What the hell is goin on in Jimmy's Barn (3 Viewers)

Long time no update here. Been focused on the copper 60 build I’m doing for my boys mother in CO. Getting close on that one. A separate build thread documenting that one. Reminder to put it in my signature. So I get asked from time to time to do some work on other folks cruisers and actually have a little more time on my hands at the moment. So I took on a 5-speed conversion a few weeks ago. A really good guy out of Hico TX owns the truck. He’s plenty capable to do the work but has a pretty demanding day job with a lot of travel. Some other things happening are a Knucke job, oil pan gasket and rear main seal. A handful of other smaller jobs. Enjoying mixing up the activities in the barn. One of the interesting issues I’m facing that I have not seen before would be the shipping delays on the many items I sourced from Toyota. Anyhow, things are moving. Also told the owner that another issue I have is I can typically only charge folks once for a job. Dam if they don’t become good friends and then I can’t charge them anymore :).

This truck is an 84 and we are keeping the original bellhousing and crossmember. Will heat/bend the shifter to account for the more upright housing/trans. Something I thought about is seeing if the shifter from my BJ60 has a different bend. It has the more upright trans and older style cross member. Just a thought but not sure until I have a closer look.

That's a sexy puller....

That's a sexy puller....
Ha. That puller works Nik. Can’t tell you what a bitch it was getting the bearing out of the output drive shaft on the first t-case I did. My son pointed me to this tool and I’ve never looked back. Also the same reason I’ve never done the bread trick on pilot bearings. Some tools do not get loaned out. This is one of them :).

So I have been doing work on cruisers other than mine so I guess an update is due. In late December I took on a H55 conversion, T-case rebuild, RMS, oil pan, knuckles, brakes etc. was a great job and really good cruiser dude out of Hico. Been friends with his brother for years so the recommendation was worthy. No surprises other that 2 pistons on the rt caliper being frozen. All new brakes cured that. Here’s some pics from Christopher’s 84.

What calipers did you go with when you replaced them?

Finishing up another friends truck from just south of me. It’s a really nice 86 model with a H55 in it. Needed a knuckle job,

RMS and oil pan gasket. He mentioned the steering was a bit wonky as of late. Quick look once on the lift and new bushings were on order. Never seen these things deteriorate like this.

So I ordered these from Oriellys. Typically do Caliper and rotors from them or Napa. If someone wants Toyota I get a decent discount there but have actually never priced them before.

There's been a history of older OME bushings deteriorating like this. Posts on this maybe 10+ years ago. I have a friend that installed a new OME on a FJ40 frame about 15 years ago, that's how it is still sitting, and the bushings have crumbled even with no use. Maybe OME has improved but after my first experience with this I began using Energy Suspension bushings.

Great feedback and recommendations. I do know this is a 10+ year old system that sat idle for many years prior to my friend buying the truck.

One of the reasons I decided to go with OE or similar rubber bushing on my FJ40. I've heard/read more negatives than positives about poly bushings in general. We shall see how the rubber does. I’m fairly certain it still had the original bushings. Most were destroyed but some were still partially there after almost 60 years.

Same thing happened to my 60 a few years back

Poly bushings suck, just like that lifestyle. It first looks pretty and sexy at first, but it all falls apart soon after.😏

It’s not a cruiser, but a an 02 Tundra with 48k on the odometer showed up yesterday. Going to do a timing belt and a few other baselining things for him. Thank you for the recommendation Jack Horton. Drawing a blank on your MUD handle.

Ha. The engine bay is pristine. I’ll post some pics when I get into it.
