Once again I have fallen off the forums!! For the past 4 months I have been enjoying the FJ62 and heres a few things that have happened.
I finally applied the Fluid Film to the undercarriage

It took a while but it was worth it. Then i parked it anytime salt was on the roads.

Lately I have been daily driving it and fighting an alternator issue. The PO Claims a new alternator was installed, and as I said before everything around it was a mess, loose bolts, loose belt, broken temp sender. Recently I pulled the wires and cleaned them and checked over everything, that didn't help....I was seeing wierd things like the volt meter sweeping low to high constantly, no matter the load on the system.

Finally I used contact cleaner and cleaned out a metric 5H1T ton of dielectric grease from the connector... I think the grease prevented the connector from being locked into place and it was vibrating and arcing or breaking connection. After cleaning and hearing the positive "Click" the connector was secured and voltage irregularities were fixed!

Then things were good!

Things were good until I tried to do a first fishing trip of the year....

IMG_1549.JPG

I took Charlie with me, knowing all he does is scare fish away and chase flies as I try to cast them across the river....

We headed west for the mountains and trying to make good time when our efforts were thwarted by an immediate bathroom break!
IMG_1545.JPG

With all of that out of the way were were back underway and destine for the rivers and lakes that we were used to.

IMG_1548.JPG

Finally we got our feet wet and cast a line, but it was becoming more and more apparent that the water was up and nothing could be bothered by our flies or effort to get them there.

IMG_1556.JPG

on to the next spot, maybe the water wasn't so high, maybe the creeks wouldn't be flooded up stream...
IMG_1569.JPG

Hoping to find fish we quickly suited up and got in the water, but still nothing was biting, nothing was on the water...i was just out there by myself and Charlie was staring at me like I was an idiot for having planned this trip. After spending some time trying to convince myself that I was having fun, I finally came to realization that it just wasn't' my day so I finally packed up and headed home. Thats when things took a turn for the worst, I was already upset to have driven 2.5hrs and didn't even see a single fish, but now my day was really starting to fall apart...

Here I was happy and enjoying the day and none the wiser of what lay ahead...
IMG_1575 2.JPG

It wasn't long after this picture that I packed up and headed back home, no fish, no bites, nothing, just a day spent with Charlie (who was more than happy to spend a rainy day in the woods and water)
IMG_1585.jpg

After hitting the road we made decent time working our way back east for dinner.

IMG_1590.JPG

Then BOOM!!! One hour into the drive home, I head a big sound, something wasn't right, I took a second to thing of what it could be (I couldn't) then slowly drifted to the side of the road to stop and take a look... What was it, it sounded like a jack hammer coming from the transmission/clutch area, but i had never heard something like this before... I pulled the lower bellhousing cover to investigate and found the throwout bearing and arm to be pretty normal, the clutch and pressure plate looked good. I didn't know what was going on, just that it was making a racquet and it couldn't be good. I drove another few miles and quickly realized the clutch wasn't working right. Checked the clutch master, looked at the slave, looked around the area and thought it all looked good. Finally for a reason I couldn't remember I grabbed the biggest tool in my bag (I didn't have a prybar so an 18mm wrench would suffice). I put it in between the bellhousing and the flywheel and gave it some pressure... Woah!!! the flywheel moved freely.....s***!! I am 100 miles from home and my flywheel isn't bolted on what the hell am I going to do now!

I tried to drive a little further, knowing it was a bad idea, finally I pulled over and called a tow truck (and my wife for a ride)..... I didn't really get any pictures due to the stress and worry over what went wrong.

Heres how I left the cruiser for a tow truck to come pick it up.

After everything settled and I was home, the cruiser was dropped off, and I started to investigate..... Turns out the flywheel bolts didn't back out, it was much worse.....

I got it in the shop and up on the lift. After draining the oil then removing the oil pan to confirm one of my fears it was quickly apparent.

Good thing I already bought the raft
Love the posts! I have always wanted to do an epic fishing road trip out of the cruiser. The one that comes to mind is the Western Native Challenge. catching all of the native trout species in the west. It would make for a pretty fantastic trip.

Thanks, hoping to keep up the posts!!! @bcolvin that looks awesome!! That sounds like a lot of fun, i'm gonna keep that in mind. I actually just got back from a few days in Steamboat, have a buddy there with an 80 that keeps telling me to drive out there. I just picked up a flybox while I was there:

Steamboat Flyfishers old shop was awesome! I didn't like the new shop last time we were down there in 2016 I think.

That Freestone box looks familiar!

Haha, yup, that freestone box is getting too full!! I'm gonna throw their sticker on the Fj62!! Yea it was a cool shop and the guys were busy booking trips, but it was modern and clean, I'm a sucker for an old cluttered shop with squeaky floor boards and the whole lot...

The dudes at fly fisher are great. I’ve guided for them off and on. They do crazy business. It would be great to get a cruiser fishing trip together. Hit me up if you come up this way again.

Oh nice, yes they were booking trips left and right when I walked in, chatted for a bit. They seemed like good dudes.

Definitely, that would be great! Steamboat is just as fun I. The summer as it is in the winter!

And so it begins.... I got back from a work trip and had time to pull the 3F-E today.... everything looks solid and rust free, so that is good. You can tell everything was just apart not too long ago, so that corroborates the story that the engine had been recently rehuilt.

Trying to keep everything labeled, organized and stored where it won't get damaged. I'm hoping to clean the engine bay good and get all of this Virginia red clay off of everything....

IMG_1857.JPG

You can see how much mud was in the radiator and all the leaves on the floor were inbetween the condenser and the radiator.

IMG_1858.JPG

Taking the ARB bumper off wasn't as bad as I'd thought it would be, after that it was just slow and steady, remove it, label it, and store it....

And bam!! Just like that its out. Don't worry I pulled the oil pan first, so I won't set the engine on the oil pan and crack it. (must have happened during rebuild tho, because it has new stickers on it and is in great shape.

I pulled the intake to make sure to get all the injector, intake wiring harness disconnected without having any issues. Everything went pretty smooth. A solid start to getting this thing back on the road, and it only took me about 4-5 hours of work. Its nice having all the tools in the shop, all setup in the right spot. One day at a time.....

What's the plan moving forward? Tear down and assess the current engine? Or dive into a full swap?

6BT Cummins time!
I’ve thought about lot of options to include the 12HT & 1HZ, but at the end of the day, the LS series is so abundant & there are plenty of aftermarket manufactures that support it…. With the H55F already in place, it makes sense to go with a 5.3L LS and a Marks 4WD conversion kit.

Smash that easy button!
I tried to pay a little more for this one and shop around to find one where I didn’t have to do anything to it….. but I guess that didn’t work…

Welcome to the dark side, it’s much faster 😉
