What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week? (25 Viewers)

First post, may as well start here as an introduction. I have a 74 FJ40 I bought in the mid 80s. Drove it as my primary transport through college. Job commute pushed me to something more practical and it has sat for 15 years at least, occasional starts to see if it would still go.
Last week, my son said "dad, we should see if we can get the old cruiser running". New plugs, oil, battery, brake fluid in the master and clutch reservoirs and some gas and it fired up. I was shocked, the kid was ecstatic. As it ran we discovered that the water pump leaked, the lights don't work, brakes are sketchy at best, and I have to pump the clutch several times to get it to work.
Looks like a project...I have been looking over some of the stuff in these forums and I hope as I try to do to this, that I can throw questions out there and tap into some of the expertise.

You should start your own thread with this info, as it will get buried here.

Stripped a rear axle assembly to begin building. Can't find the axle bearing adapter for the slidehammer to get the last bearings out of the now naked housing. Tomorrow AM I'll use a long piece of rod to drive each bearing out from the opposite side. Then the housing can be blasted & primed.

Thanks man, It was that or black, I put the tires and stuff on and took her for a ride. Nice to be back in the saddle.

Hi Moe, can you please PM me the code for your color ?

we shook a whole lotta rust off the DSRTRDR

watch out for the thread soon to appear in the 40s forum

Got a bit eBay crazy while surfing from my wife's hospital room and ended up buying 2 rear steps. One freshly powdercoated and the other a survivor that is in 95% condition and probably one of the straightest examples I've seen. Why is this hobby so addicting? I'll have to update with pics of them installed.

just admit to the problem and go on with life :meh:

The first thing I did this week was fab up a lock for the hood so I can at least keep honest people from doing what dishonest people do under hoods. Pics of the front posted as whats inside is "inside". Second thing I did was met with a local that is parting out his 60 and bought a Tuffy console from him to use in mine once I get to actually "use" it.
I know the colors on the seats and console don't match. That may change as he had a set of seats that I may have to go back and buy if we can work out the numbers on em. Only time will tell.

started tearing into it

Valve adjustment and compression test. Internals look good....yippee

Finally took the hard top off for the summer; usually do it much sooner.

Liquid Wrench, PB Blaster or some other penetrating lubricant

And chase all the threads with a tap and some lubricant before you put the top back on.

I started but I have frozen bolts.

The bolts will break. They are easy to get to to remove once the top is off. C'mon Monnie, take yer top off already.......:hillbilly:

Lubed my steering linkage, raised the radiator 1" (sbc - the steering shaft was rubbing), flushed, refilled, and adjusted the saginaw power steering. Along with new TRE's 6 months ago, my truck is one-finger smooth lock to lock, and will drive in a straight line!

Recycled some of it for use as a hood in my shop.
