Easy...if you're on ANY type of gov't assistance (except for social security/SS disability) then you can't vote. Work to get yourself off the gov't teet and then you can vote.

There was good reason for how elections we're setup initially
bring w2 and ID to vote. better yet, get voting onto the blockchain asap and stop all the BS. one use private keys that are verified by 10000s of decentralized computers.
Continuously amazed that so much time and tax money is spent to market things like voting, food subsidies, and "free" healthcare. We really do have it good when people have to be convinced to participate in these.

LOL oh my . Sorry I am not sure that is supposed to be funny.
So when this country was founded only white, protestant, land owning, males could vote. Is that what we are advocating for here? As someone who was on unemployment for a year after I got unceremoniously fired, it was exactly what I needed to help me get back on my feet. I almost never comment on internet nonsense because it never leads to anything positive, but these comments struck a nerve. Early on in my life i read about John Rawls veil of ignorance philosophy, it resonated with me and you never know when you might need a little help in life. To say that we need to do away with social programs because some people abuse it, just baffles me. People see what they want to see, but those who say that that most of the people on government assistance are deadbeats have a simplistic view of society.

I assume you ( or your employer) paid into the unemployment insurance program? That's fine. No one is mad when you use insurance. That is different from free lunches, Section 8, free cell phones, food stamps, medicaid for your kids you can't afford, or going to the ER for a sore throat because you know it will be free for you (but others end up paying for it). All that needs to stop. People need to be held accountable for their actions.
If I need some help in life, I have a good group of friends who we all look out for each other, a small but close family, work 'friends' who would help, a church, insurance, and my own savings and hard work ethic. These would all be utilized before I asked the 'man' for a handout.
But, to my point, by giving power back to the people to encourage them to make better decisions and reducing the size of the nanny state, that reduces the size of the gov't....and what politician wants that?

I'm pretty sure the landowner comments were in jest. For the record, nobody said anything about doing away with social programs and nobody called those who use them deadbeats.

Taxation without representation is a form of tyranny and was the main reason the 13 colonies revolted against the British Empire and went on to create the country as we know it.

I know our fathers didn't get everything right and i am not sure they were even thinking that far ahead. I think the part referring voting and land owners in general was frame work. I believe they were trying to establish a system with limited resources where they were focusing on people who generally had a responsibility to look after their family's and their future. I would believe they might have projected that someone in this position generally made good decisions in their role. again i think this was a starting point. because the way the system can be tuned they installed the process for future changes. I don't believe it should be limited to faith, gender or race. but, with land owners paying taxes and moving forward as such they might have had a better understanding of check and balance, give and take, what ever you want to call it, as they planned, saved, and paid their way. I'm not a history buff and I have forgotten more then i care to recall. I do think everyone has a voice and a right. I don't think everyone in an assistance program is a deadbeat but, I have seen my share of deadbeats and abusers of said systems. anybody working 1st hand in the rental business knows exactly what i am talking about. there are a lot of people who believe the government owes them something just because it is there. Resources have limits you can't just keep creating services and expect them to be funded freely thus lasting forever. additionally you can't fix everything in one swipe. you have to look at what you have and to the best you can to help the most you can. then you refine and work towards the parts you missed. we all have to make hard choices and sacrifices to make it through the day. like you i almost never comment on the internet as i can not begin to describe or explain in a paragraph or two everything about everything. History was recorded by the eyes and the hand of the writer, often with their own spin on it and more often then not taken out of context. I am all about helping others but, if your not going to at least attempt to try i'm probably not going to carry further then the next stop. but, like everything there are exception and we need to remain flexible.
The skin color was in reference to how elections were set up initially. Its not just white/black. Baptists weren't allowed to vote, Catholics weren't allowed to vote. You sound lucky to have friends and family that could help should you need, that's great, but what if you didn't? What if you were born into different circumstances? Would you not ask for a "handout" to survive? Lets say for a second that some parents shouldn't have kids because the cant afford it. Do you look at these children and say, because your parents made bad decisions, that that they have to suffer? We have so much wealth in this country but people want to believe that welfare, food stamps, etc are bankrupting it.
We all don't pay taxes. Should net takers vote count the same as someone who works hard and pays taxes and takes care of their business?

