Also, don’t forget if you stay with stock 60mm offset, you will probably need spacers for 34”.

I believe the Evo Corse that jrmudder runs is the dakarzero 17x8 with 40mm offset, which, according to @TeCKis300 from a different thread, should be just about perfect for the 34s. @jrmudder92 is currently running Cooper St maxx 285/75/17 which is just shy of 34 inches (33.8). I’m going to get a look of it in person on Monday, along with the rest of his rig!! While jrmudder is there, I’m going to talk to my parents about possibly buying his set.

Already spoke to my dad briefly, and he’s obviously not as excited as I am but he is happy for me and my parents will be glad to take a look. This is a chance for me to give them an idea of what I’m trying to do with my own LX! I really appreciate @jrmudder92 for volunteering his time to give us a nice look at his beautiful cruiser!

Not gonna lie, salivation levels are very, very high every time I gaze at his build thread and see a nice shot of his tires and rims. I mean like, possibly higher than rock warrior levels. Reminds me of Tiger when he’s inches away from a medium-rare steak and I swear he’s even drooling from his nose (and eyes). Yes, I do give him the steak after tormenting him for eternity with it (dog years, don’t check my math).

I really haven’t given these enough thought because of their price (more than the good deals i could find on used RWs).

Okay, so I finally have some money for tires here in 2 weeks which got me thinking about rims again. I did not buy the evo corse since I had to prioritize things for the new house first and didn’t want to make jrmud wait.

That turned out to be a good thing because lately I’ve been leaning towards the thought that the rock warriors will not be enough. It can take a beating but can still get cracked and scratched up/end up being high maintenance in long run. They look good at first but not so much after a few beatings. It just doesn’t feel like a “buy once cry once” solution, or feel like “the last set of rims I’ll ever need”.

Anyways, I really need to give what @grinchy says more thought and save myself the journey of taking a long time to make up my mind, only to go with his advice in the end xD.

He mentioned several times that he will end up importing 17” steelies.

Long story short, I shot huntsman in AU an email asking for a bulk order to the US. I know they won’t ship to US for individual orders but I’m sure I can find buyers for at least a few pallets worth, seeing as how 17 inch steelies for tundras/LCs are actually nonexistent in the US?

Unless someone knows a source where I can order just 1 set for a reasonable price?

I have a 03 tundra with 17 inch wheels the spare tire is a full size spare and it has a steel rim. I believe I saw them on eBay when I was searching rooms for my bj-73 a year or so ago.

03 Tundras ( and all 1st Gen) are 6 lug.

you can order 17" steelies full custom on Alibaba for $109 each (full, shipped, cost). Lead time though is 60- 90 days. I didn't buy them so I can't fully endorse the vendor, but they were very responsive pre-sale.

64usd/wheel x5pcs+225usd freight with taxes= 545usd.

Idk why i didn't think to look at alibaba, seeing as how i've been spending time on there looking for a manufacturer for RC electronics and 3D printers! You never fail to dissapoint. I got a long night ahead of screening alibaba suppliers and sending out inquiries.

My list of manufacturers to contact/inquire so far:

20% North American Market

40% NA Market

10% NA Market

the NA Market % is to show how familiar they are with selling to the US/how much of their sales goes to North America. This may affect things like lead times.

I just started six or eight conversations for suppliers that quoted 4 to 6 piece minimums.
Some alloys. Some steel, but I was really after steel. I did find some pretty convincing very similar styles to brand name alloys, definitely wheels are getting made overtime or falling off the trucks.

Didn't think about that one. You can get wheel adapters and spacers, but they can get expensive negating the money you save using a readily available rim. you also have to be diligent torquing them down properly and checking them regularly. The legit steel wheel is better than a different wheel with spacers.

Adding for consideration from the Hivemind.

This is Huntsman from AU, who says they do not ship to the US but maybe they'll consider a bulk order?

This is Temple Tyres and Wheels from AU, found this post on their Facebook page:

I'm sure i'm not the only one who thinks that front bumper looks pretty good.

Really dig both of those options, does not look like either one has an option to ship to the US. May have to give them a call and see if I can arrange something.

My phone can't call out of the country XD. I sent them messages on facebook inquiring about bulk orders to the US. Fingers crossed! If you get ahold of them on the phone please let me know what they say regarding shipping to US. Thank you!

Curious what's motivating this. Steelies are so heavy.
I don't think i'll be swapping the wheels out enough for the extra weight to matter much.

Main thing i want is to not have to worry about buying another set of rims again, and alloys can get cracked and be high maintenance in the long run. They also don't look too good after a few beatings, so i think steel looks better in the long run. It's nice to know that i will never have to worry about my rims cracking and being the reason i am stuck somewhere.

That and i can get like 3-5 sets of steelies shipped from China for the price of 1 set of Rock Warriors, that's if i can even find a decent set of RWs. Even outside of RWs, finding right offset/fitment can prove difficult as well as expensive (minus the tundra used sets that occasionally pops up, but i'm not crazy about those). It's looking like it might be easier to go custom steelies, or go with steelies made specifically for the 200s/79s/Tundras that are more common in the rest of the world.

Thanks, just curious. I love the look of a classic D-window steelie but not practical for me. Agree on the cost of RW. They aren't worth it IMO. I think lots of people fantasize about the ability to hammer a bent steel wheel back in shape when deep in the trail but wouldn't optimize for that almost 0% chance scenario.

I don't picture me doing that either but i find those videos quite funny; it's just nice to know that it's an option.

The decision for steelies for me was based almost entirely how long it would last, as well as costs; from what i am reading, basically forever! It's going to be nice to have a set of rims where i really will give 0 thoughts about bashing it hard, versus a nice set of alloys where i always find myself reconsidering every scratch i put on it.

So Huntsman replied to me and they are down for shipping pallets over, i am waiting on shipping quotes as well as responses from other suppliers.

Usually but not always. Sometimes less material ends up weighing in around the same ballpark as alloy options. Trying to find those specs out as well since they aren't listed. The stock LX rims are pretty light for a 20"... I just weighed one off my 2013 and it was a touch over 38lbs

The other option I am considering is the ICON Vector 5's and they are 30lbs. If the steelies are in the same ballpark I may pursue that route just to do something unconventional for the LX. If they are 50lb boat anchors then I'll pass.

Should be in the 15kg area, 33lb for the 17”.
That is what the Toyota steelies (17x7) are quoted at.
