Trying to figure out how to carry my spare without buying an expensive rear bumper.

Do you guys tighten the filters too much, to the point of being unable to get them out by hand?
Only when someone else installs it.

:bang:

I don't understand why people over tighten oil filters. My filter wrenches are only used when I have to work on a vehicle, that previously had a gorilla under the hood, hanging from it's oil filter (usually a FRAM).

*practice with me, gorilla... finger tight plus a quarter turn. Thanks!

Yup, this is why I change my own oil on my cars. Especially when it takes a lot more of my time to drive somewhere else then to have them F it up and use mystery cheap oil.

This is what I was wondering... I've literally never had to use a filter wrench of any kind on my 80.

I put the oil filter on as per spec. Always by hand, snug and then 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Despite doing it correctly, there is always an initial resistance to removal. Seal is always lubed with new oil as well.

And up to now, I've never found a wrench that actually fits on without wrecking something else in the process.

Of course part of the problem is my hands are small and not very strong due to too much damage from hard living. A filter wrench is cheaper than hiring an Orangutan to come hand turn it off. Plus there really isn't an easy way to get purchase on the filter, where it is located.

Cursed at the puddle of oil on my garage floor and wished I had more time/energy to go and rebuild the trans/reseal the motor/everything else.

For those of you looking for a better oil filter wrench, this is what I've been using. As it tightens, it dents into the filter with the bar for grip, there's nothing I've come across yet that this thing couldn't break free.

I use this every time.

I always tighten my filters by hand, but for some reason when it comes time to remove them there is no way to get them off the same way.

If you spelled orangutan right, good on you!

Snorkel install...and easily noticeable bump in hp (haha). Definitely looks the part though...

Let my son drive the 80 all day playing in the snow with the local TLCA chapter.

Installed my antenna mast replacement, Old Head unit out and new JVC single din installed (x-mas gift), and Finally removed the 3rd row seat belts.

Tomorrow oil change and prep for a 4 hr ride to AL on Tue.

Finally got the chance to do some wheeling and hit up an amazing trail on a friend's property. Super steep, narrow and windy with rocks and trees on the sides of the trail. The Beast pulled along like a champ. Amazing how competent it felt and I'm completely hooked! Wish I'd had a GoPro on this trail, but grabbed a few iPhone pics toward the bottom - the upper parts of the trail were too steep to get out for a photo.
