You're in a good 1HZ groove right now. Praise away! ;)

Mine came with the rig so not totally sure of it's origin. Looks pretty identical to the Ebay ones I see posted there tho. It's held up for the 6+ years I've had it and seems repairable.

I'm thinking about pulling mine and handing it off to these guys to R&R while the 77 is off the (salted) roads for the winter

They did a 40 radiator for me a lifetime ago that is still solid

Cruiser parts had the whole enchilada for $250. So I bought it. On to the next project which is slider windows. Stay tuned….

That place looks legit and solid plan!

Local place to me (Mac's) isn't as heavy duty but have been in biz rocking it since the 50's. They build custom radiators for mostly the hot rod scene and I've used them for 20+ years. Never a problem. Looking at alternative options if this one isn't worth repairing. Already moved to a separate auto trans cooler. So don't have that stress.

I was afraid of the cost. What did you pay? Did you re0lace everything in the photo I posted?

one thing is for sure, it's never going to be any cheaper than it is right now. sadly.

Did the first fuel filter change since we've owned it and there's a decent amount of what I assume is water. This is after driving for about 11k km from purchase, not sure when it was last done. Filled the new filter with Liqui-Moly diesel purge to test it out and it is slightly smoother at idle. Not sure if that's all because of the new filter or the purging.

Nice to know if you don't have a vice you can flip the filter upside down on the mount and use this to wrestle loose the water sensor. Once the seal is broken the diesel will start to dribble out of the lines, so be quick lol.

Made the mistake of leaving one of the lines loose on the filter and it wouldn't start the next morning. Had to prime the filter with the hose removed to get it running again. Lessons learned.

Although it’s highly unlikely that we’ll ever see either the V8 or the 2.8 diesel, it’s fun to watch the YouTube guys discuss them. 😊

Yep. Popcorn please.
Also check out Ronny Dahl, who actually tells quite the opposite of ASPW (but supported by much more practical facts).
Dang, would love to experience that rig in person..
Cheers Ralf

I think St. Pierre consumed a lot of caffeine prior to making that video. He was quite animated. 😁
Premise #1 …. I’m not a mechanic, I don’t have a single part number memorized and even if I did, I wouldn’t know how to install said part. 😊
However I’m under the impression that there is a lot of “get-up-and-go” laying dormant in the V8 whereas most of the “juice” has already been squeezed out of those 4 cylinders. 😊

I bought a bunch of oil filters. Fuel filters are coming one day soon.
Also installed used mirrors from Japan.
When I was looking at photos of them before buying, I could not see the Murakami name but they looked right.
They have a cover placed over the decayed chrome.
I sheared off 2 of the little screws that hold the 2 parts together but I had a machine shop drill that mess out and install M4 helicoils.
I know some folks hate the vibrating as you go down the road but I love the snap-back-into-position feature after folding them in for off road.
It is also cool that 35 year old electric motors work.

A: Give the puppy a ride!

B: Can you just buy the plastic mirror covers? Have two sets of electric mirrors I'm not going to use. One set was painted black by a PO and the other is a little sun faded. Some covers would snazz them up for someone that wants them.

New old man emu front shackles, springs, and shocks on, courtesy of cruiser outfitters. Ready to put the arb bumper on after I touch up some frame paint. Then gonna do the rear suspension. I'll be selling all these bits I pulled off too. Anyone know how to get the hub lock and 4wd lights to stop blinking? Everything functional including 4wd since the manual hub conversion. The truck computer just doesn't think it's engaged.

Rear door fold down tables are awesome. Combined with some small storage inside the rear doors is even better. I love mine. whether it's a serving tray or cooking pad for a meal, or a place to cut up fish bait and rig up. As awesome as it is the auto makers would be fools not to put this on a new SUV at some point in the near future.
I’d love a rear fold down table in my BJ73. Brand new to the MUD community

Hello,

There are a couple of things most of these guys miss in their videos.

There is a limit on the power you can squeeze out of a small displacement engine. If you go beyond that, either heat or emissions (sometimes both) become a problem. The designers mentioned that they had to mount the radiator in a slanted position to handle the heat, and that they opted for an automatic transmission to use power efficiently. Apparently, they got it right.

On the other hand, the V8 has a lot of low rpm power. The four-cylinder engine needs acceleration and a turbo to deliver the same amount of power. Furthermore, an inline six or a V8 deliver power in a smooth, sustained way, unlike an inline four. There are times when you need that low rpm, smoothly delivered power to keep going, and you cannot go pedal to the metal to achieve the same power at higher rpm.

Last but not least, I do hope Toyota got the DPF right with the 2.8-Liter engine. Hiluxes, Fortuners and Prados had problems with faulty DPFs that either did not activate or remained on after activation; there was even a court-ordered settlement because of this defect. I do hope they got the heat management right as well.

This is just my opinion. No flames or offense intended,

Agreed. My 1.9L TDI engine puts out more hp and torque than a stock 1HZ and gets better fuel economy, but doesn't have the same "duty cycle". Seeing @Kroll 's posts about towing a BJ42 across BC with his 79 is a great illustration of this point: my Prado could easily keep up with his 79 when neither were loaded, but put that much weight behind the little 1.9 and it would overheat long before it ran out of power. The 1HZ on the other hand can chug along with heavy loads all day.

Please post more pics.
If you have a pto winch, please show some pics of the vinyl cover that protects it.
I am thinking of making one myself.

How much was the conversion kit?
