And if there ever was serendipity in what I did in buying this truck, I ate Chinese. I usually don't take the fortune cookies. I did today.

Spent a little time at the shop tonight starting the rear cargo system. Here is the rough box with the narrow side pull out:

The system I built for my 100 uses the super nice (and super heavy and expensive!) Accuride slides. This is a sort of proof of concept to see if a non-slide friction fit drawer will work.

Two reasons to do this: one to keep the weight down on the driver side which will have the fridge and two all access from both sides as seen here:

I built a very makeshift sleeping platform for my initial journey with the truck, spent 25 or so nights in the back and was happy with the height and size of it:

With the pass seat moved fully forward you have 72" of room. I'm 6'2" so would love just another inch or two but had no problems sleeping soundly most nights.

The front of the box has an extra wing on a piano hinge that flips forward for sleeping. Here it is in sleeping mode, and also showing that you can still access the glovebox when it's flipped:

I am still debating what to do with the big side, but I think I will use the heavy duty slides and make a top for the drawer box when pulled out to serve as a cooking surface and countertop. The total unit is 40"W x 50"L so it is quite a long usesable top!

May I ask why you put the narrow drawer on the wide door side? It seems counter-intuitive.

Of course you can ask! Before I answer let me ask you why the wider side would have to go on the right side? The only reason I could come up with is if you wanted into the right side drawer with only the right rear door open. Since that can't happen without first opening the left door I felt free to choose whichever side I wished.

My reasoning then was that I plan to put the heavy fridge on the right side. My current plan is to use the left side wide drawer with the heavy duty slides to hold the stove tools recovery gear and other heavy items. This helps to balance out the weight a bit. Also my propane tank is on the left door swingout so want the stove over there.

All that said I didn't glue anything together yet! So it can still be reversed and Id welcome any discussion onto the merits of either. Half of the fun of doing stuff to the truck is envisioning how it'll be used and attempting to create ideal solutions for my particular style and type of use.
 
My thought would be to be able to get into the narrow drawer with only the small, left hand rear door open ... Then again, according to many here, the steering wheel on my BJ73 is on the wrong side of the truck ;)
 
Sam, thats a good thought but to do that the narrow drawer would have to only be 12"W. That makes for a pretty unusable drawer.

FWIW, I am also planning to design the wide drawer to have an open space at the front where I can store my most commonly accessed items like paper towels, wet ones, main tool roll, etc.

The drawer will be full depth with the rear 36" having a tabletop. Either a top that just drops in or is hinged like I drew it:

In other non-controversial news, I installed a new LED light in the main housing.

Now I'll be able to find which side the steering wheel is on!
