This was the half ass under-hood paint job that the painter came up with. He did paint the rad support that looked nice.....none of the inner fenders were done..maybe we'll disassemble things one day and paint it black.

The hood was a mess....the inner structure was completely separated.....Benji glued used some panel bond to get it back in position.

Both my original hood and the replacement I found had separated. We glued it together with some adhesive the guys recommended before painting. Must be a common issue.

Got to see the prisoner....I mean Troopy.....today in body shop lockdown. It's really really close.

Supposedly paint on Monday and back to me at the end of next week but I don't think it's going to happen. I've heard this before.

Also received a fun phone call later today that the windshield cracked while it was being installed...which is perplexing since....the truck hasn't been painted. The painter came up with some great excuses as to why it was being installed(mainly because I'm rushing him to finish). The window guy(who I have known for 20 years) says the gasket was old...hard....too small......it was a brand new OEM gasket that I bought in August). It was also about 50 degrees this morning....which in FL is like 0 degrees everywhere else. So I'm thinking the gasket was too cold. Glass guy was upset and came over to chat tonight....he'll put the new windshield in along with the new gasket. Hopefully it will be above 50.

So....$400 later....a new windshield and gasket are on the way.

Worst part....the windshield was the only good part on the truck.

I will say the the body is SUPER straight. This painter may be slow and may make up stories about windshields but his work is really good. It's like a totally different truck now.

Hopefully they replaced exactly what they broke.

I would be KEENLY DISAPPOINTED if I supplied an OEM windshield and they picked up one from Walmart to replace it with.

That's interesting.

The thing that is really getting me is that the guy is blaming the gasket and how much he had to stretch it....but somehow it's my fault it broke. I'm not sure what I'll do...as I said, this is a guy I've known for over 20 years.....I was really surprised by his immediate lack of responsibility for it breaking. I suppose if the new gasket, which he wanted me to order, comes in and is the same as the first one, we'll have to have a discussion about who's paying for what.

Unfortunately the glass shop where he has worked for a really long time was bought by new people....so things have changed there...not for the better either.

I replaced what they broke. OEM. The one in the truck was aftermarket but as I said...it was really nice. Looked new.

All the other glass in the truck is new so I guess having a new front windshield will complete the package.

This is a Toyota thing... and it bothers me.

I had to repair this on my T100 back when I owned it... I repaired it on my 80 series... had to have to taken care of on my 70-series replacement hood... and my 2017 4Runner is showing signs (I think because of previous owner over-using the rotating brush car washes).

What gives?!

The hood separation is very common. The FJ73 I had probably was the worse case.

This is why I am having cold feet about getting my windshield replaced after a rock chip on the PZJ70. Eventually I will have to replace it though. I did have the chip repaired for now.

I hear that, the gold 70 had one tiny chip in a 29yr old OEM windshield that otherwise was really nice.

So now every piece of glass in the Troopy will be new. Maybe it was just meant to be that the windshield it came with broke.

I asked the body shop who painted mine to take the windscreen out before painting. They pretty much refused, which I argued against, but we came up with a compromise to lift the seal around the windscreen.

Glad they refused now.

I’ve found the same with workshops and body shops here. Excuses, delays and lack of responsibility. I’m trying really had not to sweat these things, but even those who you feel want to help end up screwing you in some way, especially here.

That's how my painter wanted to do it....lift the seal. But he'd tell me that it was going to be painted under it....as if the window was out. But then the glass guy is there and the truck is still in primer. Lol. This is my first time using this guy and it's a cheap paint job....so I don't expect the normal resto/show stuff we normally do but still...the window is out, why not paint under it...makes sense to me. I try not to micromanage new subs.....not all of them like it. The old subs that I have are used to my management style

Glass guy is coming over today to show me that the gasket doesn't fit....yet yesterday I saw it on the window. Lol. I didn't think the windshield was going to be this big of an issue...

Roof and hood have to be painted.....light wet sand with 1500 and then a buff. Then it comes home.

It's monumental when any project is at this stage and all that's left to do is well, a lot.

Its been so long since I've had the truck in my shop and started the parts buying process, I'm thinking I had better start laying things out next week to see what I actually bought. I was buying for 3 trucks at one point.
