Which rain gutter towers did you go with? I'm likely going to copy your rack, I realized there is no other decent option.
Those are the old school Con-Ferr gutter clamps, I picked them from someone here on Mud. The crossbars were fabbed up locally to match the contour of the roof rack.

Tonight was also a good night to put a few shots of grease in the pivots on the 4plus bumper, it was another thing that was a little stiff in cold weather.
Is it customary to add grease to the pivots? I assume you’re using the oil-impregnated bronze bushings. My instinct was to add zerks to make greasing simple but I haven’t figured out if they should be greased.

Adding grease zerks to those pivots was a huge help, the bushings get gummed up with road grime and who knows what else. After a few years they are super hard to open and close. After cleaning them out and greasing them they swing like new, pumping about a dozen shots of grease while opening and closing each pivot helps keep it operating nice and smooth, I usually lube them once a year in the winter.

Couple of broken ribs isn't an excuse on a powder day.

Let's talk tech.

Any of you fellas used anything like dynamat or a similar butyl based sound deadening mat on the inside of you 40? @pigmony Did you ever do this on your 40?

I'm thinking about using some type of self adhesive mat then some type of closed cell insulation, then a rubber mat of some type.

End goal is to reduce noise, and insulate the cab to some degree. It's all fun and games until it's below zero on the way to ski, with a piece of 14ga sheet metal under your feet.

As much as I drive my 40 now, it will be nice to make it reasonably comfortable.

Later we can talk about heater windshield wipers, because I could have used them today!

I have on our vehicles, but they aren’t 40s. Works really well. I’d want some kind of carpet or vinyl flooring like over the closed cell foam like you said though, because it’s not going to hold up to much traffic.

Dynamat is the leading brand, but also the most expensive. You can look at offbrand comparisons and Dynamat performs better, but not for the cost difference in my opinion. I went with a company called Siless, you can find it on Amazon. Works fantastic in our 80 and minitruck.

I'm leaning towards the Siless brand as well.

It would be really nice to be able to retain a little heat in the cab in the winter, I'll be doing some trial and error research on it for the next few years probably.

My biggest concern is moisture, rust, and that kind of crap.

There are a few threads I've been reading interested in the same thing. I don't have any experience. In the second thread, Nolan said he avoided putting Noico where rust was present.

For what it is worth.

(Broken ribs, toe, foot, hand all = great day skiing in my book - though I mainly ski New England that is like mash potatoes vs powder in the Rockies).

That was a concern living in TN as well. I’d take care of any rust thoroughly before you lay it down. Good thing is butyl doesn’t hold any moisture, especially compared to jute that’s in mo(i)st modern cars.

…I’ll see myself out now.

Beautiful conditions (sigh)…

Back when the mule was my go to pack animal at deer camp, I went round the merry go round with the less than stellar heating and the effects of ambient air temperature on 16ga steal. Nothing to the extent that you are experiencing but problematic and irritating just the same. I solved it to a great degree, at least where the cold metal is concerned, with the CCOT front PVC mat and a horse stall mat.

Shot of the aft section. Very similar pattern.

Front PVC mat. I used some target backer to make the pattern for the front mat. Same stall mat I used on the rear.
Again, I didn’t test it to the conditions you are experiencing but, it did significantly help.

I’m coating the underside of my tub with a product like Lizard Skin, then butyl mat on the inside. Also putting seam sealer everywhere I can find a leak.

I did the Monstaliner on the underside of my tub, probably should have done a little more research on other products at that stage. I'll need to weatherproof some holes in the floor pan now also.

I use the form-fitting floor insulation that CCOT sells and one of CityRacer’s mats. I don’t think it really helps with noise, but it does keep some of the heat away from my feet. I imagine it would do the same for cold. It’s easy to install and doesn’t need to stick to anything.

And not too spendy.

Years ago, Napa sold sound deadening rubber squares, about a foot square, self adhesive. I stuck these on floor panel, inside doors, underside of roof…pretty much anywhere a big metal panel could vibrate. They made a noticeable difference for fairly cheap price. Years later I added an insulated blanket type product to the floor. Looked like shredded cotton fiber with foil backing. Comes in a roll. Then added molded rubber mat over top. Big difference in heat, both keeping warm in winter and keeping the soles of Chacos from melting in summer. Also more quiet. But the moisture was a concern as you stated. I have a leak through cowl vent that drips to the floor and when really raining can make its way to the mat edge and soak the cotton backing. Can be a source for rust, and also stank. If you have no leaks or garage your ride and drive on bluebird days, no worries. Otherwise just make sure you can dry things out. Almost 20 years later, it’s still good. But to go play in mud and snow and park outside all winter in the 40, I choose rubber mat only. That way everything can dry out and I can see potential problems. Oh. And earplugs on the highway. Free at work PPE closet. :hillbilly:

I have been running for the last few years with this product from CAE item VB4.5. Not cheap. But would not absorb water. If the front foot wells got wet, I just lifted the sound deadener and let it dry. Great at insulating, so, so on noise.

But, I wanted to make it quieter and keep warmer/cooler. So I put this product from Amazon in the rear and over the rear wheel wells.

Amazon product ASIN B008NF84J8
And then had carpet made to fit. I made it so it can get pulled out, for the off chance it gets wet, that's why it goes around the seat brackets. I drove this home, 1.25 hrs from my upholstery guy. What a difference!! The carpet absorbs so much sound and controls the temp. I too drive my rig. 15k in the last couple years. I didn't realize it would make this much difference. HTH. Just my .02

Now I well be getting some cut to fit rubber floor mats. Weathertech or something similar.

I haven't done much with my 40 lately, accidentally spent some cruiser cash on another set of powder skis. Now I'm dealing with a transmission issue with my daughter's Ford Escape, and still working on getting rid of the crashed Camry. At the same time I'm trying to get the Audi prepped to flip, all while dealing with a couple of broken ribs.

Always something.
