UPDATE 8/14/24: OEM Google Sheets parts list here

Hey folks, sorry for yet another engine refresh thread, but I haven't run into a parts list with part numbers and links to source the parts so here we go.

Anything I'm glaringly missing to get some TLC while the *engine is out*? I've already done a bunch of stuff to my '97 like fuel filter, PHH and the like. I may be missing part #s for the pan arch seal and whatever other bits and bobs that come from DIY tribal knowledge. I will be farming the work out myself.

Again, "while the engine's out*, anything obvious I'm missing? Danke.

My engine gasket kit from Toyota came with the valve cover kit you list, and was about 125 dollars cheaper ordering it through my local dealer. I do get a discount though from them. I’d have to go look up the part number if ya want it

Looking at the kit by wits end it includes the valve cover stuff also so that’s not need on your refresh. He does include the oil cooler stuff which Toyota doesn’t would have to be order separately, plus manifold studs and nuts, I was able to reuse mine no prob

Order yourself some fipg black from Toyota also and reseal the pans and pan arch. If you wanna take it further order a Asian timing cover and new water pump. You can get the cover for around 200 off amazon along with the pump for round 65

I added the head bolts and washers below - thx to the homey @NorCalFJ100 .

Water pump I did a while back when I was baselining. Thx.

Does anyone have the timing cover part number handy?

Part # would be cool to have in case there are others who run by this thread that want it. Thx, dude.

Does one need this oil pump bushing if you're buying a new factory block? I don't want to reuse the one from the og engine.

Does one need this oil pump bushing if you're buying a new factory block? I don't want to reuse the one from the og engine.

As I recall, the new factory black comes with a fresh bushing. Only need a new one if you're rebuilding the old block.

Just a few thoughts as I'm currently in the process of doing a rebuild of my engine; I plan on doing a "newbie engine rebuild thread" but here's a few things I've learned thus far:

-You can go as deep as you want. Some things that may make sense while you're in there: Engine mount bushings, brake booster, firewall steering seal, new lower steering joint, flushing out your evaporator, FW coolant valve, all your EGR system stuff, new O2 sensors and exhaust gaskets, any of the fasteners that you think are rusty and need replacing, hit every seal in the engine, all the hoses that are hard to reach(vacuum, coolant, fuel).
-As I understand it the part you have listed for the head is pretty much just the casting (and maybe a few seals?)....I was originally going to purchase new but then realized it does not come with any valves/springs/shims or, more importantly, the camshafts which are crazy expensive. So...unless all the head innards are good but the block is warped....may not be worth it.
-You can also do other inspections/work such as inspecting the crossmember support at the steering box for cracking & weld/repair as necessary. Replacing some of your front suspension bushings is also much easier when you can stand in the engine bay like the sway bar bushings, etc.
-weld in a oil return on the oil pan when its out if you think a turbo may be in your future.

Good point on the new head. This pic is Onur’s from the discontinued parts thread.

Midfat also brought up a salient point on who does the work. I’m still debating whether I go with a local engine builder or ship my entire truck to Valley Hybrid in NorCal. I wish I had the wherewithal to do it myself, but it’s just not in the cards for me at this point in my life.

Your new short block will not come with the dowel pins to locate the head. Part #90253-15007. There are several other alignment pins for the timing cover, tranny and oil pan. Also a pin for an oil port if I recall. Sorry, I don't have numbers handy for all. You may be able to carefully remove them from your original block.
The new block also comes with a smaller coolant drain port. It is designed to use a newer style drain plug.

I've updated the list.

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of gaskets/washers and other bits/bobs like the dowel pins mentioned above (would love additional OEM part #s for "while in there" items for improved coverage).
  • I've read that more fastidious owners have observed hairline cracks in the cylinder head so measuring twice and cutting once where I can control it (same goes for their og short block)
  • I'm not sure whether getting a new head without all new innards will lead to other complications because mixing new with used
  • I'm still not clear on whether the engine kit (04111-66036) is necessary on its own
  • Let me clarify again that I've already addressed the water pump, radiator, power steering pump/hose, fuel filter, disti, MAF, coolant hoses, brake booster, PHH, other rubbers, VCV etc so these will be missing below (easily found via search on their own)
  • I still haven't been able to locate the NLA rear body mounts to which you can source from an HDJ81 per resident LC scholar Onur (update: found 'em)

  • Updated with dowels/pins/plugs to add to new short block (thx to this thread)
  • I'm still missing an expertly curated list of all the OEM parts (NLA, OK to reuse, etc) to add to the new head to essentially build a new OEM long block (cam shafts, timing chain, valves, tensioners, etc)
  • Valve grind kit (04112-66036) is included in the engine kit (04111-66036) including additional parts as shown below (thx to Onur for the diagram)
    • Per this thread, engine kit (04111-66061) is the same as the engine kit (04111-66036), but near half the price (thx to SNLC)

  • Added sensors that attach to the head and short block since I'm replacing both with new (thx to this thread)
  • Added head innards
  • Now that I've placed my parts order, I'm pretty much nearing my limit of how far I want to take the pre-planned parts hoarding so feel free to slice/dice what I have as you see fit
  • In summary, the list consists of new short block, new head + innards, a good number of stuff to refresh it while it's out, new mounts on chassis while engine is at the machine shop, address infamous rear main seal, freshen up all the body mounts, replace the only remaining og locking actuator on my rig, replace og engine harness and some other stuff I'm sure I'll have to address when the pros have it in their hands.
    • EGR/VSV is another tedious list of its own in another thread of mine ready to go
    • Many of the other major under hood hoses, filters, pumps, radiator, etc were swapped out ~3 years of ownership so not featured here
    • The actual engine work will be handled by a well reputed machine shop here in LA with a healthy dose of 1FZ know-how
    • For those making offers on my K294 '97 after all this is done, I won't accept a penny less than $60K as of Q4 2021 :D
Again, big thanks to every forum member I cited and continue to lean on here on ih8.

I lied. I bought more parts. I hope this insanity helps others!
  • Added a bunch of oil cooler bits and bobs
  • Same deal for the valve odds and ends
  • "" timing chain/cover area
  • "" crankshaft area
  • Don't mind the shim because they come in a variety of sizes and will vary depending on your engine situation
  • Good news for me is that the cylinder head is already at the dealership and the short block is being made right now in Japan with a 10/20 eta per my Toyota parts dude

you've done a ton of work just compiling this list, thanks for sharing.

I hope to put this to good use some day and I know this will serve as an excellent reference for others here. I also think this will be the first time I ever say your price of $60k seems reasonable. ;)

I look forward to reading about your rebuild journey soon! I apologize in advance that it’s not an FSM league list by any stretch, yet features just enough parts curation to reflect the reality of my 80’s first engine rebuild+.

I’ve come to find out the lifters 13751-66020 are discontinued per a USA based Toyota parts counter. I can’t find them on partsouq and don’t want to order from amayama.

I’ll keep digging.
