Not trying to start anything but who honestly drives their modified 80 75 plus? Mine has the minimum modifications and I roll on the highway at 60-65.

I drive 70-85 MPH every day. It take a while to get up to that speed, so I like to keep it there when I am. I draft behind trucks and other cars when I can.

Depending on the trip and the urgency, I will run close to 95. We have a few sections of highway that are 75 MPH limits and I typically run 9 MPH over, so that would be a consistently held 84 MPH for two hours at a time, with bursts to 95 for passing as necessary.

I watch well ahead of where I am in traffic so I can plan my route accordingly around all the other "rocks in the stream". I consistently use my turn signals, run with my headlights on, always wear my seatbelts. I just like speed.

5.29 @ ~3000 rpm is about 74mph
4.11 @ ~3000 rpm is about 95mph and its hard to get more rpm

Guess my gears and tire size:grinpimp:

4.11 and 265/75-16......

Stock gears and 315's

I have 5.29s and 315s and do a lot of highway driving. It is not ideal. I normally drive 70-75, rarely if ever faster than that. The higher driveline RPMs ecasperbate any slight driveline imbalances you may have. This increases the noise and vibration. I have never gotten better than 12 mpg, regardless of conditions, which I think may be due to the higher highway RPMs. I think it’s a good setup for a wheeler, not worth it if you drive on the highway a lot.

5.29's and 37's. I'm a fan!
The speedo is off though. When I'm doing 70 to 75 it says i'm doing 80 to 84. When I'm cruising at 75ish I'm around 2800 rpm. Totally tolerable living on the front range and constantly going to the mountains.

I'm planning on going to 37's or maybe 40's......

till then, what kind of hole shot can i expect?? haha!
A lot of opinions here...lol. But to answer your question, I'm running what the title of this thread says plus a significant amount of armor & overlanding gear or weight (7200 lbs at weigh station) and coming from stock gears. First thing I noticed when I got it back together on the test run was how peppy it seemed. Actually better than stock. More rpm's on highway, of course, but if you're going with 37's or larger, IMHO, it'd be foolish to keep stock gearing. I had talked with Zuk also before my gear swap and was convinced to run 5.29s with my 315s, especially since I'm planning to tow an overlanding trailer.
Edit: BTW get a Yellowbox!

I thought about regear often.....till the @NLXTACY’s turbo thread.:bounce2::bounce:

Oh and yes cursing at 75 on the highway is where it’s at!

That's great! I curse at all speeds!

So.....quick followup. I have 120ish miles on the new Nitro's now. The differentials are loosening up a little, throttle response is like its never been before! Smooth easy acceleration from stops and firm confident shifts all the way to overdrive.

albeit.......overdrive is now shifting in at around 35-40 mph real speed :)

I havent had it at highway speeds for more than a few seconds, but I've found its off around 15ish percent. Physical 45 mph is now 54 by the speedo. haha!!! 65 mph is around 80ish, so around 2700ish RPM. Until the 37's or 40's (havent made up my mind) go on, it will be just fine for the occasional speeds the LX sees.

Overall, I am absolutely loving the mechanical torque throughout the powerband and confidence of the vehicle around town. Completely different animal. I should have done this years ago!!

I drive >75 whenever I can, in both of our 80series - just because I can :flipoff2: - (did I mention both of them are S/Ced :grinpimp:)

[and I'd drive any other vehicle at good speed just as well - hey, I grew up with the Autobahn, so what do you expect :p]

I repeat...lol...get a Yellowbox. Then you can fine tune your speedometer to whatever tire size you're running by adjusting the ratio. It took a few weeks to get here from OZ, but it was well worth the wait!

Loaded down with about 300#’s of gear, armor, 4.88’s, 315’s i struggle to do 60 up some of the steep grades in az. Im gonna do the 10% gear reduction in t-case this spring.

Im perfectly happy doing 65-70, but other drivers are NOT. I hate holding people up, so id like a little more gear, not to mention some day ill 37 my ride, like an adult.

Whats odd is: with my setup it seems to struggle going over rocks on the trail in high, but low is touchy af!!! Maybe i should be usung my cdl then, dunno if that would do a damn thing. An 8” rock is a struggle and seems like i am applying a lot of throttle, but in low it wants to snap my neck and is too much. Maybe i need to click my “start in 2nd” button.

Yep I run a lot in Low, 2nd gear start.
