Drove the 80 up to the cottage for the first trip of the year - knew there would will be a bunch of snow on the road (non- plowed private road) but figured the 80 should be able to handle it. I've driven the 70 part way in before and figured the 80 should be able to handle it. The trick is, that the drive in is mostly down the "bad" hills, but then they are not so "bad" on the way out as there is a set of tracks already there.
Snow was varying from nothing, to about 8-10" of the remains of winter, some places with 4-6" of water under the snow. Temp was about 10C, so the snow was soft enough to "mush", not dense enough to ride on top of, but not soft enough to break all the way through. So in some areas it was a nice smooth ride, but others it was chugging along at idle riding up, breaking through, riding up breaking through.... Kind of felt like driving something with lumpy tracks, or idling over logs, but we made it in and out with no drama! Used a mix of both high range with CDL and low range. One hill on the way in took a few attempts, and was most definitely better in high range locked (momentum!)
The general rule with snow on the road is that there are two hills that are a no go with more than a trace of snow - they can be pretty bad in the fall with wet leaves, so we park at the top of the first one (downhill on the way in) and walk the second half of the road. Took a toboggan to get down the two big hills. My son did a good endo half way down (very soft dense mushy snow!)
I've driven in quite a bit of snow in the 80, it's my DD all winter - but this was my first non-paved road snow driving - I didn't push it because I don't have a winch on the 80 - but I did have my hi-lift, a few slings, shackles, chain, shovel and my high-lift. Thankfully I didn't need any of them - happy with the performance of the 80, it just kept chugging along!
No pics during the drive - I was mainly focused on getting in and getting out <awaiting your dirty jokes here> but here is the parking spot (somewhat sunny so not much snow) at the top of the first hill, and second pic is the toboggan endo about 3/4 of the way down the first hill...
