Have a sip of coffee, dude. I said I'd keep digging.

It’s night time. I’m already drinking.

Here's likely the final update to the raw OEM parts list that's custom to my rebuild. You're not seeing a lot of the major accessories like pumps, radiator, hoses and filters because they were already replaced with new 3 years ago. I'm also replacing every bit of the EGR system (parts gathering dust as we speak).

As you can see from the go, there are non-engine related parts that I incrementally added as a "while in there" effort. I accrued the part numbers by just doing a bunch of search on ih8, DM'ing some other rebuild OPs (u know who u r thx) and referencing partsouq db. I'm certain to miss bits and pieces, but live & learn, enjoying the journey. :)
  • The lifters took the longest to source, even longer than the short block which came straight from Japan
  • I'm just going to let the machine shop handle the shims for obvious reasons
  • The engine harness I got maybe half a year or so ago is made in Vietnam; everything else on my list is Japan made
  • I sourced parts from four primary vendors: 1) A SoCal Toyota parts center; 2) Partsouq; 3) Boch Toyota; and 4) Amayama
    • Partsouq is definitely the most reliable and best packaged
    • Amayama is hit or miss so I avoided them except for the bigger ticket items that cost markedly less than Partsouq or weren't available via Partsouq (consistently longest to ship)
    • Boch Toyota hasn't botched an order yet, but their packaging needs work and their communication is sparse which is ironic given they're USA-based
    • Fedex charged duty tax via snail mail on the power steering gear order which might be because the thing is pushing 50lbs (maybe raised some eyebrows at the airport)
    • If anyone wants a referral to the SoCal Toyota parts guy, DM me (shipping a short block is a non-starter!)

Once again this is clearly a tremendous effort and you are without a doubt going to save some mudders a lot of time.

I hope to start the same job within the next year or so and I'll definitely be referring to this when that time comes.
Thanks again
🙏
Hope to get a chance to grab a beer with you while looking longingly at both of our refreshed 80s at a time that will surely come. :)

This list is great. Maybe I shouldn't ask, but how much should one budget for this kind of engine rebuild?

Diy - $5 to 6kish if you reuse the block. Add another couple grand if buying new. Add more if not sourcing parts from overseas. Budget $15k to $20k for turn key at a reputable shop.

🤜🏼🤛🏼

My final OEM parts list above = $16.5K which includes pretty aggressive discounts from Middle East vendors + USA Toyota parts counters.

Based on my notes and parts desc, if you take out the non-engine, while-in-there parts, it’ll sit closer to $10-11K roughly.

As time passes, you will run into NLA and pricing increases so ymmv.

Fast forward 4 months short of 2 years from my original post, here's the finished product.

Food for thought, sourcing new Toyota shims might be the critical path to buttoning things up especially if you're building a new head so take this factor into account. Lifters, too. There's so little demand for them that they were in short supply here and overseas during my build.

Enjoy the process my friends and thanks for playing!

P.S. This dude is legit for sourcing T parts

Fantastic Thread, thank @COYS and all contributors :flipoff2:

I'm planning an engine refresh, praying I find a supercharger somewhere on someone's shelf, and steering refresh this year.

Does anyone recall or know, I remember reading somewhere here on mud the new 80 series steering box 44110-60212 came with the 105 sector shaft already installed.

Anyone have a lead on a new or used fairly priced supercharger also?

Rock on Mud :crybaby:
