Everything.....

He is the technical editor of Toyota Trails.

Amongst many other titles, but a super nice guy that's efficiency and flat/hourly rates, alone, make this viable.

Dissertation forthcoming. Prepping in notes.

Y'all know me. I'm wordy.

I succumbed to mediocrity, once again, but for the sake of wheeling time and the fact I do not have a suitable location I can fit the 80 on jack stands for two weeks while some of the following was to be performed and some's out of my realm of capability, actual or assumed.

The original plan was to pull the diffs and TC and ship to Robbie in to cryo diff gears, rebuild diffs, refresh actuators, regear with 5.29s, refresh TC (all OE bearings and seals, of course) and install the Marlin Crawler TC gears.

Then, decided "while I'm there", might as well cryo OE axles and Birf's, followed by a wild hair to get the entire vehicle to Robbie's, so that "while I'm there", the HG could proactively be replaced, valves ground and cooling system components installed to coincide, along with 105 PS gearbox, power steering pump and cooler installed, full axle rebuild, new seals everywhere.

All OE parts from the Shaman beno, of course.

I had originally planned to drive up and hang out, but extenuating circumstances arose and Robbie's availability narrowed down to next week or sometime next year, so made it happen now.

Yes, I'm certifiably crazy, but "while I'm there" I might as well enjoy it.

@ beno,

Another small grievance with the new company's policy, detrimental to both of us.

Mailing itemized receipts is perfectly normal and appreciated in business, I send and receive, daily, BUT to business addresses, NOT to residences, where mail is free game and with exponential implications.

Now, I realize your single (and I'm still subscribing to the "local fare" thread you've delayed updating), but for those of us living in marital bliss, there's a simple formula that we adhere to that covers just about all aspects of husbandry (oh what I'd give if it were a true equation for my version of marital bliss) , however unfair, especially when it comes to expendable cash.

"Good for him x 3 = Good for her"

So, if an expenditure that's good for me is $100, then there's a forthcoming expenditure that's good for her of $300, that all falls well within this unwritten code of partiality.

Even though the inherent quality of the mechanical art that is mine makes perfect sense, twenty more pairs of shoes makes little, considering she's only two feet anyway. They don't increase her capability, (she's smoking hot, especially with no shoes, and walks just fine in any or none), reliability, or dependability, as a fresh set of Birf's might mine.

So, if you'd please note to NOT MAIL itemized invoices to me, we both stand to gain. I no more saw the opened envelope on the counter and the smoking computer out and opened to one of many full shopping bags that are now cutting into the PP80 fund.

All for humor.

Always been concerned about the diff and TC gears, but surgery to the TC was most concerning.

The rest was merely because the opportunity presented itself, with no concern to capabilities.

I spoke with several local shops but anytime I hear "no problem, but we've never done that" I cringe and move on. The most reputable shop said "No way", and I appreciated the reply and listened to the why. Solidified the decision.

Will leave the Radflo order, armor, and liner/paint upon return (plus communication, stereo, cargo storage.......) so I've still plenty to still do, thankfully. Hahaha.

By the way, you can pollute this thread with the special pics of your Cruiser anytime. As long as there's a Cruiser in the pic, I'm in the clear. Hahahahaha.

Good to hear TJM is sending the longer leads. One project I've still to complete on the FJC is finishing relocation of the solenoid to the engine bay and heavy gauge cable is astronomically high.

If you have a local West Marine they'll cut and crimp cable to any length.. My local had a busted crimper so I'm happy they came through..

Chris, every time I see there is a new post in your thread I think to myself "what has he done now"? Thinking that you couldn't possibly have out done yourself...

Well tonight I am once again amazed at your progress. Your projects are so far off my radar, I didn't even know they existed! Cryo treatment for birfs? Whoda thunk?! It's so fun to read about and see the progress. I like to think that I'm living vicariously through you. It's very fun to watch you spend your money, you sure know how to do it right!

As for me, I keep waiting to get that call, where a lawyer tells me an unknown relative has passed on, leaving me his/her vast fortune. Once I got that call I would buy lots of shoes (for the wifey) and then transform my LC into something that resembles yours. I would cryo everything, double the size of the flux capacitor and then install an aftermarket hyperdrive. At that point I feel I would have a comparable rig. But until then....

just a comment from someone who did get that call a while ago, believe me, you don't really want to get it

You're in arguably the best hands there is for an 80. I looked at sending mine up for Headgasket too.

His flat rate on the HG (according to thread perusals, not a recently stated price) is less than
the local, notable Toyota shop (outside dealer), so a no brainer.

I know Robbie's unlikely to set up shop in Tulsa, but I'd think there'd be enough in Texas to warrant a HG Road Trip. Bring Robbie to y'all.

