1st gen Tundra vs. 80 series

unfortunately, the person has already resolved that, yes, the 80 can do it but with "extreme" difficulty. kind of like another gentleman who said that his 100 can do what an 80 can but more comfortably. ;)

so there's no point in forcing him to change his mind. no amount of pics (even if the driver is smiling with satisfaction) or videos would probably convince him.

i just hope that the inquirer would be able to make a balanced and well-informed decision. hopefully, an 80, though.

myself, my 80 is just perfect for my needs. and no amount of convincing would make me think otherwise. :D

Damn....if the Tundra destroys the 80 that bad...the Sequoia must be the greatest offroad vehicle ever invented!

You should have used a pic of TiredIron's 80, or perhaps Action Jacksons (did he sell it yet?).

Not that CDan's isn't friggin sweet (cause it sure as heck beats mine), but those two mentioned above are the epitome of an 80 series crawler build.

In all fairness you can't really count TiredIron's truck... from the waist down it's only an 80 in spirit.

But, yeah, I agree. Even right out of the wrapper the 80 can go where few others can, even when they're modded.

I strapped a stuck Tundra off a trail here yesterday. He was following me on the trail and got stuck in a spot I never imagined he would have. I had to backtrack about 200 feet because I hadn't even looked back and realized he was stuck; my 80 just rolled over it like it wasn't there. I pulled him right off and past, too.

Sounds like he can't afford his toys, and shouldn't be out playing with things he can't afford to fix. He should get a suzuki and go wheel that.

don't even try to enlighten the guy...he just don't get it! 80's are way cooler...it's that simple

(the V6 inline is very torqueee, which is a good thing).

Obviously this guy knows what he is talking about, since he doesn't even know what engine he has. :grinpimp:

the Tundra guy said:
I didn’t think my post was that bad – I gave the 80 series credit for trying – it wasn’t designed for the type of terrain we try to traverse with it.

And the tundra was? Oh dear. Yeah, I'd say this guy was not worth the time.

thats all that needs to be said.

although a tundra is a toyota, IMOP its just another boring run of the mill truck.

Yeah, the guy sounds kind of bitter about 'mud and 80s... Maybe we were mean to him, on the forum, a long time ago?

although a tundra is a toyota, IMOP its just another boring run of the mill truck that will run forever!

I fixed your statement, fawker :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:.

Why bother to give the 80 any P.R. ?

Let's keep quiet about the whole 80 thing, otherwise the market will dry up.

The more people bashing 80 series, the better by me. I love the idea that the guy who bought the School Bus is bashing, just keeps more in the marketplace if I ever go looking for an extra one or if mine got stolen, etc.

Bottom line, none of us are worried about what others think of what we drive, or else we'de be a bunch of H2 drivers with big egos, so why worry about ding-dong's opinion of our wagons?

I know my future kids will hate me, but I can only imagine I'll still have my 80 in 15-20 years, and it won't be pretty. But like my parents, what I drive is not even remotely influenced by other people. My 80 is the newest rig in the family, and my Dad thinks it was crazy I bought it, but I knew the long term mechanical reliabilty and the payout long term, even @ 13 mpg.

Besides, even IF the 80 wasn't as good as it is off-road, that's only one facet of these as a rig. Reliabilty, safety, ease & simplicity of maintaining, there's a ton of places this rig does a great job, and is so versatile it's just hard/impossible to even find a rig that shines as well as these do across the board. Add to that the fact that a nice example doesn't seem to cost more than $15K anymore and you have a real winner.

But let's just keep that our little secret.

I must say I do thing the 1st gen Tundra does rock off road but it does not blow away an 80! I learned most of my wheeling from the passenger seat of my buddies Tundra and we have thrashed that thing and it is just about beat up enough to enter it into the Baja 250. Although the first time I wheeled with him I was the one strapping up his Tundra!

It can’t vertical climb like my Tundra but that is a wheelbase thing.

What exactly is the difference in wheel base? I would say the vertical climb would be more due to weight and no weight in the back of a Tundra although I would hate to back the Tundra down if it didn't make the crest! That front end comes around QUICK I learned that my second time out in the cruiser.....

I don't really think you know who or what kind of Tundra you guys are making fun of. The author of this thread has a HI-9 3link front, HI-9 4link rear all coil overs with jonneys, marlin crawler, Custom fuel cell, BFG Krawlers and so on. He was the first to Marlin a Tundra, First to SAS a Tundra, has custom harness built and is one clean rig and did it all while it was still under warenty. I has been built since day one and has had several different stages. There will be an article finally in Offroad on it soon. Since the write up it has been Linked and Coiled. The Tundra featured in 4wd toy owners is similar and maybe a more extreme being bobbed and having an atlas it is a stand out rig and has been mostly owner fabed.

I'm sorry he may have hurt some feelings here he hurt mine the first time I met him but his tundra could out wheel an 80 any day except at the mall. I have a built 80 he has the Slee school bus. I like my 80 I have driven the tundra and worked on it a lot. In the rocks and in the mud 80's are a joke when going up against a 4runner, taco, or a SAS tundra. Sure we have locks stock and 80s are preety good but when the going gets rough we get dented. Saying that I still have mine I'm not a Rocker. I like my wagon but when it comes to hard core it is to big, to heavy, has to much sheet metal and glass, and is $$$ to have the body straightened out. Towing, in the mud, and in the sand it is slow but I don't mind I like them. They are super easy to mod and make a wheeler and if I can only have one rig make it an 80 but there are better vehicles for different purposes. Slee doesn't even wheel a full sized 80.

I know I may not be making any friends but very few of you guys know a wrench from your ass but at least you try. Look at the threads. The 80 community is very sheltered and when a guys that really wheels or wrenches take a look at our forum they laugh. Except for a few stand outs not many built 80s see anything a stock locked 80 cant do.

I read his post on Tundra Solutions and the 80 basher guy sounds like a good guy. I think things don't translate from spoken to written word sometimes. At least he's above the b.s. that Mikey just posted

Firetruck, that is kinda bunk that you cross-posted this just to start things up.(but you're still ok in my book :) ) It was a nothing, 3 post thread until all the rukus..
