The buttons are to release the headrests

Very interesting! Are the headrests the same as earlier FJ40 models - or is this going to be another quest for the needle in the haystack?

:hhmm:

EDIT: PabloCruise I saw the 2007(ish) thread regarding headrests right after reading your post. Looks like I may have some difficulty finding these but I'll keep an eye out. You never know where a pair might turn up. The good news is that when it comes time to re-do the vinyl on the front seats, I'll try to get the upholstery shop to highlight the buttons and to leave some openings for the headrests. Thanks for chiming in on this.

mystery knob

Anyone know what this knob does? I was testing whether my knobs are functional before I start removing everything, and this one won't budge. What does it do?

BTW - image is "borrowed". I don't have a good detailed image of my dash to reference the knobs yet.

Thanks!

That is the choke

Well then, I guess it'll be important to get this one working again. I hadn't dug around too deeply in the dash to trace it back, but I'd like to think if I did I would have found it led back to the carb. Not sure why it's so stiff but I'll put it on the list to look at.

Thanks Jack.

front and rear rubber mats

Just scored some OEM rubber floormats, front and rear, for the Pig online. Stoked!

headrests

Just scored some OEM headrests. OK, I guess I should get some work done today at the real job and stop spending money.

Good looking pig man :pig: Rear seat isn't original, looks like this and the side panels were all done to match at some point in the pigs life. I'd just recover the front to match since the rest looks to be in good shape. The rear window is operated by a toggle switch on the dash, you can see it in this pic (thanks SOR):

The ignition switch should work in the tailgate to lower the window, if yours doesn't keep in mind there were only like 8 different keys at this point ... so try one of you or your buddies 40 keys (also useful info for cruiser events, more than one Cruiser has been "moved" this way) ;)

Keep up the good work!

Tucker-

Great info - thanks. I'm actually not very surprised that the vinyl has been recovered. A local shop has a ton of interior panels posted on eBay right now which do appear to be original. In my quest to go for original equipment I may decide to purchase these items and then turn mine around.

Love the dash pic. :-) I see a lot of blanks in the dash, which is consistent with mine. Were these options or just items that got moved around as the FJ55 evolved and the blanks were just an easier way to keep the dash style the same?

Also, what's the deal with SOR. Do you have to be a member to purchase anything?

I think all the holes were for various options in other markets like PTOs/hand throttle/etc, but I don't know for sure. Anyone can buy from SOR, they are just pretty pricey ... it's cheaper if you join their club but only if you're planning on spending some $$ anyway. I know Shane (AATLAS1X) makes some OEM reproduction covers for the front and rear, so if you do go that route you can get them (he makes nice stuff, have his covers in my 40).

Today's progress:

The Optima battery arrived early! It was packaged ok and seemed to fair well. Realized like a moron I had ordered the D34/78 instead of the D34. Did some quick research online and I think it will work fine. Same specs as D34, just different post locations.
Anyway, hooked the battery up, tested the ignition switch for power - heard a click - so I flipped the switch down for the rear window. Heard a buzz, but no movement. Flipped the switch up, and the window goes down. Figures. Huge grin ensues, and I immediately show off to the wife, as if power windows had just been invented. But it was a proud moment, because having access to the rear cargo area will be a huge step in getting work accomplished.
Once I was satisfied with the rear hatch, I set about removing everything external on the wagon: emblems, marker lights, radio antenna - anything a screwdriver could penetrate. As expected, all light weatherstripping was completely dry rotted, and just crumbled in my hands as I removed it. I hope I can find replacements for everything.
Next, I've been noticing rust bubbles in the door bottoms, so I took al the interior door skins off. 3 out of 4 of the door skins survived. One got wet some time ago and just crumbled. So, it looks like I'll be replacing door panels. Inspected the insides of the doors to find another 40 years worth of gunk and interestingly, pine needles. Got the shop vac and a flat screwdriver out, and chipped all the gunk out and vacuumed it. What a mess. No wonder the doors were rusting from the inside. Some of it was still wet. So, no pictures to show today but trust that progress is being made.
Taking a recreation day tomorrow to go hiking and kayaking at Stone Mountain. Good excuse to gear up the Tacoma!

Amazingly, here in Atlanta. That and the rubber floor mats completely made my week. Now, if only I could find those elusive Toyota emblems to go with my Land Cruiser ones....

When a tree falls....

Well, the unthinkable happened last night. Katy and I were awakened at 3:30 by the sound of a horrible crash in the back yard. She sprung out of bed in a flash to go check it out. I, on the other hand, almost didn't want to see. Somehow I already knew what happened.

We have an old pecan tree in the back corner of the property, and I've always considered getting the limbs cut down - if not have the whole tree removed. Every time there's a bad storm the branches threaten to break and it's always just made me extremely nervous. The wind was blowing really hard last night, and a pretty severe thunderstorm rolled through our neighborhood. We've been having a lot of trees fall in Atlanta this year, likely the result of the drought we had several years ago followed by a pretty wet spring and summer. I guess this pecan tree just couldn't handle the wind anymore, and the biggest, ugliest and most threatening limb finally gave way.

The pictures illustrate the end result. Notice how the tree completely missed everything else in the back yard, including my Tacoma - but very squarely nailed the Pig right in the roof. I think it can be fixed - in fact I'm confident that it can. But what a terrible, annoying pain in the ass.

Thank God it didn't come through the house. Thank God it wasn't worse and the whole tree didn't fall on us. This could have been a lot worse, so we just need to be thankful that we're all OK. But damn. It's been a rough week already - I didn't need this.

Insurance

I haven't spoken with my agent yet. I have a message in with them this morning. However, as others have probably dealt with similar issues with their own vehicles, getting vintage vehicles repaired through your insurance company is likely a sticky business. If anyone has dealt with this before or has any advice, I'm all ears. I do not want this vehicle to be totaled.

That is great news that no one was hurt and your house is intact.
Insuring old collectibles is tricky. One day I saw an SUV parked on the side of the road with windshield and roof smushed.'I called and got stated value insurance on my Pig. I'm a little more lax on my 40.
Even if they total your Pig, my understanding is that you can buy it back (after ins. co pays out) and get back to work.

That's good to know. I'll see what we can do as far as getting a check for the repair - hopefully that will be the extent of it. Would be nice if they threw some in for tree removal as well - not just the limbs but the whole damn tree.

Posted some this morning - see above. Haven't removed tree limbs yet to get full picture of damage. Waiting to have adjuster look it over first.
