What did you do with your 60 this weekend? (18 Viewers)

What size tires are you running and are those FJ cruiser rims? Very nice stance.
Those are the fjcruiser (07-2014) steel rims which I got from purefjcruiser.com. 17x7.5 They do require a 1.25" spacer. I used spydertrax (get the fj40 ones they are the same as the fj60/62). I am running 255/80/17 tires basically 33 x 10/17.

Readjusted the depth of my brake light switch to hopefully fix the issue I was having. The brake lights were staying on after I shut the car off and I'd have to wiggle the pedal just right to turn them off.

I was easily able to remove the brake pedal return spring by hand. Going to try to get another from a local dealership.

Installed a redhead rebuilt 80 steering box on the 60. Tight steering again!

I got side swiped today, thankfully they just hit the mirror and not the body. I’m a good two feet away from the line….. I don’t know how you swerve that much. Does anyone have a chrome passenger side mirrors I could buy? The new oem ones are pretty expensive. I have an 83 but it looks like someone put these chrome 62 mirrors on at some point and I like them
i have a couple.

How many Benjamins did it cost you? What's the big advantage to the 80 gear box? I might end up doing this since my gear box is leaking.
$430 to have them rebuild the 80 box I sent them. If you have a late model 1985+ with offset mounting holes for frame it’s a 100% bolt on deal (minor trim of fender to fit is necessary..I went a little overboard on my trim). The steering is tight now and it’s an upgrade over stock in size. The only upgrade I did not do was the larger 105 sector shaft that they will install as part of rebuild for you if you supply it and you needs a new pitman arm if doing the 105 shaft. Call them and they can do the 105 shaft and even port the box for hydro assist if you want! Very happy with the quality of work and fast turnaround time they had..

Is this a rebuild or a reseal? Are they putting new wear parts in it?

What's involved in the bolt up for pre-1985?

When I installed an 80 series the biggest advantage was that it wasn't leaking like my high mileage 60 series box. I did not notice any improved steering input/effort/blah blah. My 60 box was bleeding badly, I did a quick search on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market - https://www.car-part.com/, found a box for about $200, called the yard to confirm condition, and had it in may hands a few days later.

Finally got the Howell TBI all hooked up on the 60, after alittle priming fired up and was running pretty well, noticed I had a leak on the manifold so ordered a remflex gasket to hopefully take care of that.

But for the first time in months it moved on its own power, looking forward to getting out and driving it around soon

I got a used '96 80 series box from MUD for $125 going strong on 5 years...

What's involved in the bolt up for pre-1985?
From what I've seen, pre-1985 cannot use the FJ62 and 80 boxes for two reasons. The bolt pattern is slightly different and those bolt holes are sleeved through the frame. Even if you welded the original holes up and drilled new ones through the frame you'd have to re-sleeve those new holes. If you don't re-sleeve them you could potentially hurt your frame or the steering box itself.

Re drill frame holes on 2 of them as it’s a semetric square bolt pattern on early 1985 and down 60 frames and offset mounting holes on later 1985 and up .. pic is of my later frame bolt pattern.

They told me they machine out a bushing to add needle bearings and then clean check tolerance and reassemble to factory spec.. I was going to just put the box I had on but figured while it’s out rebuild and not have to touch it again hopefully…

I had a terrible experience with red head steering gear rebuilding my 62 box. Seriously bad work. Box was tight but leaked. Customer service was terrible. The seal they installed twice was super crooked . I know others on this forum have had similar experiences. Yes I’m still bitter about dropping a lot of money for half-a$$ed work.

When I went to the 80 box, my friend @Kleatus rebuilt it for me, it’s been fantastic and leak free. Good thing about the 80 boxes is that rebuild parts are still available from Toyota should you need, or you can upgrade to the 105 sector shaft.

I remember that. Glad you got it sorted.
