Spent much of Saturday polishing, then waxing this single stage original paint (meguilars product). Have been meaning to do this on my tub since I bought it. Then a Sunday am car gathering where the owner of this beautiful 66 912 and I talked about the many attributes of single stage paint. That slate gray may be my favorite color of all time

Interesting.

What did you do to remedy?
Put in a good running 84 2F. I’m thinking maybe a bad brake booster caused it to run lean but don’t know. You are the only other one that I’ve seen like that

I am on my second 40, the first one had a SBC, this one has a proper 2F of which I love!
I did my first engine oil change on the 2F yesterday and was surprised to see the huge size of the drain plug. I had just drove the 40 long enough to heat the oil up then pulled the plug and never gave it thought as to how fast the oil was going to come out with that big of a hole plus the oil being thinner because it was warm.......what a mess I made all over the floor! My standard waste oil drain pan was not nearly adequate!
I'll try a bucket next time!!

Me too. It's going to be a 700 mile round trip!
That's impressive! Showing your dedication to proper care and supporting one of the best Cruiser suppliers in the country!

I've been running a qjet for 30+yrs and have no reason to change. I've laid my other 40 on its side a couple of times and I'd have to turn the engine off. If the nose of the 40 is drastically pointing down, like coming off a ledge it'll idle ruff. I might have to feather the throttle a little. I have have couple of minimal tweaks that I do to them for offroad. I'm still learning to fine tune for better economy and performance. In the past I'd go to an a/p store and buy one for a certain application and they work great out of the box and are inexpensive. I've found with those type carbs, the internals are very generic and designed to work on several applications. It's difficult to id the internal parts because they're not marked(jets & rods), so it's hard to really fine tune them. Anytime I see a qjet for free or real cheap I'll pic it up for parts or possible rebuild. I recently found an unmolested stk carb I'll be building. I'll baseline it and then play with it. I always keep a rebuild kit handy.
Buy the Quadrajet book by Cliff Ruggles. Well worth it to dial these carbs in. They will out perform anything but a well tuned FI system. The only problem with the much-maligned Q-Jet is always the last guy who worked on it.

I'll be ordering the book soon, just for a little more detail and direction. I'll certainly be a customer for his parts. I'm not ready to build my stk qjet yet. I have few more projects to start or finish b4 I get to the carb.
I don't necessarily agree with the FI comment. Some FI systems have some restrictive aspects to fuel delivery that carbs don't have. Also if there's a problem with my carb, I can usually fix it on the spot. I've witness a lot of folks have to cut their wheeling trip short because of FI related issues. FI has always been on the list, but it is constantly getting shoved further down the list. I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze.

Yeah... I was oversimplifying. My point is that the Q-Jet adjusts for far more driving conditions than a comparable Holley or Edlebrock (Carter). It's more similar to an FI system than either of those other carburetors while delivering better fuel economy and response.
