Dear all! I have the option to buy this vehicle. It's in very good condition and was used for military purposes. The question is this: understanding that it's a light-duty version, is it a good option to buy, or is it better to buy an FJ70? Thanks for your comments

The idea, really, is to own it and use it for overland trips, transporting a jet ski, and 70% on-roading. Basically, the question is about the potential resale value afterward versus the FJ70.

What are you calling 'overlanding'? To me the term means long term/long distance vehicle based travel where you require/desire a degree of autonomy. A 70 is in my opinion not big enough to do that, unless you are very Spartan, alone and happy to sleep in a tent/hammock.

If it's a choice between an RJ70 and an FJ70, the FJ will have more power (and far worse consumption), good if you want to tow a lot or do highway driving. But the RJ70 is strong enough for what it is.

I don't think you need to worry much about depreciation on a vehicle this old. The RJ will be cheaper to maintain because it shares parts with the Hilux etc which is/was globally very common.

Consider that the 1988 Light Duty models are very rare, and some body parts are unavailable.
Also, its suspension is unique; there were changes with the "new" model that followed the Light Duty Line (square headlight), which in my opinion is better.
Without a doubt, a light duty is a great vehicle and has a much more comfortable ride on the road.

But if you're asking about a 1988 RJ70 or an FJ70, I'd go for the FJ70 without a doubt, and if you can find an FZJ70, even better.
