Finished installing the new custom grill, a few little things and... after 3 long years it hit the road with it's own FT power very gracefully.
I use unleaded 95 octane fuel
Works well.
It is probably around 20 years old, and I only had to replace the pump piston once, a few years ago.
Started doing the rear drum brakes today as the e brake became seized... lots of damaged stuff and neglect
rusted bell cranks, broken bell crank brackets with seized bolts
deteriorated rubber bell crank boots
sticky wheel cylinders, seized bake adjustment star wheels
broken shoe retain pins
missing rubber star wheel covers
bent lower brake shoe retaining brackets

Leaf springs on…..slow progress with any rebuild, as work is getting in the way , but a few pics of horrors with a broken leaf and well corroded pin.

Rear differential is in surprisingly good order, with no nasties. Primed and ready for paint.

FUEL TANK

So whilst thinking the next task through, I decided to inspect the diesel main fuel tank.
I knew it wasn’t perfect….300,000 Kms + in the Australian outback, 35 years old the tank has clearly taken its toll.
After a thorough wash out and partial fill of water I set too.
Found a big scab of what’s known as a “ bush repair”, and tbh it’s held up very well. Still, it had to come off. A dig out of the scab revealed a tidy gash, about 30mm long.
After a good clean and deagreased I soldered a bit of copper and around the area to seal it good and proper. No marks for beauty , but she’s firm and sealed, and surely got to be ok with a vehicle examination in due course.
Next were the two large circular holes for sender and pipes.
These had 5 x m4 tapped holes , most of which had snapped off studs within.
Stud extraction is not gonna work. So a metal hole punch in some thin steel plate , weld onto the studs and surprisingly they all came out, some needed a few attempts, but a good result already round.
The tank in due course will have a full re vamp and new coats of paint

Little more time on the 77 PS and cooling project over the weekend.
New pump in and lines runs sans the return line for next weekends bleed. Used the new fangled washer style. Cute!
Radiator, HDT shroud/fan in and secure AF. Foamed everywhere so hoping very little ram air loss. Routed, wrapped/secured wire for temp sensor. Installed in the top tank now.
Little keeper bracket added to both sides.
My AC lines are all re-routed whack due to the IC and dryer relocation. Wrapped them with OEM looking protection wrap. Feel a little better. Think I'll add heat wrap to the long one that runs over the valve cover to the firewall.

Did this a few weeks ago. Took pics yesterday tho. Added the folding antenna mount but wanted it to lay against the front bumper when not needed. Came up with this.
Drove it across the state to visit family this weekend, trailered it home. Nothing broken, just needed a second vehicle for the next few weeks while I redo the engine bay electrical system and replace the exhaust manifold gasket. Ironically the Cummins can pull the Prado up hills faster than the Prado can climb them by itself!

Rig is looking super tidy dude.
Drove it to the local hill for one last day of riding, at least lift assisted boarding. Our local hill closed for the season yesterday. Gratuitous poser shot.

Getting bodywork done on the HZJ-73. Quarters needed a bit more flatness after earlier sheet metal repairs. One side done and ready to seal, the other is close to primer/block sanding and final seal. Hoping to base/clear first of next month
