x2, glad you all made it out okay. And on a positive note the Cruiser is salvable. I've seen engine fires get out of hand fast.

We were heading up to the mountains, and the engine started rattling loudly. I was looking for a spot to pull over, and it just shut off... coasting down the hill I heard the distinct sound of... fire.

@hairy_apple - Sorry to hear man - always like seeing the recounts of your journeys, sucks to hear that your truck rejected it's chevy engine. What are your plans to get it back on the road? Glad to hear you have a backup pig.
Well.. I'm not sure. I'm so broke right now it's not even funny... so nothing in the short term sadly. I have been putting together a 2FE for it for the last year or so... I was aiming to save some money up over the summer and start it in the winter. Now I'm just going to do the same, but not have the cruiser to enjoy until I'm ready to start. Right now, I'm realistically thinking the 40 will be down for quite a long time. Which sucks bad, I had it dialed in lately and was really happy with how everything was working. OH well.. at least when I'm done it will have a Toyota drivetrain again more then likely.

Ok, on a lighter note:
- I finally got around to installing my new Howell EFI harness on my SBC TBI (it's been sitting in a box for 3 years). And I got rid of the POS harness that I created when I first put the rig together about 9 years ago. MUCH nicer to look at!
- Cleaned up a bunch of unsightly electrical wiring that has been bugging me, and added a new fuse block for the additional circuits.
- I put my brand new fuel tank in with the new in-tank electric fuel pump (I have a build thread floating around here somewhere) and re-plumbed the fuel lines with steel braided hose and AN fittings.
- Pulled the Orion off and fixed an annoying leak at the t-case adapter plate.
- Rebuilt the TBI including new injectors.
We'll get that class going soon, Erik! I'm really excited to see the club's enthusiasm with getting their HAM licenses.
@hairy_apple man, that stinks! Sorry to see the trouble with such a beautiful car, but very happy that nobody was injured!

Noooooooo!!!!! I've been loving the pics of your adventures in the 40. This is a huge bummer. On the upside it looks like a little clean-up and then that Toyota motor swap will be all it takes. Glad you, the wife, and dog are all okay. Good on ya for having the fire extinguisher.

New shoes and socks - I went with new 15" wheels and 31x10.50x15LT BFG KM2's...
The wheels weren't supposed to be here for 6 more weeks... but, they arrived in time for me to drive down (sans AC), in 109* heat... I had to make a rest stop on the way home and parked in this garage. Now, 44 is in my garage and the door is blocked by our travel trailer (preparing to leave), so these are the only pics I have... this may be the last time they are black...

You should have titled the photo 'Do these tires make my cruiser look fat?' I don't think I've ever seen a set of 31s fill in a rig like that.
Before I ask you how they ride, what width are the rims, and what tire pressure? Without specs, the opinion is too subjective.
Rims are 15x8 3.50" backspace... dealer set tire pressure at 35psi... I haven't done anything except drive her home.
They ride very well... they may be (and probably are) a little louder than the MasterCraft Courser ATXs that came with 44... but, loud is quiet in a wind tunnel...
I felt like 44 drifted a bit more, one side, then the other, coming home... but, CC215 (loop) is grooved and she always gets pulled by the grooves... I'll need to drive her more to see... I may need to tweak the toe-in a bit, 'cuz the stance is different (wider).
I learned a valuable lesson while buying these tires... the MasterCrafts are 30x9.50x15LT... I upsized to 31x10.50x15LT... when I was initially planning the purchase, I thought I had plenty of room to go to 33x10.50x15LT.
Luckily, I measured thrice... the third time, with no assumptions... turned out the 30s only measured 28"... so upsizing to 33s would have been FIVE inches, not THREE inches... so, I went with the 31s and they fit... on 44 and in the garage... whew!!
We're leaving, in the morning, for a week in the trailer at 9200', in Utah... so, 44 will be sitting pretty in the meantime.
So, tell me what you think... what you really, really think...

At the risk of sounding like a salesman, I really think you should buy some of my bump stop entenders to save your sheetmetal from getting smacked by those meats.
As far as the tire wander, the wider tires magnify anything that is out of whack, as well as magnifying things that are external to the vehicle. Toe in will only go so far if the axle itself hasn't been fully serviced in a while.
I like 15x8 wheels...for a 12.5" wide tire. I Routinely air down to 12, sometimes less with that much difference between wheel width and tire width. When I ran 15x10s with the 12.5, the comfort zone wasn't there.
IOW, I would have chosen a 15x7 with a 10.5.
