Finished up my group 31 battery mod.
I picked up a standard tray from McMaster-Carr and bolted it down to the fender well then I had a friend machine a hold down clamp for me. I powder coated it and have put a 1/32 strip of 80A high strength rubber under the bracket for a nice snug fit.

For the military battery clamp I bought a 3” X 3” inch piece of .125 thick tin flashed buss bar and machined it so I could bend it and have it bolted through the 3/8” bolt on both sides of the clamp. That was my second piece I bought so if any one needs a 1” wide by 12” long X .187 thick buss bar let me know.

Ken

Nice!

What was your final review of the MTR's that you have been running for a while?

Why did you go with the Toyo's this time around?

Thanks

Ordered stuff to do an oil and oil filter change, wipers all around, top off coolant, top off brake fluid, top off washer fluid....replace hood struts as well...plus I am going to get another oil analysis done...been couple years to see how my interval is for fluid changes. More detail in my build thread on Friday.

I'm on my, effectively, 3rd set of MT/R Kevlars and within those it includes 4 warranty replacements due to sidewall cuts (3) and one tread cut. One of the sidewall problems was clearly my fault...ran into a huge rock late in the day. Probably any tire would have been damaged.

But I've also had balancing issues with 2 and although Discount Tire was super and warranty replaced them Goodyear is now, once again , on nation wide backorder with zero ETA. Coupled with the fact their new MSRP is creeping right up on $500 each with no QC improvement and the fact Toyo wants to play ball so to speak it was an easy decision.

I also ran two full sets of Toyo Open Country AT (the original version) and they proved incredibly durable but could never get more than about 20,000 miles out of them from a treadwear perspective. If these new Toyo AT2 tires live up to what Toyo has been bragging about (50,000 mile tread wear guarantee on the 285/75R18) it will surely force the other tire companies, Goodyear included, to wake up. Proof will be on the proving grounds though ;)...more to follow once I get some dirt time with them.

To be fair I absolutely love the MT/R Kevlar tread design, for how and where I travel along with the conditions I see. I just wish Goodyear could act like they have competition and address their carcass/sidewall/rubber formula/strength/QC issues!

The cummins forum i used to read religiously had many folks that swore by the toyos. FYI all dodge diesels seem to have some sort of walk side to side on the highway and these seemed to combat the problem better than any other tire and had good tread life to boot. Of course these were all E rated 10 ply tires.

Like me, they all hated the 285 BFG AT due to the tread slingin SB2 gravel like a machine gun.

I have had my Nitto Trail Grapplers on my vehicle going on their 3rd year....and have about 30,000 miles on them with about 40% tread remaining. I do a 5 tire rotation every 4k miles so that helps but they are wearing outstandingly for a mud terrain and not getting obnoxiously loud either.

I wore Nitto Terra Grapplers on my Dodge 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel and my FJC and loved them as well....

Is that what was recommended with 200K? I would think that with that many miles and a DD that you would end up buying new and rebuilding the old ones for trail spares. Guess you don't know if they are original or if they have been replaced at some point....

Not sure what Toyota recommends. I tend to think alot of maintenance done as a result of this site is for one of 2 purposes:
1. you are going WAY out away from civilized world and need ultra reliability or
2. you drank the preventive maintenance cool aid and throw money at anything that isn't "new"

I'm of the mind set to fix what breaks.

My cvs were fine until lifted, they now leak a little and, despite clamps, are oozing so a reboot kit with fresh grease should do the trick. I noticed I had a worn out tie rod end so am doing those too.

if it becomes obvious that the cvs are in disrepair or need xyz then ill deal with that once it's torn apart. I think my cvs are Toyota as they are very quiet. I would definitely go with Toyota parts from Lowe's since it's a DD and so many have had issues with Napa brand making noise.

My D light likes 146k. It was never burned out after all.

I am not sure what Mr. T would recommend especially not knowing the history of your truck. I don't want to needlessly throw money at the truck just because something doesn't look brand new. You can waste lots of funds that way.

I also am one that doesn't want to fix something till it breaks, but being out on a trail or miles and miles from civilization and having a CV break that needs to either be replaced or removing the DS so you can hopefully drive it home in 2WD isn't an option I want to pursue either...I was just curious why you decided to just reboot and regrease as opposed to replacing without knowing more considering this is going to be your DD.

totally agree. Well we may end up doing more once it's pulled apart but at a miniumum for now I know it needs to have a new reboot kit as they are torn and leaking.

Question for the board: how do cvs wear? as long as they have grease wouldn't they be fine? My truck has 200k and is a pavement pounder all it's life. I assume the CVs are orginal. CVs only become an issue bc we use our trucks off road (dirt, water crossings), put bigger tires, and mainly bc we increase the CV angle.

thoughts?

edit -- oh yeah...whathave I done to my truck this week? ordered parts and dropped it at the shop.

I re-booted mine after I bought it at about 175kmi. I was in total awe, all the innards looked new with zero detectable wear. These looked to have been leaking for a long time too, had to have been original.

I expect to break one on the trail doing something stupid one day but I don't expect to ever wear one out based on what I've seen so far.

This week: she has been resting comfortably in the garage with new lift struts and drivers mirror.

GREAT to hear and an example of why I didn't order new cvs to the tune of $800 or more when mine may be perfectly fine.....crossing my fingers.

Driver's Mirror? what's the story there?

That stinks....glad it wasnt to expensive.

so my CVs are in great shape....just got to watch the reboot to make sure they don't leak anymore. ill take a $60 fix over an $800 one anyday!

added hand throttle

I recieved a hand throttle from the 105 series 'siberian' model and installed it last night. i ordered this from Akella (yan) and he had it to my door within 24 hours. nice! I had to take the lower bezel out and do some hole cutting and trimming to pass the throttle cable through the metal brace behind the bezel.. also trimmed the gas pedal counter weight off to fit the bracket. essentially just followed Shane's (VidereStudios) install thread.. great job writing/taking photos; i had this done in an hour.

the throttle control knob is super smooth and easy to regulate rpm's.. cool, cheap mod that will help come spring when camping/wheeling again.

Post pics please of your location using your factory bezel. Any issue with your knees?

As I'm the one who found out that the later bezels don't fit and it drives me crazy and pisses me off to think I have to buy another bezel.

Installed my Warn VR 10k winch with synthetic line.
