Hi folks,
I've asked this question in other threads but looking for a consolidated crowd opinion. What are the criteria you would use to decide to rebuild versus replace your FJ/FJZ80 engine?

@Iceaxe Didn't you just rebuild yours? Or was that just the S/C you added?

Replace with what?

It's a good question. Wouldn't it be less expensive to rebuild it prior to a complete failure??

Called a top quality specialist Cruiser shop and asked them their price for a head gasket job on a 3FE - $4500. Lots of good engines out there for less than that. So if the HG goes, it'll be cheaper to replace with a new/used 3FE, I'm betting. God Knows what they would want to rebuild the engine.

Depends no performance versus diagnosis. I pulled my head due to 2 burned valves. At 197K the cylinder bores were nice and still showed the swirls. No symptoms of low end problems so left that part alone. Already had a spare head that came off a good running engine that had 225K on it. Took it to my machinist, and he said he installed new seals which it did need, and he kissed ground the valves and seats but they really did not need much. He guestamated that other than the worn out seals, it was good for at least another 100K + befor any serious valve wear. Some day I will go thru my original head and maybe do a bit of extra machining on it? So, my diagnosis was a low compression reading in #1 cylinder. I pulled the head hoping that it was a valve issue, not a ring or cylinder bore issue. I am pretty happy with what I found. It runs like a champ now.

When it dies or starts knocking badly I guess. Or if the performance dips into 2F territory

I don't think the shop wanted the business. That's at least $3k more than the highest estimate I've heard of for a 1fz. Is it really all that much more difficult on the 3fe?

I have been wondering the same thing. Blackstone test showed small amount of coolant in the oil. 281k miles. Not sure if it worth pouring money and time into head gasket replacement if the whole engine will need to be rebuilt soon. Curious what others will say.

After some further thought, I'm pretty sure Leeloo knows the answer when to rebuild.

Crash, Boom, Bang!

Close- I bought a rebuilt SC and installed it. Turns out the engine is ruining great. Just need to go through all the cooling mod checklist.

With the head off of my engine, the cylinders looked very good with nice crosshatch, 240,000ish miles. What I don't know is whether the factory pistons have a lot of taper in the skirts. Anyone know how much piston skirt wear is typical at the 200k-plus mark?
