In the above picture, you’ll see that someone had been it here before as evidenced by the “just use some random blue sh!t instead of actual gaskets”.
Likely the same dillweed that was in the transmission last. Fortunately everything seems fine.

I did get fortunate I guess with the oil pan. Got the last bolt out, set the gun down and by the time I turned back around the pan was basically falling off. It appears that no amount of fipg will make up for lack of quality. Must’ve been a tube and a half in there and it all pealed pretty much right of.

Last thing to report… the intermittent fuel issues previously spoken about have been narrowed down to something being up with the fuel pump. She no pump for some reason, then, she pump.

The only correlation I can think of is ambient air temperatures. Seems to not pump when it’s earlier/cooler/perhaps more humid?

We went through a whole thing towing Paul to Jimmy’s barn from another part of the property with his tractor because she wouldn’t start. Got her in the bay to the lift and tried one last time… fired right up. B!tch.

Spent Saturday and a good chunk of Sunday in Jimmy’s magical barn working on the transplant.

Got done:
- Old trans out
- T case off, disassembled, mostly cleaned up and ready for a rebuild kit from Georg @orangefj45
- speaking of Georg, installed new oil pan gasket using his excellent write up
- replaced the really hard to get to O2 sensor. The “easy” one is giving me fits.
- got the “new” trans out of my truck finally. It had tipped over and spilled ATF all over central Texas
- painted the timing marks on the flex plate.

So I decided to go a different route with the trans. Found one that has “around 100 miles on a fresh Valley Hybrids/Cruiser Bros refurb”. I should change the name of this truck to Georg.

CD’s trans got to take a ride around Texas and will ultimately find a home (t case) in one of CD’s builds and will probably try and get the trans to G as a core.

Even that lift has a little “Cruiser lean” :).

Trans and T case
Well,

Got the transmission stabbed without too much drama, tried not to get bogged down in cleaning everything that will just be dirty again. Kind of like like making your bed I guess.

We did clean the t case really well though to mate it with that nice and relatively fresh Valley Hybrids @orangefj45 rebuild.

Jimmy @CenTXFJ60 has loads of t case rebuilds under his belt, feel very fortunate to have such a tutor as a friend.

We are kind of stuck as the preload on the output shaft is too low so need source some shims.

Looks like you’re making great progress!!!!!

Georg @ Valley Hybrids
Almost there.
We put your kit in and the preload with the previous shim is right around 10 inch pounds, if I’m understanding correctly, that puts me in the used bearing category and I need to shim down to increase preload? Or does it really matter? Whomever was in here last did an interesting job?

The nut hasn’t been staked nor has the gasket been juiced up. Want to get this preload question solved first.

Feel free to reach out and I’ll be happy to chat. You have my number.

Your best friend when you have a fuel injected motor is a fuel pressure gauge, mounted inside, so you can monitor fuel pressure.
Since I installed my first TBI in a 40 in 1989, every install has had a gauge. Since motors require fuel and spark, having a fuel pressure gauge
can eliminate 50% of the guess work.

Curious about this mod. Where do you tap into the system?
I think I may have some sort of resistance thing going on with my fuel pump, but information is nice.

Welp, got her wrapped up and on the move.

Took some time getting the ATF level correct. That dipstick situation is pretty horrible. Went through a few “oh no” moments where things weren’t then were working. Another “oh sh!t” moment when I went on a real test drive and all of a sudden I had zero power in any gear!!

T case shifter slipped out… whew. King Jimbo adjusted that and we went on a little evening cruise.

anywhere on the supply side fuel line. I prefer to use the type that use electric senders. Mechanical gauges , oil, gas ,etc,
basically run a tube off a tee in the fuel or oil line right to the gauge and aren't recommended for install inside the cab.
Electric senders measure the pressures at the source and run a wire to the cab. They come in a few different sweep configurations
like 0-15psi, 0-30 or 0-100. prices range from 40.00 to 300.00 depending how fancy you like your gauges. Typical electronic senders
have a 1/8npt male thread. Tapping into a soft line would require something like this.....

That’s awesome, thank you kindly.
I may bother you again when it comes time to do.

Not the smoothest extraction from Jimbo B Coltrain’s Magical Barn but got her home.
Wife begrudgingly drove me the hour to said Magic barn, luckily I sent her on her way while I dealt with the “oh it’s morning, I’m just not going to start” issue this ‘lil bish has. I knew it was going to happen but in the end she almost always pretty much kinda starts for the most part-ish. Today proved it.

Nice little drive though the hill country, 56 miles?

She drove well, shifted smoove.

Mega Uber special hella right on thanks to my boy Jimmy. @CenTXFJ60

Stuff
Really dug into the cold start injector today. Had cleaned it up in the past but figured I’d give it another visit.

The fact that it won’t start (some of the time) when it is cooler out (in the morning) is suspect.

Always felt like a fuel pressure thing but then the spell where she would only start 10 minutes after filling up.

Did the majority of tests in the FSM according to the symptoms. Pump seems good, relay seems good, plug under Jack seems good.

FPR or an errant ground if she doesn’t fire up manana morning.

IMG_2766.jpeg

Fired right up this morning and it was quite a bit cooler out so 🤷🏽

I did end up buying a fuel pump just in case, guess I’ll hang to it to have on hand in the future.

I will probably replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator in the near future as I’ve heard those can go bad or at least replacing them improves things.

Who did your headliner? I just saw a photo of my new one and and it is, ahem, wanting, imo.

Oof, that doesn’t look good.
So he woke up?

My headliner is original believe it or not.
My interior is in amazing condition for being 36 years old.

He did. My buddy managed to do ~25 minute test drive but unfortunately didn't take a video.
Yeah, my original headliner was also in great shape but had a big hole torn in it while getting pained. :bang:
Not sure if there's anyway to get that tightened up at this point.

That is a shame about your headliner

I know Jimmy is pretty good at them but he’s busy. It might be worth reaching out to him regardless.

Hope homeboy doesn’t charge you for that “install”…
