On my FJ40, the GM alternator went out on the way home last week (thanks to CSC brother LCP for the roadside assistance!).

Once we got it to the shop, we pulled it off to replace it.....and like the Fix song from the 80's "One thing leads to another" happened.

Once the alternator was out of the way, I noticed the front of the intake manifold on the 1991 5.7 L98 had a crusty buildup from a coolant leak - But hey, while the manifold is off lets send those injectors out to get cleaned and balanced. Good thing I did, all needed cleaned and balanced, four injectors actually need replaced. also found the coil and cap with burnmarks, so update the ignition coil, cap, rotor, & wires. Tstat and gasket ,some vacuum lines, battery terminal, add a couple additional ground straps, and a rear manifold heater hose (don't need a PHH-type situation on the trail!). Topped off the R12 ac for max coldness .

Just normal age related wear and tear stuff and preventative maintenance but I will feel a lot better on the trail this weekend knowing everything is in good shape! Seat of the pants difference for sure. Had no clue several of the injectors were bad. Drives more refined and better idle and acceleration.

Unless you may enjoy a nasty ringing in the ears later in life - use hearing protection . Grinders seem to have the perfect frequency for causing damage and that ringing all the time will drive a person nuts .
Please report back on the results of the primer and what you used exactly on the galvanized frame - very curious how it comes out .

Drove just shy of 1k miles over the weekend to see the blue ridge parkway and do some camping.

Posted on your thread. Didn't see this at that time, but pic number three made me look again. The hill in the right middle sure makes me think of Jumpoff Joe east of Sweet Home, just before you get to Tombstone Summit on hy 20. The rock face is similar to Jumpoff Joe.

I think the rain will be light. Go for it!
I just wanted you to be aware. :steer: :steer: :steer:

Well, Dave... we went out there and right away, I knew it was gonna be a waste of time... heading north up US95, out of Vegas, I could never get above 48mph... its an incline, but the headwind was vicious!! We stopped in front of the Visitor Center and signed the log book (date and destination) and aired down and started up Morman Well Road. Within a few minutes, we reached 4600' and the rain and snow started blowing horizontally. We sat for a bit and watched it get worse and then drove back down the hill and it followed us the whole way... so I discussed it with daBoise and we agreed to return home and start over in the morning... it only takes about 45 minutes to get home... including airing back up... especially with this tail wind!!

I'm sure it was better that watching TV

Well Dave...

It's pretty out here today... Maybe the wind will die down... Before the rain returns on Thursday...

Chester and I pitched our tent and almost went airborne ... Coulda flown over Vegas in a matter of minutes!!

But, we drove about 30 miles, found a spot that can see downtown Vegas (3900'), got set up, discovered we have cell service and even hiked a few miles as well.

You need to see if your iPhone can get some shots of the night sky.

I'm gonna... I have my camera, just couldn't post pics directly from it.

I'm also gonna see how downtown Vegas looks from here at night.

I completed the tear down of my 45 last night. Now the real work begins.