Perhaps I used this as an exercise to reinforce why I don't usually comment. I have a well crafted response, but it doesn't matter. You're entrenched, I am entrenched, and perhaps if we had this conversation in person something meaningful would come out of it. I retreat with a final thought from Mr. Jefferson. "I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend."

I love that Jefferson quote and one i've always kept close. Unfortunately i've lost friends who don't feel the same way. Things I generally try to avoid debates on - Religion, guns and abortion.... generally most peoples beliefs on those are stead fast and rock solid and no good will come from that debate.
I was also fired from a job after I spent a year working 70+ hours a week to turn my department around. It was a nice thanks for doing that and FU gift from my company. So for a while I was on unemployment and then turned to side jobs to keep the electricity on and the house note current.
Do I think I should be able to vote while on unemployment. Yes, but it didn't matter to me either since I am not a citizen but instead a resident permanent alien (yeah its a cool card that says that on it). I pay taxes and can get drafted into the US military but can't vote so I am taxation without representation. I now am in a position where I can pay to become a citizen so that will change by 2020 election. I don't think illegal aliens should be able to vote and am against illegal immigration. The reasons I am not as yet a US citizen is long and a story for another day but there were set backs.
My father in law is also on disability. He doesn't have much education to speak of and has always done manual labor jobs (carpenter, machine work, welding etc..) but cannot anymore due to his knees failing him. Do I think that he shouldn't vote? No although with the nonsense he spouts sometimes I wish he wouldn't vote

Only land owners vote?? No not at all. That's an extremely elitist look at things, the majority of people don't own land in the US these days because of a huge discrepancy of what a living wage is these days vs yester-years and what land cost today vs yester-years.
Back when the country was formed if you were a white male you could basically get land for free if you built on it and tended to it.
I know it was said in jest but thought I should add that.
Also to the taxes part..... I do agree kind of agree with that. But like everything brought up there is no solid line or black and white there is grey ground on all issues.
It is funny though that we have a commander in chief who has famously said that not paying taxes makes him smart.

I'm not entrenched. I've changed my mind on alot of these issues as I continue to read and become educated on different points of view.
I listen to conservative radio every single day, and also read liberal blog sites every single day. I want to learn. I want to know why/understand why people are OK with the gov't getting more involved with your life and taking more of your hard earned money. People keep voting for it....and I THINK I know the reason why, but it never hurts to investigate and ask.
What I have noticed from that, and this discussion here, is that legit comments and questions are blown way out of proportion and interpreted as though a 5 year old read it.....then one side just says 'lets agree to disagree' (irrationally entrenched) when they have no educated response. I notice this quite a bit.
These are common themes:
-"we should have some sort of voter criteria/ID".....jumps to whites/racism when no one mentioned race
-claims that we said all on gov't assistance are deadbeats....when no one said that
-doesn't see that being on short term unemployment, that is paid for, is different than WIC and welfare for deadbeats.
-Jumps to the conclusion that without the gov't providing free lunches, kids would be starving in the street
-Won't answer the "how much is enough" tax question. I'm all ears.
-Fails to grasp that HALF the households are on some assistance and is now a perpetual problem and drain.
-Fails to grasp 50% of the working population doesn't pay into the Federal (often State) system yet receives all it's benefits. And they want to talk about fair. Come on now.
-Fails to grasp 2.43 TRILLION dollars has now been claimed as MANDATORY spending, and elected officials vote to increase ever year. This does not include defense. That is unsustainable.
-Jumps to the conclusion that all those who oppose ILLEGAL immigration are racists and 'forgot that we all are children of immigrants'
-'We' provide colleges for them to attend, yet they are so bored with their liberal arts degree that they march, protest, and deface history at the very school they attend, due to ignorance. No one asks them why...only that this country is racist. Of course they aren't ashamed, no one raised them right.
-Some are focused on the first 'type of person' to be elected and get so excited to vote for that person, regardless of the consequences. It does not matter. Should be the best for the job. Shame (and telling of the general population's ignorance) that people get elected because of their color or gender, or even worse, sexual orientation.
-And wake country elected a new sheriff because he campaigned on not alerting the feds of illegal immigrants and 'not tearing families apart'. So we elect a sheriff who openly defies the law and lies to the public. Great. He gonna send the kids to jail with the parents now? What a moron.
