Has the machine shop already started the head?

Is this going back together smogged or non?

Negative Cameron.

Head will be going to machine shop 2nd week of June. Shop will test for cracks and clean it up nicely. Head will be getting new seats, new valves, springs, seals, keepers, and freeze plugs. Intake/exhaust side will get shaved a bit to true it up as will the bottom of the head.

It is going back together non-smogged (carby and dizzy will be heading up to FJ40Jim).

My summer break starts in a week and I need some practice...

You are welcome to come up and hang for a weekend when I am putting the block together. Probably not till about mid-late July. I need to do the H55F/splitcase combo first and get the flywheel machined.

I know you already have the stock valves to go back in but you might consider doing the head the way Jim does it with the domestic valves. I don't remember the details, I think they are stainless and slightly bigger. They're supposed to be harder to burn up or something, not to mention better breathing.

I got one of his 2F's with his desmogged carb & dizzy. It is a HUGE improvement over stock. If you even come close, you are going to love it.

Correct.

Robbie Antonson out in Boulder also goes in this direction on 2F/3F-E builds. I would have as well if I already hadn't spent gobs of money on procuring all Toyota parts. If the valves were fast movers, I would be tempted to sell them on MUD. But I have committed to this direction, so I'll probably just be happy with the new Toyota valves.

Roger that!

I'll wait until you have the carb and dizzy back before I recommend converting to TBI.

Another great improvement.

But I have committed to this direction, so I'll probably just be happy with the new Toyota valves.

Two different machinist, both familiar with the 2F, both old timers, neither knowing who Jim C was, explained the benefit to the Chebby valves wasn't just about "air flow" or "performance" ( one laughed when I used the term in the same sentence as a 2F ) but that the stem were slightly larger and allowed for correcting worn guides.

For what that's worth....

Yep, i got a Jim job as well with the chebby valves.
I'm amazed everytime i drive the truck how good it runs on regular crapanol.

Seems like the perfect time for a 1HZ conversion. I need to come to the main office in Pittsboro in a few weeks, so that'll give you time for an engine acquisition, then we can start wrenching.

We can bang out the bulk of the conversion in three days, and I could bring out the 62 to just sit there for a reference until you're done. Easy peasy. You just need to find a motor and the bits to connect to a transmission. Exhaust and other stuff is just detail/time.

I mean, if you're talking about going all the way, why are you fxxxing around? Get in the game and give yourself a big grin while driving that thing!

It's not like you have new 1hz short-blocks sitting around your office or anything...

Well, got to get some things rolling on the ole 2F.

Carby and the dizzy have been shipped off to JimC in Ohio with all available OEM Carb gaskets, secondary, float, orings and seals. Hope to have them back in a couple of months. :)

Had the flywheel machined. Wiped it down with some oil and into storage it goes till everything gets back for reassembly.

My friend's Steve and Bryan came over and assisted a bit in tearing it all apart. Thanks for the help guys!

Nice going. I can't wait until it goes back together.

Here's a close look at #4 and #5 pistons. These things were trashed. Not sure why these two ended up this way and the rest of the pistons were in very good shape. The cylinder walls showed some wear at #4 and #5 but did not seem at all reflective of the damage these pistons incurred. Weird.

The cons were fine and the crankshaft looks fine visually. Bearings all looked reasonable as well. The camshaft bearings were fine except for the #4 bearing which looked pretty work and had worked itself into the cam as well. That said, not too worried as I am installing a new cam and, obviously, new bearings.

Dude - if we don't see one of these puppies hanging off the back of your shiny new H55, I will personally revoke your "Parts Guy" card :D
