What sort of mods are you doing to a 606 to get this power range? This seems over triple the factory torque specs, right? What ballpark cost are we talking?

No clue.
Diesels are magic. Pour fuel to them, they make more power. That's through injectors and the injection pump.
EGT's too hot? Push more air through with a better turbo. Still too hot, dump water down the hole. Most people dont do water injection, you only really see that on rigs pulling sleds.

Matt has a pump and a turbo. I'd wager he's in the 250hp range the way he pulled on me.

My 01 5.9 pickup, I had nothing but programming, no hard parts, and it was easily double factory output. A 1000ft/lb clutch would chatter if I cranked everything up and had the skidloader and attachments behind me. I put 300k miles on that pickup with very few problems and only related to turning it up. I nuked an injection pump starving it for fuel. Better lift pump, problem solved.
Diesels are fricking magic.

That little 606 is popular everywhere but here. Every time you see a Mercedes 300 serving duty as a taxicab with 800k km's on the dial, it's one of the engines in that 606 family. They're just stupid reliable, overbuilt and under tuned.

That might be a little generous on the TQ numbers. But, I am setting up for 300hp. So I should be close. And this will be with a turbo and injection pump upgrade. Although..... I have learned that the stock injection pump(computer controlled) is capable of supporting 300hp. In a nutshell, the stock 606 with an upgraded computer program and a turbo should do 300hp. In order to get the tq up to 500 at 300hp I am betting it would need the crank out of a OM603 to make it a stroker. (spoiler alert... after I get this dialed in, I will start rounding up parts, with the help of @DirtSniffer )

I agree with @sogncab I was guilty of over looking this motor as well until recently. In my mind, the Mercedes engines were in those boxy cars from the 80's that smoked a lot taking off from stop signs and were going really slow.... lol But, that is not the case with the 90's versions.

I'm hoping to get to SMOOR if its not to late to register and the harvest crew will let me go gotta see where things are landing. Already have permission from the wife. It'd be cool to compare engines.

I hope you can make it!!

I was bummed we didn't get to meet up at SAS!! I too want to check out your rig sir!

In a 40? Yeah. Just off of weight. There's more than enough hp capability there with a 606 to break everything.
No clue what Minnesota Matt's is for power, but he pulled on me hard on the road. I'm kinda hoping he dynos it for fun

5.9 cummins is one of the best engines made, and you have the advantage of having wheelbase, so you have options for tranny and tcase that most don't have.

300hp and 5-600ft/lbs out of a 606 is way more than you'd need off road.

Not gonna lie, it does make me smile when I think about us going to Montrose racing and how fast I was coming up on you. :)

Then I think of how bad it smoked coming down from 13k and I am not smiling anymore... lol But I will get that dialed in this winter...

I still think there is more we can do to address the smoking, but I think the small displacement will still be an issue. I bet it's just not moving enough air mass off boost at elevation, even when dialing back the fueling. 603 stroker build should help with that...

I still want to experiment putting a pressure regulator on the boost line to the alda. Among other things.

You destroyed me. You beat me with the fiat engine too, but not like with the Benz.

If the R2.8 nuked suddenly, that engine would be at the top of my list.
I wish I had known what a following it had, and how easy it was to tinker with. I would've done that long before the commie cummins

I forget you're southern. Our crops are just starting to turn. Only thing that comes out this time of year is sileage.

You should try and make it. There's some challenging terrain there. I'm bringing the 80 due to 2 passengers and a dog.

Us here midwesterners have done made a secret code to talk around them there colorado people.
Ha! There is a spoken language in Colorado that connects most everything to being in the outdoors. S’more here, and I thought everyone else, meant “some more”, indicating that you want another marshmallow, chocolate bar and graham cracker. I’ll have to check out your secret code event.

The way hate on modern diesels. I was really surprised to learn that you had a Commie Cummins under the hood. 🤷‍♂️

Tier 2 emissions versus Tier 4. EGR, but no DPF filter, or def fluid.

I gambled.

Still not my favorite. It's not as good as I hoped it'd be. It's okay, but it's not great.

Shove that engine into a 67' Nova 2 with the right gearing, I bet you could get 30mpg hardly trying.

Now I'm wondering if it would fit in a Fiero...... 🤣
