A/C on a FJ40? (1 Viewer)

Thank you! I have an LS engine and I am using the factory GM compressor. From what I’ve read the retrofit kit for the factory 6 cylinder is a direct bolt on unit. You will have to drill a few holes for the evaporator.

I went with red Raptor Liner inside. I used Lizard Skin heat and sound proofing underneath, with topcoat applied over that to make it stronger. I also have Lizard Skin under the Raptor. Way overkill.

Amazing!!!

Did you do it yourself, or have someone else do it?

"IF" you did it yourself, please tell me about the process. What was your clean & prep surface area process like?

Did you use a BIG air compressor and air tools to spray it, or did you use hand tools like a roller & brushes?

Thank you!

You can spray or roll Raptor Liner. Lizard Skin doesn’t roll well and they only recommend to spray it, which is what I did.

I used the Lizard Skin sprayer with a 60 gallon compressor to spray the Raptor Liner in hard to reach areas, and I sprayed a light coat across the tub to create a thicker texture, the. I rolled the rest. I don’t recommend spraying anything but Lizard Skin from their gun as the straw and nozzle are a bit too large for the Raptor Liner.

I replaced my tub so prep was easy there. I sprayed an epoxy primer first, then I sprayed the other products as recommended by the manufacturer.

Nice! Man, I sure miss having my big air compressor and tools.

As to your original question about the stock 6 cylinder engine and a/c…my ‘74 had a/c installed by the toyota dealer in ‘76 and it ran beautifully…never was an issue and I loved the slimline look instead of the box

Is it possible to add A/C to an FJ40 with a Toyota straight 6, either an F, or an F2? I haven't received mine yet, just purchased and got to figure out shipping it here to Florida, so I don't know if there are bolt holes available for an A/C compressor mounting bracket or not. For the inside I know Vintage air makes some good units for classic vehicles, I just don't know if it will mount under the hood. But I do know it gets pretty hot and humid here in Florida.

Thank you!
It will and is the choice unite preferred, they make one especially for FJ40’s

Thank you. Can you send me a link?
It's easy to find on their website. Two different kits, one has a "high performance blower" and is, therefore, a bit more expensive.

Another option.
I've looked at this site and heard some good things, but they don't have a Toyota selection for a kit. Are you thinking of getting everything separately, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

There isn’t a YOTA specific option.

The boys at RCLC used the “mock up kit” for the fab work.

“The Hurricane Mockup Case is designed to test fit into vehicle and check for clearance to make sure the Hurricane unit will fit into the correct mounting location.

There are correctly placed stickers to show where the fittings exit the case on the 1000/1100 (high exit), 2000/2100 (side exit/clean firewall), and 3000/3100 (low exit) units.

Included is both the standard defrost plenum and the 90 degree defrost adapter for checking proper fit and clearance based on your application.

As I recall, we’re looking at the 2000/2100 kit as the go to for Mule 2.0.

Thank you! I reached out to them and they got back with me. They are in Texas, and since I was born and raised in Texas I was familiar with them. Back in the 1990's when I got super lucky and was published in 2 International Streed Rod / Hot Rod magazines, In 1994 Vintage Air was famous for (and even had a SUPER COOL poster of it) of taking a 2 door sport coupe Studebaker (that does NOT sound cool, but it LOOKED cool) painted all black, put in a V8 and if I remember correctly it was all motor and no nitro or twin turbos like what the future brought, and set a world record at the Bonneville Salt Flats for the fastest pass while running the air conditioning. The poster with the 1953 Studebaker stopped on the salt bed and looking great said "A Cool 200" but it actually ran..... 219 MPH with the A/C running. Even now... 30 years later... that's a SWEET looking ride and THAT is getting it done! I'm inspired... I think I'm going to call and see if the founder of Vintage Air is still alive and if so, see if he will autograph a poster for me to hang in my garage and share with my boys. I was fortunate to see the car in person at the Nationals. Here is a link to the article and pics:

Enjoy!

Yep- mock-up box is a lot lighter and less costly if fit is a question. Old Air Hurricane is a pretty clean option.

Hmmm. What company? Would you please send me a link? I'm on a CRAZY tight budget so if I can save, I'm in!

You won’t save by buying a mock-up unit. Just research which unit is right for you. If budget is super tight, there have been some threads that use the rear AC units from minivans out of the junkyard.
