I had a chisel that fit perfectly into that groove. Put a clean tip on it and scraped that stuff off. HTH
Thanks, I used a long bladed flathead screwdriver. Just worked it around carefully. I still have to clean up the remaining residue and such, BUT the rear main seal is finally in and I retorqued the rear main cap. The pan will be back on tomorrow. Then I can follow that up with flywheel, clutch, trans/transfer and it will be drivable again...you know, minus the seats and doors and hood and rear cargo area.
