After completing some general maintenance on the 40 and 70, it was a nice day so I parked them on the driveway to enjoy seeing them in the sun. Then I needed to move the 80 to get the tractor out of the shop for yard work, they all caught a little sun today.

Installed an Enginaire snorkel pre-cleaner the other nigh (terrible pics, i leave for work when its dark and return when its dark lol). These are popular on Tacoma World and have some good reviews. The rubber adapter I used looks less than attractive, still researching a cleaner option to adapt the 4inch ID mushroom to the 3" OD snorkel

Has a little spinny fan inside to throw the dust out of a small port in the rear. Central Oregon is dusty AF!

It was bring your 'Cruiser to work day. (Well, my "other" cruiser.) View attachment 2859468

Drifting the big wagon around snowy turns was a good laugh, although compared to my previous swb's, it was a lot less dramatic as it came around.
my first winter in Fairbanks, AK with my BJ70 what an eye opener. I had bjg AT's on it and thought they would be great for the winter since I used these on the Tacoma's I had and they performed good all winter. boy was I in for a surprise. at about 35mph I did two 360's. after work I took it real easy home and got some studded winter tires and what a difference these made.

90 inch wheelbases make for much more dramatic spins, don't they! o_O

I've been driving winter roads (like the one pictured above) for 21 years on my commute, so my daily driver (Prado 90), and my wife's daily driver (100series) both get their snowtires put on every October. A/T's are fine until you drive on actual snow tires, and then you realize they're not fine LOL. I do think BFG has done really well with the newest snowflake KO, but its not a real *snow tire* as you so accurately illustrated. 😂 I took backroads today and went very cautiously indeed. Well, mostly. ;)

Days like today are faster on snowy gravel.

Absolutely! My 280GE had a 94.5" wheelbase and 37" Swampers; it could get pretty exciting on winter roads! Luckily I never pulled any accidental spins, but there were a couple of times where it was useful (and fun) to do a u-turn on tight 2-lane roads. A quick jab of throttle and a flick of the steering wheel was all it took, the rear would come right around! Locking the rear diff made it even better...

I've been pleasantly surprised how well the LJ78 handles winter roads. Even with A/T tires I haven't had any problems except on pure ice; a couple of weeks ago I was at a dead stop on an iced over gravel road and suddenly the whole vehicle just slid sideways off the crown of the road. Tire chains were promptly pressed into service!

Guys, you scare me off. My BJ73 has 32inch BFG AT KO2 with a 2inch OME lift on it.
I haven't driven her on snow yet.... And I wonder I ever should.
Unfortunately we don't have real snow here in my area. It's either slushy or icy.

Honestly, the new BFG A/T is passable. In its first winter, I'd say its quite predictable. If you do average mileage, then my opinion is that the second year of wear, they start to get less effective in snow, as you get down through the tread.

I've run them on 96" wheelbase, 100", and even a 110" pickup (4 door mitsubishi L200) in lieu of winters, and most of the time they were fine, but icy days were dicey, and slush could be a very long drive. If you're only seeing occasional snow, I think they are more than adequate. @coldtaco and I are definitely not in that category, nor is @AirheadNut so we can make a case for dedicated snows.

Take her out and give it a try. Chances are you'll just have an absolute riot! Besides... compared to a 70, the BJ73 is practically a limo! And my 77? It occupies two time zones!

Thanks. I will look for a road with no ditch and no guardrails and give it a try. Need to ask Santa for some snow, though.
Wipers are more important than winter tires here right now.

My truck came equipped with a block heater and battery warmers. Both of which were useless in Southern Georgia.
😁
