Fired Her Up!!!
Then got depressed when she stopped running... I need to re-clean my carburetor (again). Gas was leaking out of my plunger :bang:.
So i shifted gears and worked on my roll cage some more.
Once my roll cage is primed and painted I will post pics. LOVE THAT FJ40 PORN!

sort of done to my landcruiser.... my 9 year old and i started to tear into my old chevelle engine to rebuild it for a replacement for a tired unknown 350 currently in the 40 we bought this summer.

good way to teach him how an engine works!

I arrived to work yesterday morning to a racket coming from the engine bay, My first thought was that one of my valve jam nuts had come loose from my recent valve adjustment. On closer inspection and modified stethoscope, I pin pointed the strange (marbles in a can) noise to the air pump.

I took apart the OEM smog pump in hopes of rebuilding her only to find the shaft was worn where the vain bearing ride. I also found the Pulley end bearing FUBAR. I decided to just replace it with a A-1 Cardone P/N 33768 ($210.00 with core).

The pulley end bearing was f****d up. I'm really surprised the pump didn't seize up.

Pressing out the vain body.

Shortly after this I measured the vain shaft and realized how bad it was worn, I decided to cut my losses. Sometimes it cheaper to just buy a reman.

The new smog pump installed, I also replaced both belts at this point. The engine purrs again.

Finally got the apron emblems installed, I’ve been working on the bones of this thing so long I haven’t worried about some little things like these.

Also got a few deliveries.

Rear hatch weatherstripping, cowl drain tubes, emblems, some grommets, all from City Racer

Clutch master and slave I picked up from Rock Auto.

Windshield installed today. Wiper motors and arms fitted (but not wired yet). Inside mirror refitted. Winch reinstalled. Then I finally fitted the top!! (No grommets or holes for twist-locks yet.) Starting to install the spare carrier (not shown yet).

Really pleased so far.

@Jdc1 that 40 is going to be a step above and beyond most other 40's around! You'll need to buy an old beater one just to drive around.

Thanks, Ryan. Don't worry, there are a few hanging around that will get their intended use. Im trying to get the 72 finished and out of my garage so I can pull a 68 wheeler in to build.

Ryan makes a good point, built too nice and they go get groceries or car shows. Mine gets light duty off road, no rock crawling and no pinstriping. Good paint is spendy

I would agree with this. Wish I had more time driving and less time building on our 72. It will however be a really nice pavement queen.

This conversation is one I've had with myself countless times. I set out to build a nice driver that I wouldn't be too worried about scratching on some mild/moderate trails. Even after just the mechanical work I've put in so far, I find myself worrying about "hurting" it. Now I'm getting into the bodywork part... I'll probably paint this in my driveway just so it doesn't end up too pretty!

I had to remind myself a few times that I was building something to run down rough roads, something that if I scratched it wouldn't be heartbreaking. It stays covered in dirt, full of dust in the back area, fishing gear, beer caps, and maps, all strewn about.

you should send it out to me to store for you in my garage, we don't want that Ohio rustbelt air to ruin it!

It will likely spend its annual 6 months of downtime in one of these:
