What is the difference in early FJ55s vs. the later years ?

What about front fenders? Are they all the same?

The front blinker lights on the 68/69 are mounted on the side, where as the other years are mounted on top of the fender. They also have reflectors mounted low on the fender.

But other than the cosmetic differences, they still all fit all years?

When I see a Pig, I look for the rear side vents - they started in 9/72 and went to the end.

Vent windows - aka "Bug Catchers" went away in 9/73, so very few Pigs have both the vent windows and rear quarter vents.

Other things to look for - the hood. The "Big Bump" hood came w/ the 2F, so that was mid-'75 I think? That hood ran through the end. The flatter hood with the 2 slight raises (reminds me of the 200-series hoods) was from the beginning until the Big Bump hood.

Front turn signals changed from small and sleek to big and bulky with the Big Bump hood. The earliest Pigs had side apron mount turn signals - very rare.

On the front fenders, you could have a side marker light through '74, not sure if they were on the very earliest Pigs? The emblems on the front fenders changed as well - early Pigs had 2 separate emblems: one Toyota, second emblem was Land Cruiser. I think the switch was 9/73 when they dumped the vent windows. Then the later fender emblems were 1 piece "Toyota Land Cruiser".

Dash changed in 9/72.

Tailgates - most have recessed area between tail lights with raised lettering "Toyota". I think when they went to the long, tall tail lights for '78 and later, they got rid of that recessed area. Those '78+ tail lights are more difficult to find. Most tailgates had a 4WD emblem that looks like the number 4. I have seen the 4 painted w/ black paint, orange paint and white paint.

Front grilles - early Pigs (production is usually listed as starting in late '67) had the marker lights in the grille, under where the headlight would be. Then they deleted the marker light and replaced with a plastic rib piece. '79 and up Pigs had different grilles in that the material around the word "Toyota" was cut out. Not sure if this was a move to help cooling with emissions/smog equipment and A/C?

Pig production is said to have ceased in 8/80. I think the last production date I have ever seen on a Pig was July of '80. I think it was @FirstPig or @Finalpig who had it, in Australia?

It is @Finalpig who has it, a July '80 Pig: New Piglet - last pig ever made This one was from AUS, so it has front drum brakes, and ambi doors. We never got ambi doors in the States.

He also at one time had the oldest known Pig, chassis number 31, first purchased 26 Nov, '67. He was trying to sell it at one time: fj5531 and For Sale - World oldest FJ55 chassis number 31

Pablo,

Good write up. Some of that gets very confusing. Anybody know when they went from 3 speed on the column, then to the floor, then to the four speed? 71 was on the column, but wasn't 72 on the floor.

Very Good Information !

My 72 is 3 Speed (Floor)

I bought a 1972 pig in 1973. It had 3,200 miles on it and the plastic protection still on the door panels. I think it was a March production. 3 speed on the floor, transfer on the floor, no smog per say, no head rests, ball joint antenna on the right fender, no AC, triangle windows on front doors, non retractable seat belts with an optional attachable shoulder strap ( light grey) and no seat belt warning light, no rear vent, yellow cast type bottle jack that I still have (it's in my 77).

Homemade roof rock and home grown heavy duty bumper (bicycle deflector). Curtains all the way round. Platform inside with drawer underneath. Have pics I will try to load.

Drove it to near death, restored it and drove it till the roof rusted off. It was my daily driver, work truck (construction), party taxi, RV, 4wheeler, airplane, helicopter, submarine and sexmobile.

Man I miss those days.

Sorry for getting off track. The memories got the better of me.:deadhorse:

That's what it's all about, good story. Come prepared for some more when we're sitting around the fire at the Pig Fest! :)

don't forget the early steering wheels!

Did the "early" stuff get phased in during 1969? I have 2 69's out back for parts. One has the regular steering wheel, front turn signals, and I think the regular grille. The other one I Just picked up yesterday (long story, will start a thread soon) has the side marker lights on the bib like in the pic above. Well, the hole is there, no lights unfortunately. It also has the early steering wheel.

Wow, Sounds very much like my rig which remains remarkably original.

3 Speed on the floor

TXFER case on the floor

Only has an EVAP canister (non smog)

No head rests but the original seat covers have a place for them (10" apart). The inner headrest hole is open and the other has a block off plug.

Ball Joint Antenna on passenger side.

No AC (I removed an after market - roof mounted AC that previous owner installed in the 80's) Need to fill holes in roof.

Fixed triangle window in front doors

Ash tray in each door panel.

Non-retractible seats belts (WITH) shoulder strap (All Still there)
-----> Couple of seat belts missing the Toyota emblem.

No seatbelt warning light or rear vent.

---> Engine Crank Rod under back seat with correct crank pulley that actually accepts it.

Thanks for the memories !
Our trucks sound very similar.
