most of it will require scraping of some sort to get it all out. Once I have all of it repainted I was planning on using dynamat (or similar product) throughout the roof, doors, floors, etc. But this original stuff has to come out. Anyone had any luck getting this stuff out with any sort of adhesive remover, or do I just have a lot of scraping in my future?

lots of scrapping, yes

wear a mask, that adhesive probably has the evil "A" in it

"A" as in alcohol? :-)

Yeah, before I dig any further it's probably high time to purchase a respirator.

It could be that I don't completely understand but from the way I am reading you have parts on the reverse lights that have deteriorated and you are planning on replacing them when you start to put things together. Did I get that right??? If I did, then you might want to check on the parts you are looking to replace before getting the chrome work done. Toyota does not sell any of the individual parts. They only sell the complete unit. I needed gaskets and was going to "make do" with everything else. That's when I found out they only sell the complete unit. I will now leave this subject alone so that I do not look like a complete idiot.:D

Regarding the glue for the headliner, man that stuff is tough. Not sure you could take that stuff off with a flamethrower. I started out trying to scrape the stuff but start getting worried the roof might end up the worse for the wear. Got out the orbital sander with the roughest grit I could get my hands on and knocked the bulk of it down. Came back with my soda blaster to clean up what was left and the spots the sander couldn't reach. Took about two days to get it right.

Yeah I originally set out to get all of the chrome trim around the marker lights rechromed and then decided to focus on just the headlight frames, my mirrors, door handles, emblems and some other odds and ends. I will be replacing the marker lights and reverse lights with new.

I'm making a run to the hardware store to pick up a new respirator this week. I found my old one from my last resto project but it was pretty trashed. Don't want to take any chances with asbestos or any other nasties I may find in there. Plus, I'll need one for sandblasting soon anyway, so might as well pull the trigger now.

Anyone know a good source for seatbelts for the Pig? For some odd reason mine came with all the mounts, but none of the belts.

I'll edit my post and add a question vs. creating an additional post. I was casually looking at my windshield wipers over the weekend with the intent of figuring out how to remove both wiper blade assemblies. Anyone know how to do this? On my old Toyota pickup the bottom ends just flipped up, revealing the bolt and nut underneath. The bottom 'cap' doesn't seem to flip up on the 55. Must be another (more complicated) way?

I used one of these. Someone else posted about these for removing all of the glue and crap from the roof area. Put one of the blade attachments on scrape away. Oscillating Multifunction Power Tool

Cool - I have a very similar tool already. Thinking about using it in combination with a drill with a wire brush attachment. Should do the trick!

Your 71 wiper blades should be the same as my 72 and they are completely "seat of the pants". There is a thread labeled "leak under dash" about half way down on the front page that has some good pictures showing what is under your wiper blade arm. The arm basically pushes down over the spline bushing and has a little little catch that does little or nothing. Mine were off when I got it but from what I can tell, they simply pry straight up and off. There really isn't a whole lot holding the whole windshield wiper mess together.

I haven't clicked on the other thread yet, but from your description are you saying that the wiper assembly has to be removed from under the dash - or can the wiper arms be removed from outside the wagon? Heck you're in middle Georgia, just drive by and give me a personal demonstration. :-)

ADD?

Hey folks.

I've put work aside on the Pig for the last few weeks while I address an annoying latch issue on the spare tire carrier on my Tacoma. If you're truly interested, read it here:
DeStaCo Latch Issue

I hope to have this resolved shortly after the Labor Day holiday. In the meantime, I ordered (and received) my new "rectangular" round eyes for my Tacoma as well. Stoked to get these installed.

Stay tuned...more progress on the Pig coming.

Steven, just been reading your posts on the head liner. On a other thread they used dry ice on the roof and the glue popped right off. I've never tried it myself, but seems it would work. Good luck

Interesting! Only two panels of it left after several weekends of mind numbing scraping and sanding - I'll give anything else a swing at this point. Do I put the dry ice up top on the outside and work inside - or apply it directly from the inside? Got a link to the thread? Thanks for the tip!

The dry ice goes on the top. Not sure which build I was reading, It was one of the better builds. Give it a try, can't hurt much. Maybe lay a towel down before the ice?

I have a question I've been meaning to post for weeks now.

1. Is the throw-up light under the rear license plate of early models easy to remove? Any threads or instructions for such? No easily identifiable nuts or bolts from what I can see. But mine has disintegrated, so they may have rusted off at some point.
2. Is a replacement part available for this item or do I have to remain patient for a parts Pig? As stated, mine is toast.

Thanks fellers.

I've got some good news for you. This is a part that you can still buy new from Toyota. I bought one about a year ago from C-dan. It's about $30. There was a thread somewhere (55 section?) that was titled " parts that you can still get from Toyota" that listed the part number for the light. If you can't find the thread let me know and I may be able to find it again.

I am waiting until I paint my pig to change out the light, so I am not sure of what nuts and bolts hold it on. I can look at the backside of the light when I get home and see what it looks like.

I tried looking for the old thread with the part number for the light and I couldn't find it. When I get home I will look at the light and see if I can find a part number, knowing me I tossed the bag that the light came in.

I still have the bag, part #81270-29035 "lamp". There are two bolts that come out of the back of the light about 2" from each end.
