Chipping away at the tune up and missing pieces- runs like a well tuned sewing machine- and sounds like it with the exhaust leaks fixed, also prepping the trailer for camping duties.

Tried to get the fuel gauge working only to find the cluster is barrel plug newer style and not compatible or correct for this 1970.

Who knows. But I am going to steal the radiator and shroud from my 1969 project- as the radiator overflow nipple is broken off and it's leaking across the inner top seam. I'll replace the 1969 later- 4bt in that one.

Bought a red head steering box. Realized my dad's scab plate he made fit some other steering box, rather than the one everyone uses on FJ40s. Ordered a 4x4 labs saginaw steering box kit. Asked an expert welder friend to come over and stack some dimes. Thought it'd be a hour or two. Nope, 6 hours later, we thought we were done. Forgot 1 plate. I proved the welding is a skill that takes time to master and bird sh*t sculptured are easy to make. I even welded the plate on before welding the tee nuts got the toe hooks...man I'm awesome!

We did manage to keep the original hole location for the bumper by graphing the c channel on to the 4x4 labs outside bracket.

I put off getting the door glass in the LV for quite awhile. The channel, side wiper/fuzzies are not available for it, so I had to find products that would work. Once I got those like I wanted, it was time to put the glass in and make them roll up and down. Success! I have four operable windows that don't rattle and do not leak water, or whistle driving down the road.

Once those were done, I decided to tackle the Wing windows. The gaskets were a pain, but I got em. Then I had to strip down the wings themselves. I drove the pins out of the latch mechanisms and went for it. I was torn about color. Spring Green?...Off-White? I decided on GM Argent Silver (which I already had in a can of Dupont Centari). Sanded, masked, primed and painted... Then, installed:

I'm really happy with the results. Next up, the seats go in for upholstery next Wednesday.

This weekend: worked on moving and mounting the driver's seat and replacing weather stripping. Lift gate done=will finish passenger door, bolt down seat and start on driver's door. Wish I knew what adhesive the PO used. After vseat is in, console goes and new ignition switch. Then radiator flush and new tires.

Correcting the PO's lack of maintenance. Right off the heads of both t-stat housing bolts snapped. I was able to remove the remainder of the bolts without any trouble but that was after a lot of heat and penetrant to pop the housing top off. Not shown, liberal application of anti-seize.

The next logical step was to throw it into low-low and see what it was capable of. The current crawl ratio is 156:1. The engine will overrun the brakes.

Did my first rebuild of a full float hub. Years ago I bought a fully floating rear axle for my 75 FJ40 - the axle was from an FJ45 I assume. The 40 recently started locking one rear wheel under light braking which is real fun in the wet Turns out one of the brakes was full of a grease / diff oil concoction. Bought this kit which seemed to have everything needed: Rear Axle Hub Rebuild suits Landcruiser 40 60 70 Series Wheel Bearings, Studs Seals, Lock Nut + Washer | ZPN-03871 - https://www.onlineautoparts.com.au/products/Rear-Axle-Hub-Rebuild-suits-Landcruiser-40-60-70-Series-Wheel-Bearings-Studs-Seals-Lock-Nut-Washer/ZPN-03871

I froze the new bearing races, dowel pins and wheel studs.

Notes: installing wheel studs without a vice or a rattle gun is hard. Ended up drilling out some 100x50 timber in the same pattern as the axle studs to use as a lever. And I had to butcher my 54mm socket in lieu of the three-pronged SST 09509·25011.

Will test drive tomorrow, hopefully I get home with all 4 wheels still attached

On Thursday Amaya's Collision Center finished up the bib and aprons. After I realized that I don't have the skills or equipment to weld body panels, or even paint decently, I started taking some parts to them. They do excellent work that I could only aspire to. Anyway, so those were the last 2 pieces that I needed to drive it to town for an inspection, so I took off Friday and got them installed!

Friday I received my awesome new battery cables in the mail from @Fourrunner so those got installed Saturday Thank you sir, they are superb! I also installed the new fusible link from @Coolerman which is also top quality! Thank you!

So here we are. I drove it to work this morning. I've done it; completed my goal to get it street legal. Now I think I will just drive it and give my wallet a break... oh except for brakes... and tie rod ends... and maybe I'll get new bushwacker flares, that passenger one being broken stands out to me now that my 40 is going places... Yeah, a break LOL

Is that licence plate bracket in the correct place? I ask because I am about to mount one and thought it went on the inner 2 of the 3 holes in the background of your pic - sort of in front of the right wheel...

I'm not 100% sure, I chose those 2 holes because it matched up with the bracket and has the plate facing perfectly flat forward. The 2 holes in front of the right wheel will cause the plate to be angled toward the center. Now, if I ever get a winch I may have to move it, because it seems like it will be in the way. I'd like to hear what other people have done, anyone feel free to chime in and show where you mounted the front oem license bracket on the oem bumper, or maybe some old school pics of how it came from Mr. T.

I don't really thinks it matters except to a purist. I put mine on the left (passenger side) because I installed fog lights and Hi Lift mounts. It sort of "balanced" better (?).

I looked through about 30 pages of the "Back in the Day" thread and I see it done both ways, and everything in between. There were some brochures and factory pics that corroborate the location I chose on posts 908, 802, 765, 748, and 730... but ultimately you are right, only important to purists or vehicles going across Barrett Jackson I suppose LOL. If it gets in the way of things in the future I will move it. For now it is okay. And on a related note, I got my registration at lunch, I'm 100% legal now!! The Classic plates will be coming in the mail soon.

I was gonna get "Collector Vehicle" plates but here in Washington, that limits how much you can drive it as does Hagerty (Insurance). I'm gonna use it for a daily driver now that I am retired and the wife will in a few months, so we bought her a nearly new 4Runner, traded her Xterra and selling my Frontier.
