The inside is relatively clean but one big problem - someone got crazy as usual with the RTV . Make absolutely certain depending upon how far the tear down progresses to clean that stuff up - it loves to find oil galleries and plug up things that need pressurized oil .
RTV should only be sold to people who are trained and licensed .

If you really must use some sort of adhesive on a gasket , Spray Tack from Permatex . Or , if no gasket/alternative use The Right Stuff . Just use both sparingly .

The engine stand looks fine. It is a lot of weight hanging out there. Get as much leverage on the bar as you can when you rotate it so it doesn't get away from you. Have you decided how far you intend to disassemble it?

If you've got four securely in you should be good. Just don't try to roll it over by yourself. You'll be in for the ride of your life...

I think I want to take it down completely. So,far it looks clean, so I think the plan would be - clean, manga flux, new rings, polish cylinders and pistons, check spring rates, new bearings, seals, gaskets, replace any parts with wear. Hopefully pistons and cylinders are fine.

Any other suggestions? What steps am I missing?

Since it's been anointed with RTV - clean all oil passages . You can get kits with different diameter brushes that work in a drill , they help a lot . Might not be a bad idea to have a shop hot tank the block - it's a pain with the weight but worth the work imho .

I learned from my head rebuild that you do not want polished cylinders. You want honed cylinders :wrench:

Sounds like a plan. Looking forward to lots of pics.

Ok. Honed (rougher), not polished. Got it. Trying to find a good Vae Victus-friendly thread (lots of pictures) to take on this rebuild. Always hard to find once you are ready for that task. Any suggestions welcomed (threads or ideas). Perhaps I'll start an engine only thread.

Sarge is right. Go get the block and head super duty cleaned. I know a good place if you need it.

I am in awe for the work that you've done... Giving me much needed inspiration for rebuilding my 1968.... Thank you! Keep the pictures coming if you can :)

Engine thread would probably be easier for future rookie research , much like your trans thread - that one came out great , especially commonly asked questions/answers .
Not kidding about RTV , the stuff finds it's way into places you wouldn't believe and destroys engines . I turn blood red in the face every time I see it and start swearing uncontrollably ....

This is how I did it.

So when you roll it over, do the extension arms try to move, or are you able to tighten them down enough to hold them in place?

Negative. I torqued those puppies so they wouldn't budge!

I will second to have someone help turn the bar while you take the weight off center pivot. On occasion I recruited my wife, much to her dismay.

You mean like this?

I monkeyed with my f.5 for an hour or so when I first put it on the stand 6 months ago. I found that it was pretty easy to turn after getting its center of gravity as close to the rotational axis of the stand as possible. Left-right is easy as it is pretty close to semetrical that way. Up-down was harder. KY longhunter's looks pretty close. This should be done with the head off btw. One you are reinstalling the head you should have the engine in its normal attitude anyway with no further processes that require rotation.

Most important question:

What color are you going to paint the engine, VV?

Check out trollhole's "big gay 2f build" thread for inspiration if you dare. :rainbow::worms::rainbow::flipoff2:

Say what? I was more concerned with getting the engine out of my garage and off to the rebuilder than balancing it on the stand. No wonder it is still sitting there :flipoff2:

Color - I think a nice shade of ugly assed red to match the exterior, don't you think?