Robbie says he doesn't travel anymore, and I dont really blame him. And yes his price was very good. It was just going to cost be $800 each way to ship the LX. It's not completely off my radar but I am still on the fence about doing a turbo and if I do that, that shop will do some head work and the HG.

He's going to be doing a little traveling soon. Prepping to run a chase truck through the Baja in a couple of weeks, then............

If you get serious about shipping, hit Riverrunner up. With enough advance notice, bet he could find a reasonable rate, though $800 doesn't really sound that bad, from a freight charge perspective, considering airfare and fuel cost if ferrying yourself.

Watching the turbo developments, but only as a spectator and student. The experiences y'all discuss are well above my comprehension level, but find it interesting.

Being the not-so-proud owner of an 04' 6.0L Power Smoke F-350, three things scare me. Head Gaskets, EGR/EGC, and Turbo's, and the reason for the proactive replacement on the 1FZ by a known professional.

450k on the 6.0L (known POS) but with 432 miles on the odometer, the cab was pulled to swap HGs. It's been all downhill from there.

Before the warranty ran out, had (4) HG replacements, (3) Head swaps (so three more HGs), countless premature EGR valves, (3) EGCs, and (1) turbo.

Since then, swapped for an 05 6.0L with 93k (melted the original) that's had heads reworked, ARP studs, new turbo, EGR delete, EGC delete, and STILL through a rod through the side of the "bulletproof" block after a HP oil pump replacement.

Found a insurance fraud 6.0L that had been burned out, and swapped the entire top end earlier this year, so should be good to go, this time. Hahahahaha.

Why have I not just bought a new one, you ask?

Said five years ago, the next one ton truck I bought would be a diesel Toyota.

I'm still waiting.

Bobby Long?

http://www.pirate4x4.com/articles/productreviews/superbirfield

There's no date on this article I can find, but has to be old considering it claims him to be "unknown".

FJNewb, an FJC buddy, brought the cryo process to light during conversations regarding diff gears a few years back, and continued the education (he's in engineering. We all know how they are. : flipoff2:) through the axles, BUT Robbie's the one that suggested this process for the Birf's (maybe threads on from others. I didn't look) after reading through my "Bulletproof Axle" thread, even though we all know these won't be infallible to failure, especially if I can't keep the wheels on the ground.

I said the same to him, as I did Onur, many months ago.

Do it like you'd do your own.

Fixed that for the both of us.

I've worked since 14, and have had to harder than others because I lack formal education. (The reason I don't know how to properly punctuate.)

Until the lending debacle in 09-10', worked 70-80 hour weeks. Didn't have time to enjoy even family, let alone personal endeavors.

Since it's slowed, I've taken time to smell the roses.

Stop waiting.

You don't wait on the trail for the boulder to move out of the way, you lock it in 4L and attempt to go over it.

If unsuccessful, you try a different line, approach, or angle.

Life's no different.

Spoil her, even if you have to do without.

Know her sizes, styles, likes and dislikes. Be capable of picking out an entire outfit that she'd love to wear and feel good wearing.

Sound ghey?

Yes, but the equivalent to her knowing your 80s gear ratio, what line to pick or what tires for the rocks.

In the process of exercising the above, found my best friend in my wife, again.......even though she still doesn't know the difference between an FJC, FZJ or LX.

Hahahahaha.

If this would fit on a bumper sticker you'd have your first patron right here. It must be early because this really hit home for me. Thanks for the morning inspiration!

Yeah very smart to go with a known performer when it comes to these trucks, I have seen lots of places that come recommended that didn't even know as much as I do about fairly simple things like coolant swaps, etc.

When I talked to Robbie it was quite obvious this guy was on the ball and even just a little bit of what he knew was way above and beyond most Cruiser Shops.

There are 4 shops that I think are right at the top of their game and would be the places I would take my truck for major work and they are in no particular order; Robbie (Powder Pig), Slee, Proffits, and TLC.

I agree on the headgasket, it needs to be done and it needs to be done right. I think too many shops take shortcuts, don't check the head and block surfaces, etc, and just slap a new gasket on there and call it good. I will probably have my EGR deleted as well when I do my HG, just because I see no reason to route exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber, and I know many will disagree with me, but I don't. I also see no reason to vent the crank case back into the intake.....

Good luck, you are in good hands, your 80 is going to be good for another 300k!

De nada.

I don't have signatures here, but elsewhere, include a statement from Mudder "puulboy" (Wikid on FJCF. I call him Don) that affected me similarly.

(easier to screen shot than type all.)

(The second (Big Turtle) is Josh from Cruiser Corps. When he gets going, I have to make sure I don't have a gulp of something going down, or it'll end up nasally projected on whatever device I'm texting/reading post on. Funny chit.)

Banking on it. I usually get all usable life out of a vehicle......then have a hard time getting rid of because I've grown attached. Hahahahaha.
