Do you have any good pics of the exhaust routing?
I am assuming it would be stock.

I am not clear on whether the pipe goes over or under the skid plate, and have seen several variations of how it goes over the rear axle and out the side.

Good score and I will be following this thread.

Mine had this cool Toyota license plate on the back that I haven't seen before. Anyone know if is period correct for a '65 or if it was a later Toyota slogan?

The plate and license plate holder were mine. Bought the license plate holder new over forty years ago. Probably 74 or 75. That is the time period for that slogan. Picked up these floor mats in 75.

Btw JP, an f engine will run all day on those numbers, I have had 85psi across the board purr like a kitten! These are low compression engines designed to run on just about anything flammable! Also get her running up to op temp and retest!

I'm def going to retest, borrowing a buddies compression gauge too as mine was having some issues I think. You're definitely right about them running fine at those numbers. My first 40 in college had 110-120 across the board and I ran/wheeled that thing for years. So I know that I could get away with running the engine as is. However since I'm going all out on this old girl trying to make her like new I guess I was looking for an excuse to rebuild her :D

Hey Kevin
The exhaust on there is a replacement but they mirrored the factory layout pretty close I believe. I'm certain the exhaust runs above the skid plate as you can still get the stock down pipe from Toyota and that is how it is bent. This is the best picture I have of the exhaust on mine, only big issue I note is the muffler it's self is a little to far forward it should mirror the angle of the frame.

Awesome John! Thanks so much for the info. on the license plate. I was hoping it was original but it's still pretty cool none the less. Any chance I can get some more detailed pictures of that LPB rear license plate set-up. I'll need to fabricate it as mine was missing. Looks like I could use a 40 rear set-up and just fab. the brackets that hold it to the frame.

I was on Daddy day care duty yesterday but I did manage to get in a few hours today with the sand blaster and got the frame 80% done. I had forgotten how much I dislike sand blasting especially in the 80 degree weather we had today. In the future I think I'll sub out larger items like the frame too many little nooks, crannies, and crevices to try to blast out.

Notice the rear bump stop is stamped with "FJ24" I've seen plenty of early parts stamped with "FJ25" or "BJ25" in their part numbers but never 24 before

Quick google search about the FJ24 revealed this...........

TOO COOL!! Seems my ole 45LPB has some firetruck DNA in it :grinpimp:

Because the factory PTO winch was a option on the FJ45LP-B believe the exhaust ran below the skidplate. Or would have a different part number for the header pipe. I have a 65 FJ45LP-B parts book. It would be listed there. I'll check.

Would have to find it. The main plate is the same as the one used on the FJ40 with a single light. The 70 owner also had a plate with no brackets spot welded on. Not sure what it was for but used it for a license plate on FJ62's ARB Bull Bar.

Remember your dad helping you with a 45LV years ago and was wondering how he was doing.

Here's my FJ45LP-B schematic, I'm still thinking it goes above the skid plate maybe not though. Our old LV had a factory PTO gear box and Ramsey head with the exhaust routed above the skid plate. It was tight but it all fit.

Thanks for asking John, He's doing very well! He just turned '65 and will be retiring soon. He still helps me with my cruiser addiction though his enthusiasm has waned a little over the years. I'm hoping once he retires he'll get back into it more but he'll probably just spend more time fishing :D

I've run exhaust above the skid plate with a PTO in 68 FJ40. Wasn't stock and a tight fit. Bought the stock exhaust for it from Toyota in the early nineties. It ran below the skid plate. Took it off after denting the front edge but still have in my pile of exhaust parts. Have 76 FJ40 with only 4,500 miles on it and still has the stock exhaust. Runs under skid plate and not that tight against it. Never seen a stock exhaust on 45 but can't see it being any different than a 40. It's awful for off-road but that's how they came. If you used it. Off-road at all it would get dented. Think around 72 a heat shield was added to the muffler. Once the exhaust changed in 75 a number of heat shields were added. But none were added above the skid plate. Would think if the exhaust was run above the skid plate there would be a heat shield there as well. I agree it was a stupid way to run which why so many can't except it was how Toyota did it.

Hey JP.....super cool project as usual. I was looking at my bump stops and they are the same as yours(can't see the numbers though)...any idea what rubber to use on them? I was going to modify some FJ40 ones to work but maybe there is a better setup. I can't seem to find a pic of an OEM setup....thanks.

Thanks Chris! The rubber part of the bump stop on 45s mounted on top of the rear axle and was secured with the u-bolts. According to @beno they are still available from Toyota (48306-60010)

Look at the driver's side rear axle you can see it there.

Funny thing is on LV's they ran the muffler on the outboard side of the frame and directly under the drivers seat area with no heat shield, bet that was hot! I trust your superior knowledge on Cruisers John but I still think some possibly came routed above the skid plate from the factory. Not trying to start a exhaust routing war just curious in how Toyota did things. I scanned through some of my early literature this morning and found quite a few that seem to show the exhaust tight up against the frame rail. I'll see if I can get my stock exhaust down pipe from Onur mounted on the LV rolling chassis I have to see it fits above the skid plate, though technically that'd be wrong for an LV as pictured below

John maybe later model 40s ran the exhaust below the skid plate? All my early stuff is above.

This is my 65 SWB and it's definetly stock

This the factory down pipe from Onur it's bent to go above the skid just like the parts book shows.

Wish had more information on the F135 equipped cruisers. Found this in a old Man-A-Fre catalog.

My 76 the day I bought it in 2006 and stuck it in storage.

Very Possible have been run above the skid plate prior to 68. Because of the heat transfer to the oil in the PTO which is very close to the exhaust switched to below the skid plate. The first PTO I installed in my 68 the aluminum case melted from being to close to the aftermarket exhaust. This is why over twenty-five years ago I bought the stock exhaust which ran under the skid plate. I also bought the heat shield for the 72-74 muffler. This was Toyota's first attempt at a heat shield which explains the lack of a heat shield in the four door 45LV.

Also found this in a Man-A-Fre catalog which may or may not be where I bought mine. I remember where I bought the floor mats.

I could not believe that these were still available. And quite readily in fact.

Which model/year is this header pipe for? Would consider for a 65 FJ45LP-B if mine still had the F135 but currently has early to 2F.

Very cool stuff John. I love the old Man-A-Fre catalog stuff. Seeing the license plate there makes sense as my 45LP-B had a bunch of Man-A-Fre receipts from the early 80's included with it.

I can't believe that exhaust on the '76, I guess Toyota wasn't prioritizing ground clearance/offroading at that point

I got the part number from my '65 FJ40 (17401-60040) parts catalog, the LP-B is obviously a different number (17401-60150) since the rear bend is further back.
