What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (100 Viewers)

I've been needing to take my dual sport motorcycle out for some carb tuning and extended testing. It's not presently registered for the street so I decided it was time to renew my membership at Barnwell Mountain, and why not have fun on both vehicles.

I planned on sleeping in the Cruiser and promptly realized that camping near the sxs's and motorhomes was not an option. The nice thing about Barnwell is that they don't care where you camp as long as you aren't blocking a trail. I set out on the motorcycle to scout sites and found a good secluded one at the far end of the access road. Still had vault toilets within walking distance (good since I don't have an "Overland Toilet" yet) and someone had built a fire ring already, with plenty of available firewood in the woods nearby. Got myself set up and secluded.

Then I ran out on the motorcycle again and scouted some easy trails for me to take the Crusier on. I was being cautious since I'm by myself, don't have armor, and lack off road experience on anything with more than two wheels that isn't owned by the government. I caught up to a Toyota group and was following them till I realized we'd departed from the trail I'd planned on doing. Next thing I know they are out spotting through an obstacle that is way above my skill level. No room to turn around, I vowed to pay CLOSE attention to how they were doing it and pray that their guy would spot for me. He did and I'm grateful because I might have peed myself a little doing that for the first time but they let me hang with them till I was able to find my way back to easier trails and get back out to my camp site. Good times for sure.

I took some poser pics on the way out. Probably could have gone higher but again, it felt higher in the cab, and taking your own pictures, it starts getting hard to get back into the drivers seat.

Nice Moto jack rack or similar? Those are great for mild off road use and jacking the bike up after lifted.
Suggestion, I would use tie down straps front and rear extended to the loops under the bumper as far out as you can get them with mild tension. That sucker gets swaying back and forth so I have added a little insurance by doing this. You can really get the 80 rocking then and not sweat dumping the bike. Those lifts are great, I use the s*** out of mine for about 15 years or more now.

Ultimate MX hauler. It locks down through the footpegs. It rocks a bit over the rough stuff but not too wildly, I kept the pace down and it was fine. Rock solid on the paved stuff.

Proud dad moment, even if 27 years old, still my baby (washed with car wash soap because it was filthy and old and I don’t feel like spending $5673848 for another damn part after painting the girl)

1997 40th project continues:

Heading to the body shop Monday for a few little OCD things I just don't have time to do myself. I did order a new grill and decided to try and match my OEM black chrome logo. The Duplicolor Shadow kit was cheap and seemed to get the job done. I only used two layers of trans black then two layers of clear. I am very pleased with the turnout.

I am doing the paint on bumper, valence, new parking lamp lenses, grill and logo so the entire front end will look new.

Wow! I'll have to confider the Duplicolor now. I'm in the middle of a depo-conversion so have to use the LC grill on my LX  I just finished cleaning everything this weekend but deciding on keeping the chrome and painting the black or just painting the whole thing.

I have VHT Graphite ready (thanks Luke111 for the rec) but the Duplicolor looks great.

I did a little Dremel work this weekend.. just need to figure out the color to paint!

Glad to see I’m not the only one who had that idea. Here’s mine getting a bubble bath prior to paint.

Did you sand down before paint? Also, any preference with brand of paint / wheels /plastic / high heat, etc?

I sanded the crap out of it, degreased it and hit it with some primer and rustolium pro grade rattle can bedliner. Not for everyone but I like it, time will tell how it holds up.

I also did all the chrome pieces around the headlights and marker lights the same way.

I just got a new replacement grill and the plastic Crome does look terrible vs. the 97 edition. Looked at the front end of the 80 tonight with a head lamp and the front end looks hammered, ugh.Yours looks much improved in the picture. Thinking ALL the fake Crome up front needs to go though. Only place on the 80 that has it so not sure I get why it’s there.
I only did my new emblem in black chrome. I plan to leave the bright chrome on the grill itself. I think a light coat (meaning only one light pass of black chrome spray) might look kind of neat on the whole grill. No idea if it would hold up. The trans black can also leaves splatters if you look close. No idea how to prevent that and I am a pretty good rattle can man.

Behold, the Aux-tray! You know, for my smokin' tunes. ;)
'94 FZJ80 GXL, RHD Aussie import. PO installed a decent Clarion head unit, but it's geared more toward NAV than music, so no front aux port. But it does have an aux connector in the back. I don't use use the ash tray (duh), and it also seemed like the path of least resistance. And of course the irresistible pun. $7 aux port extension from Amzn, and an hour or swearing at my dash and voila!

Perfect upgrade, this sounds really, really good and I haven’t done the rear doors yet.

Installed the same ones and they rock, especially with the Alpine Amp and Deck. Need to add a base speaker!

I have a sub mounted in the stock location, there’s a thread about that fitment from like 10 years ago. It goes really well together, everything is tight.
