I would recommend holding off. Spending any money on nearly bald tires is a waste. I would look for newer tire take offs from wheel/car dealers if you must go used route. Also, in my area the 29lb tundra 18" wheels sell for next to nothing, so i'd be looking for those if wanting to go down in size on the cheap. There are 3 sets within 150 miles of me for $100 or less.

@D21FJ60 I am in the Raleigh area about 2.5 hours away. I would drive for the right set of rims, and if by some miracle those tundra rims already have good 34s on them, then I’d be willing to drive much further (as long as cost efficient to make the round trip).

Will hold off and keep my eyes open for used set of rims in the Raleigh area over next month, which will then determine if I am looking for 20s or 18 tires. Thanks again mud for keeping me on the straight and narrow; it’s so easy to get sidetracked!

The $100 for four alloy rims in Weddington is the ticket. Then you can get some new 18” tires and be set.
Thank you, I doubt this changes anything but he said the manufacture year is 2018 instead. I read the wrong number apparently. Let me look at the weddington one and inquire. Thanks!

these tires don't give me as much pause as others. but I have a history of running used tires too. Personal preference is getting off of 20s, but like you say, if these have 8/32nd (the minimum I'd buy used) then you can run them down to 6/32nd this year and have a year to find some 17" or 18" rims you really like. tire tread depth is a thing when you're offroad, but for a mild AT there wouldn't be high expectation anyhow.

Either way I will keep eye open for 17/18s and won’t get new tires til then, and the real question is if $300 to swap to these is worth it so that I can still make beach trips and etc in the mean time; and be able to drive on the sand. Also some fishing trips and etc now that the freezing temps are finally gone (flowers died last week to the last wave of freezing temps)!

The same guy who had the copper tires being discussed, also has these 18 inch tundra rims (5 lugs). Waiting on more pictures. He wants 150, says there are scratches but they are balanced.

I don't run used tires. There are too many unknowns. The risk (probability x impact) is too high because even if it is a low probability event, the impact could be severe. Having driven a fair amount in the area you live in, there is way too much high speed traffic (even off the highway) that eats away at your safety margins. If you're bombing down the highway in Raleigh and blow a tire in traffic, who knows what happens...

An exception might be like new takeoffs that haven't seen any use. But with used tires, you're rolling the dice.

This is likely not a good option because of shipping, but I have a set of five '16 land cruiser rims with tires on them. They came on it when I bought my '16 LC used from a Lexus dealer last fall. They are all season tires, and I need more aggressive tires for what I drive on. I swapped them out for new tires (surprise!) on different rims. You'd need to swap your TPMS sensors over. Keep in mind as an option, if you are set on going used. I'd be willing to work with you on a fair price. Shipping on them would cost a small fortune (guessing a road trip to VT is out of your comfort zone).

16s is big enough for the brakes?? I always thought 17 was minimum. Unless the tires are 34s, then it’s likely too much just for the rims. If you have 34s on there and 16s are wide enough for my brakes, then I could be in VT tomorrow lol. I do appreciate you offering!

@grinchy i referenced OEM Wheel Weights - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/oem-wheel-weights.463603/ and these look like #7 (08+ TRd tundra rims) and 36 lbs each? Other one is 29lb each, 7 lbs difference doesn’t seem like a deal breaker, but I haven’t changed that many tires.

There is also the chance the weddington one is sold already, as it was from 3 weeks ago. I sent them an email earlier, awaiting response.

‘16 the year, not 16” the measurement.

The stock wheels and tires from my 2016 Land Cruiser are 18 inches in diameter.

those big blade alloys weigh as much as the 18" steelies. they are heavy.
RWs are 24lb, but they are 17"
The other 18" are 27 to 30 lb. With the 29lb version the easiest to find.
I wouldn't go with anything over 30lb.

I have my blonde moments just like everybody else. Move along people nothing to see here.

You said Virginia tech? That’s only 3 hours from me. Biggest thing is I don’t need the tires. Would you sell just the rims, and if so how much?

VT = Vermont, in this case. A bit further...

Road trip !

All roads lead back to rock warriors and I’m not complaining. Thank you for reminding me why I keep leaning towards them in the first place. I am a small person so the total weight of rims and tires is actually quite important, since I plan on swapping the spare by myself when needed.

Im going to get more than my moneys worth out of this trailer! Load #2 done (couch, desk and lawn mower) and going for load #3 now. Later I’m going to try parking both the LX and trailer into the garage and hope they fit!

Rock warriors are nice - I had them on a Tundra Rock Warrior. At one point they were plentiful and relatively cheap, now they’ve become harder to find and more costly. The weight difference is less about a couple of pounds here or there when changing a tire, and more about performance gains from unsprung weight. They’re still heavy pigs to wrestle around with a proper beefy tire on them. The strength of a forged wheel is another key benefit in hard core off-roading (or racing), but given the way you’ve talked about using your rig in the past, I don’t see how that is going to benefit you. If you can find a set for a good deal, there isn’t really a downside, but you can buy a lot of other cast factory Toyota 18” rims from a Tundra, Sequoia or Land Cruiser for much less than the cost of most rock warriors these days. Last of all, don’t forget a matching spare rim/tire. I think people try to save a buck or two just upgrading the four on the axles, but you need your spare to match the rolling diameter to preserve your drivetrain. And, with a matching spare, you can do a five tire rotation, which can help extend time between tire replacements a little.

Going to take a look at jmudders set and possibly work something out! The evo corse is my second favorite after the RWs if I was going to spend that kind of money on rims.

The ICON Vectors are nice too..A little more offset than most like to go.. but lots of people running them. I almost regret not going this route over RWs.
