Finally put the Cruiser to work today. Friend of mine needed a dead orange tree pulled out. The goal was to use the pto on it to make sure it was working, but ran into a few problems. There was no tension on the line and had it properly engaged, although I kept thinking it wasn't....had my buddy get in and I looked underneath to see if the shaft was at least spinning. The sheer pin had shattered into a bunch of pieces before there was any tension...but it was spinning and engaged, so I know it works...just need a new/bigger pin.

We ended up pulling it out the old fashioned way and the cruiser did great. The root structure doesn't look big, but it took a lot of brute force and hard pulling both ways...lockers would have been nice.

I have the Cooper st maxx tires and the grip they have is very impressive. I was digging holes like nothing with them.

nice , good to see it getting a work out. Would love to see a video and hear that turbo !

16 penny nail makes a strong field fix...(for the shear pin)

we shot a bit of video but the muffler was on the other side, not sure if you can hear it spool..it's on my buddies camera...he is on shift tomorrow so may be able to send it to me so I can see/listen.

tree'ish :)

thanks a lot crzr45...I think I have that size laying around. Would that possibly work as a beefier permanent fix?

According to Wayne you can drill out the sheer pin hole to accommodate a larger pin and that will increase the capacity of your PTO winch.
I will have to "Google" treeish. : )

There is very little material in the yoke where the hole is drilled. It would need to be reinforced in some manner. I remember seeing something where a Nissan yoke was used for this modification.

CruiserDan,
i can understand your concern.
the size of the hole needs to be enlarged roughly 2 drill bit sizes to accommodate the larger factory sheer pin. i have done the mod a couple times with a couple good heavy winchings with no ill side effects.
there are those that have run a heat treated small bolt through
and
i have seen the results when you forget to disengage the winch and start driving.

a sheer pin is your safety margin, remove it and you best be paying attention everytime you use the winch.

me, i don't like how low the PTO sits for off road. i don't like the relying on a running motor to use it.
but
it does have its applications.

install it in the back and stick a 8274 in the front. of course this would mean a lot of fabrication and the need for a custom fuel tank.

great information...thanks everyone. Do you think a 16 penny nail would break under a heavy load if forgotten like the shear pin, or would it be along the lines of the heat treated bolt and turn your day into a bad one if forgotten?

Does anyone know where I can get a shear pin for the current side? I can't find a part number on toyodiy

cheers.

The part number for my 88 BJ74 is 90255-04002. That number is not alive in this market. The older FJ40 pin is 90255-04001. That number is still alive.

So knock on wood but I've had the cruiser back for a bit now since the injector pump seals were replaced and I still have no leaks. Also my previous issue of random rough starts in the morning due to fuel starvation seems to have been eliminated. It's not cold (well it's freezing for me) here but hit low 40s and started up without hesitation. Haven't had a rough start yet.

box completed

Box is finally finished, minus the tie-downs which I can add at any times. Attached rope so I can grab the latch easier for the seat. Arm doesn't fit down there with the box in place.

Where did you get the carpet material to cover it? Still need to find a good option to cover my box in my 80.
