So, I've replaced check valve, double checked the valve cover gasket, replaced the valve cover bolts (with the little rubber grommet gaskets) and one thing I noticed while having the air cleaner assembly off is that the air filter and floor of the inside of the air cleaner housing are saturated with motor oil (like a volume of liquid oil in there)

I assume that it's getting in there via the PCV hose and smog pump hoses (it is evident from the oily-ness of those hose connections)

Anybody have any idea why this is happening?

Is it bad? or is it actually helping the valves? Is the only side effect a little blue smoke and oil lose or is it a sign of something else that needs to be addressed.

Trap, Not sure on the smog pump hose bringing it in, possibly so. Pull the smog hose off the cleaner housing and run your finger or rag up in and see if its oily.. BUT..

I'm betting its a stuck open PCV valve. Pull it and shake it. Can you hear it rattle.. If not, get a new PCV on it. Probably will cure a lot of the issue. Seems my old Chevy motors were always "Huffing" oil back into the cleaner because of a stuck PCV valve.

When I say PCV, I'm speaking of Positive Crankcase Ventilation hose that goes from the valve cover (back by cylinder #6) to the air cleaner assembly, just the simple elbow hose...no valve in there...am I getting my terms mixed up? Is that not what that is?

All the hoses (not including small vacuum lines and main air inlet) are oily on the inside at the end that connects to the air cleaner assembly, but that could be due to circulation and only one hose is the source...

The two of you are talking about the same system. The PCV Valve is installed directly into the elbow that comes up out of the pushrod cover, on the US passenger side of the motor, back near the firewall. Once you take off the tube on top, you will see the PCV valve sticking up out of the side cover elbow. Pull it up out of the side cover elbow to test, replace if necessary.

PCV is the correct term but also, off the side cover at #6 the line comes into a valve then splits... One goes to the bottom of the cleaner and the other fork runs to the other side of the motor.

The valve I speak of comes before that fork in the lines and if stuck open usually blows oil up into the cleaner housing.

Was/is/should be on every standard maintenance/pm schedule/list. (wow! There is a lot of slashes/special characters in this sentence!!)
 
It also seems like the HAC is only working sporadically...it always runs well but sometimes it idles and revs considerably smoother and sometimes it seems rougher...like degrees of advance are changing. Need to check passenger side VCV and the HAC itself. I'll probably replace all the vacuum lines with Carr-Mcmaster silicone as well, just to be sure.
