I strive to experience both sides of the fence. My "resto" quality 40, 55 and 60 are all fixed or maintained for with semi-purist care. I "do it right, D*mn it" But my trail FJ40 (currently building), FJ55 and FJ60 (wifes) are all fixed "well" usually over built and MUCH less expensively.

Come on! you GOTTA love an effective redneck remedy!

My $.02... God Bless a 2 cent fix!

Is there room for more pennies? I have a lot of slop! :)

TOBASH

I gotta say your avatar plainly grosses me out....

And Your sig line......well....:hhmm:

well mark i found the TT with the 2 penny fix...it was Rod LaHaise who wrote it...in 1997....soooo 13 years ago.

I dont know if that was the 1st writeup of it...but...thats the one i was remembering.

:)

I had a few minutes to peak into the wayback files at the shop this afternoon. My tech tip writeup for TT was in the summer of '92. If I knew how to work my scanner with Linux [my current OS for this computer] I would scan the page in for y'all.

I was cleaning up in the garage last night and saw the relay rod end I replaced last week. I'm waiting on parts for all my projects so I tore it apart and took some pictures
Grungy but it's was going in the trash so I didn't fool with it too much

Pull the cotter pin out and unscrew this thingy

The parts were pretty much welded in mine, luckily I had the factory SST needed to remove the inner ball seat. (Don't be fooled into thinking it is a piece of bailing wire with a hook bent in the end.)

I'm really glad I replaced this.

After dipping stuff for a while, it looked better. Still pretty ragged.

Here is what a penny looks like in reference to the ball seat. Not quite the same diameter.

So, anybody who joins after 92 isn't privey to this information, since 92 mags are no longer available?

Okay, this isn't rocket science here is a sketch that shows where to put the pennies. Just take it apart and clean everything up. Put a penny inside the housing, install one ball seat, grease, install the other ball seat, grease, put the other penny in install spring, grease, install the Tee shaped spring seat, install the screw cap. Tighten until the screw bottoms out then back off 1 to 1-1/3 turn per the FSM, install the cotter pin. Done.

All they do is compensate for wear in the spring.

It seems to me that the pennies are just going to make the screw bottom out sooner and regardless of the pennies, backing off 1 to 1-1/3 turns sets the spring tension, no matter how worn out the spring is. If the spring's in that bad of shape, maybe only back off 2/3 of a turn.

My .02 cents worth; Get it,........

I think I did this trick on my Runner, like 16.5 years ago. If memory serves, it's still working for me.

Dont' hate on the simple fixes. Not everything in life needs to be replaced when it gets a lttle age to it. That's whats wrong with our society nowadays; everything is disposable. If you ever lived somewhere where there isn't a parts store on every corner, (or a ton of websites/mailorder houses for Cruiser parts), you may appreciate the homegrown fixes. I know I do. That's the beauty of these older vehicles to me. Call me cheap, but I love things like this.

My thoughts also, however the right-hand penny (in the pic) would actually move the ball thingy physically to the left (aft wrt to the vehicle) by the thickness of the penny. The left penny would be the one to compensate for the reduction in spring load due to age. So what does moving the ball thingy aft do to the steering?

Also, how does this stay sealed (around the ball thingy in the slot)? I don't see any seal but I do see the grease zirk.

I'm planning on trying this trick but, gonna wait till the OBAMA coin comes out, even if its too big I'll mill it down to size as I really wouldn't mind sticking his ROTTEN ASS in something and cranking down the s*** out of it......

I love this!!! Not the kind of language you'll find me using, but the sentiment is the same as mine!!
