If I remember right, back when we all did this trick, the rebuild kits were not available- you could only buy the whole arm assy, which was expensive.

I could be wrong, but that is why I put pennies in there, until I saw the rebuild kits some 10 years later for $35 and bought one

Interesting use of a penny. And I thought the pennies went into your shoes every time you drove a FJ40 cuz you needed all the luck you could get.

Better yet coverage: rabbits foot on the key chain and 6 crawdad heads in a Bugler draw-string tobacco sack hanging from the rear view mirror..........:grinpimp:

Thirty-five years + and it still gets me home everytime with no good luck charm. This is the reason I drive a Land Cruiser. If I wanted to use good luck charms I would drive a jeep:rolleyes:

Did you drive it with the pennies in all that time?

If so that is one hell of an effective kludge.

More like proper maintenance plays the role in your success story... without it, would be just another POS...........

I've got seven cruisers, all 62 or earlier. One has a 2F everything else is original running gear. While there are not all running. For these to have all lasted almost fifty years with the original running gear tells me this were made to last. It's to bad I can't say the same about the bodies. Living in AZ helps alot with that:cheers:

All this talk about drag-link repair made me think I better check inventory, WOW! down to 2 kits on the shelf, better reorder as I hate to think about being in a bind and resort to this "JIPPO" 2 penny song and dance............

:meh:

Grant, is it OK if I use a 10 Yen coin?

Improvisation is exactly what I like about these trucks, so long as it's safe. It's how the "sport" is advanced.

I like the imaginative fix. It MIGHT be a better fix, can anyone say? What is the evidence?

I shudder to mention that I have 3 saginaws installed in my little horde and am unable to test.

That somehow sounds odd considering your sig:eek:

I've done the penny trick as a temp fix a couple of times. It's just to take up the slack.

You didn't mention the crawdads, that goes more with the PBR sig line, where do you think I saved the heads from........:grinpimp:

I'm planning on trying this trick but, gonna wait till the OBAMA coin comes out, even if its too big I'll mill it down to size as I really wouldn't mind sticking his ROTTEN ASS in something and cranking down the s*** out of it......

Some people like to spend money, there are some cheap fixes that are bad, and some that are just good, this looks like a good one. I would not hesitate to throw in 2 cents over $70 if the outcome is likely the same. Even if the penny's only last half as long we are talking 4 cents. This fix is getting book marked for me.

Agreed

I've given this a lot of thought. I think this might actually be a better than new solution. I just replaced all my TRE and drag link ends on the FJ60 so I have the old ones to play around with.

:lol::lol::lol::lol: That's rich! me TOO!

Great find. Love these back yard fixes. You can always fix with new parts when available later. When I was a young a lot of the old timers I knew had lots of what I called "tricks of the trade". This kind of knowledge just came from lots of experience and having a good head on there shoulders.

well mark i found the TT with the 2 penny fix...it was Rod LaHaise who wrote it...in 1997....soooo 13 years ago.

I dont know if that was the 1st writeup of it...but...thats the one i was remembering.

i only put one penny in...i thought it was in the location i showed in the pic i posted earlyer...but...this diagram shows it in a different location...i dont remember now where i put that darn penny

well here's a pic of the article i highlitted the pennies in red for better viewing...B&W TT's back then were hard to see at times :)

Any way this article can be OCR'd, .PDF'ed, or scanned with better quality so I and the rest of the mudders can read the article first hand???

Pretty Please???

Thanks in Advance,

T

Thought I'd try it today while I was waiting on the ups man.......Took about 30 minutes because I'm a little slow......Probably could do it tomorrow in 5 minutes....super easy.......put one Lincoln on each side of the seats and put it back together, greased and tested.....mine wasnt overly worn but it did tighten it up a bit.....very noticable improvement.............after seeing where the pennies actually go you feel much better about using pocket change to tweak your steering.....
