I hadn’t checked in on your build thread for a few months. Wow. You have worked hard on your rig! I still can’t believe you took a rusty NY rig, brought it to LA of all places, and rehabbed/restored it. If there is a cruiser heaven, I’m pretty sure you are in. Some serious positive cruiser karma for sure…

Great job man!
Thank you, brother! I would say I’m getting pretty close to the finish line here definitely was a fun little project in the garage
I think I’m getting the hang of it lol

arnak,
Beautiful work! If you had consulted with manufacturing, there would have been many automatic transmissions saved over the years! Keep up the great work!
I think if people maintained their vehicles better, you know with fluid changes and so on and so forth and adjustments it’ll go a long way

Problem is many people buy these vehicles from other people… but to your point, I can almost guarantee that my first A440f was mishandled by the PO.

You’re missing an S at the end of PO. 😂☕

Especially if he was towing with it a lot, did yours have a tow hook hitch back there?

A) the PO is a friend. Just easily taken by mechanics who “can fix it”.

B) there is a receiver hitch. Certainly put on by the PPO. Not sure what a “tow hook hitch” is though.
Also, my friend the PO is a she, not a he.

These A440f transmissions are widely considered “slush boxes” for a reason.

Personally, I am glad, 100 fold, to not have one in my truck.

Thanks for the clarification didn’t know it was a friend lol
I use to have a fj62 before this one put about 300k miles on it, rebuilt the trans once at 150k this years ago, but came out solid never had any issues same A440F not L trans, F has 1 line in the valve body, L has 2 lines more modern better fuel economy on the L

I really am rooting for you to have success.

The fj40 I have is so much smaller than the fj62 I just got a clean 2F motor for it finally :)
Gonna do a EFI injection update on it and couple other things probably lockers etc

Damn dude chill out with all this attention to detail you’re making us all look bad

arnak,
Please keep up the good work! Fabricate and MacGyver to your hearts content. I enjoy the creative solutions and it gives me hope to keep working on the rig. Freaking great work!

I’m gonna do a cleaner job obviously just so many little holes everywhere from rust, I’ll do a update on the bigger pieces I’m making

Can you share any tips or secrets on welding the thinner metals? I bought a Vulcan 180 mig to tackle the roof rust after the engine gets in but haven’t had much practice on the thin sheet metal. I do watch fitzee’s fabrication occasionally.

Clean metal.
Small wire like .023.
Tack don’t weld.
Don’t be in a hurry, let things cool.

Watch that dude Fritz(?) on you tube. He’s great.

Hold a nice thick aluminum peace behind it as a blocking shield it absorbs the heat and doesn’t blow through, worked for me lol
