I am in the process of installing power steering on my 40. I have a newer 2F that has mounting holes for the power steering pump on the driver's side and holes for an alternator bracket on the passenger side. I have an FJ60 power steering bracket and pump with attached reservoir. I have a two groove harmonic balancer and two groove water pump pulley. I also have what I think is the correct alternator bracket, but things aren't lining up properly. The bracket has a two sets of holes that the alternator could fit into. One set places it slightly back and the belt would line up with the inside set of grooves. This would have the belt loop around the alternator, inside harmonic balancer groove and inside water pump pulley groove. The power steering belt would loop around the outside water pump pulley groove and outside harmonic balancer groove.

The other set of holes moves it forward slightly and lines it up with the outside set of pulleys.

Some factors to consider...

My power steering pump pulley has a deep V groove.
My alternator pulley is has a flat bottom groove.
My water pump pulley has an inside flat bottom groove and outside deep V groove.
My harmonic balancer has an inside wide V groove and an outside deep V groove.

Do the pulleys being used by a common belt need to be the same shape?

Pics...

Alternator lined up in what I call the inside position. This would require a spacer between the alternator and bracket. Here the belt lines up with the inside set of grooves, but the belt hits part of the water pump housing.

Here it is lined up in the outside position.

Here's a view looking from the other side at the water pump pulley and harmonic balancer.

So...what do I have wrong? Wrong alternator bracket, wrong pulleys or something else?

1985 2F engine in a '74...

My alternator lines up in what you call the "outside" position, and the belt runs from the Alternator, to the PS Pump, to the Outside pulley on the crank. I have 3 pulleys on the crank.

My water pump runs to the middle crank pulley, and I have a tensioner mounted to take up the slack.

No Smog Pump.

My "inner pulley" on the crank is empty - I think it ran to the Air Conditioning Compressor in the "stock" configuration.

Good Luck -

Rocky

Where are all the smart people? I can't be the only one who has had this issue.

Alex, the 3rd picture appears to show the alternator in the correct position. Keep in mind that the late 2fs with PS used 1 belt around the crank, alt, and PS pump and then another around the crank, smog pump and water pump. You may need a smog punt eliminator pulley to make things work in a stock config.

I'm at work and can't see my cruiser from here LOL!!! But IIRC the alternator needs to be in the "outside" position as my alternator and bracket is set up on the outside like Rocky's and mine is a 78 2f (in a 40), stock set up. I used an MAF pump bracket and the belt went to the back (or second) grove of my water pump. As for the types of pulley's and belts, mine were for the V belts and I actually had to run the narrowist one for the P.S. to keep it from making noise (belt squeeling). Oh, and I used a chevy P.S. pump, this may be a difference.

If I put it in the outside position, how does the tensioner work?

I realize the ear on the nut needs to face down. Does the bolt go through the threaded hole in the alternator and into the non threaded hole in the tensioner nut? I tried and the hole in the nut is smaller than the hole in the alternator, so no go.

you need the special bolt that goes through to the back side of that tensioner.

Part number, picture, source?

alex on my 74 I put a 2f in it also... seems there was alot of bs with the alt. I did get a different one now. let me look tonight as I just cant remember. I know I had to make some spacers.

So you can see I did mine kind of how you had your before… I really don’t think it is the correct way and I had to get some spacers so its kind of getto… but it does work.

Alex, it's a special bolt with a skinny non-threaded end on it that threads into the alternator and then sits in the tensioner nut.

Yeah, it makes sense. I just called CDan and it's an FJ60 bolt and it's discontinued. I guess I need to call my screw guy and have one made.

Anyone else need one as I'm sure there'll be a min buy?

I prob have one somewhere. I know I have one that might have damaged threads. It would at least be good to copy from.

Jeff, Can you take a picture of it if you find it?

I would bet that if you knew someone with a lathe, they could chuck up a standard bolt and make something like this in about 5 minutes.....

I just ordered one from Cruiserparts.net. It should be here on Friday.

In case anyone wanted a better picture of the bolt, here it is...

Man, wish I had an adjustment like that!! I have pull and tug to get my belt tight, then once I get it the belt tight I use a free hand to tighten one bolt so I can let go!!!
